Prophecy a Superior Gift
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.1 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially the gift of speaking what God has revealed.1 Follow after love, and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.1 Follow after love, and be emulous of spiritual manifestations, but rather that ye may prophesy.
For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.2 When a person speaks in another language, he doesn't speak to people but to God. No one understands him. His spirit is speaking mysteries.2 For he who speaks in another language speaks not to men, but to God; for no one understands; but in the Spirit he speaks mysteries.2 For he that speaks with a tongue does not speak to men but to God: for no one hears; but in spirit he speaks mysteries.
But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.3 But when a person speaks what God has revealed, he speaks to people to help them grow, to encourage them, and to comfort them.3 But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, exhortation, and consolation.3 But he that prophesies speaks to men in edification, and encouragement, and consolation.
One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.4 When a person speaks in another language, he helps himself grow. But when a person speaks what God has revealed, he helps the church grow.4 He who speaks in another language edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the assembly.4 He that speaks with a tongue edifies himself; but he that prophesies edifies the assembly.
Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.5 I wish that all of you could speak in other languages, but especially that you could speak what God has revealed. The person who speaks what God has revealed is more important than the person who speaks in other languages. This is true unless he can interpret what he says to help the church grow.5 Now I desire to have you all speak with other languages, but rather that you would prophesy. For he is greater who prophesies than he who speaks with other languages, unless he interprets, that the assembly may be built up.5 Now I desire that ye should all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy. But greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, unless he interpret, that the assembly may receive edification.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation or of knowledge or of prophecy or of teaching?6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?6 Brothers and sisters, it wouldn't do you any good if I came to you speaking in other languages, unless I explained revelation, knowledge, prophecy, or doctrine to you.6 But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking with other languages, what would I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?6 And now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I shall speak to you either in revelation, or in knowledge, or in prophecy, or in teaching?
Yet even lifeless things, either flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp?7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?7 Musical instruments like the flute or harp produce sounds. If there is no difference in the notes, how can a person tell what tune is being played?7 Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they didn't give a distinction in the sounds, how would it be known what is piped or harped?7 Even lifeless things giving a sound, whether pipe or harp, if they give not distinction to the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
For if the bugle produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle?8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?8 For example, if the trumpet doesn't sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?8 For if the trumpet gave an uncertain sound, who would prepare himself for war?8 For also, if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself for war?
So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air.9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.9 In the same way, if you don't speak in a way that can be understood, how will anyone know what you're saying? You will be talking into thin air.9 So also you, unless you uttered by the tongue words easy to understand, how would it be known what is spoken? For you would be speaking into the air.9 Thus also ye with the tongue, unless ye give a distinct speech, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will be speaking to the air.
There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of languages in the world, and no kind is without meaning.10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.10 No matter how many different languages there are in the world, not one of them is without meaning.10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of sounds in the world, and none of them is without meaning.10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of undistinguishable sound.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
If then I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be to the one who speaks a barbarian, and the one who speaks will be a barbarian to me.11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.11 If I don't know what a language means, I will be a foreigner to the person who speaks it and that person will be a foreigner to me.11 If then I don't know the meaning of the sound, I would be to him who speaks a foreigner, and he who speaks would be a foreigner to me.11 If therefore I do not know the power of the sound, I shall be to him that speaks a barbarian, and he that speaks a barbarian for me.
So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church.12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.12 In the same way, since you're eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in them so that you help the church grow.12 So also you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, seek that you may abound to the building up of the assembly.12 Thus ye also, since ye are desirous of spirits, seek that ye may abound for the edification of the assembly.
Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.13 So the person who speaks in another language should pray for an interpretation of what he says.13 Therefore let him who speaks in another language pray that he may interpret.13 Wherefore let him that speaks with a tongue pray that he may interpret.
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.14 If I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my mind is not productive.14 For if I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.14 For if I pray with a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.15 So what does this mean? It means that I will pray with my spirit, and I will pray with my mind. I will sing psalms with my spirit, and I will sing psalms with my mind.15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, but I will pray also with the understanding; I will sing with the spirit, but I will sing also with the understanding.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
Otherwise if you bless in the spirit only, how will the one who fills the place of the ungifted say the "Amen " at your giving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying?16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?16 Otherwise, if you praise God only with your spirit, how can outsiders say "Amen!" to your prayer of thanksgiving? They don't know what you're saying.16 Otherwise if you bless with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the "Amen" at your giving of thanks, seeing he doesn't know what you say?16 Since otherwise, if thou blessest with the spirit, how shall he who fills the place of the simple Christian say Amen, at thy giving of thanks, since he does not know what thou sayest?
For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not edified.17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.17 Your prayer of thanksgiving may be very good, but it doesn't help other people grow.17 For you most certainly give thanks well, but the other person is not built up.17 For thou indeed givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all;18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:18 I thank God that I speak in other languages more than any of you.18 I thank my God, I speak with other languages more than you all.18 I thank God I speak in a tongue more than all of you:
however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.19 Yet, in order to teach others in church, I would rather say five words that can be understood than ten thousand words in another language.19 However in the assembly I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in another language.19 but in the assembly I desire to speak five words with my understanding, that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.
Instruction for the Church
Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature.20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.20 Brothers and sisters, don't think like children. When it comes to evil, be like babies, but think like mature people.20 Brothers, don't be children in thoughts, yet in malice be babies, but in thoughts be mature.20 Brethren, be not children in your minds, but in malice be babes; but in your minds be grown men.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
In the Law it is written, "BY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY THE LIPS OF STRANGERS I WILL SPEAK TO THIS PEOPLE, AND EVEN SO THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME," says the Lord.21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.21 God's word says, "Through people who speak foreign languages and through the mouths of foreigners I will speak to these people, but even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord."21 In the law it is written, "By men of strange languages and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people. Not even thus will they hear me, says the Lord."21 It is written in the law, By people of other tongues, and by strange lips, will I speak to this people; and neither thus will they hear me, saith the Lord.
So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe.22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.22 So the gift of speaking in other languages is a sign for unbelievers, not for believers. The gift of speaking what God had revealed is a sign for believers, not for unbelievers.22 Therefore other languages are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to the unbelieving; but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to those who believe.22 So that tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to unbelievers; but prophecy, not to unbelievers, but to those who believe.
Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad?23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?23 Suppose the whole congregation gathers in the same place and you speak in other languages. When outsiders or unbelievers come in, won't they say that you're out of your mind?23 If therefore the whole assembly is assembled together and all speak with other languages, and unlearned or unbelieving people come in, won't they say that you are crazy?23 If therefore the whole assembly come together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and simple persons enter in, or unbelievers, will not they say ye are mad?
 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an ungifted man enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all;24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:24 Now suppose you speak what God has revealed. When unbelievers or outsiders come in you will show them where they are wrong and convince them that they are sinners.24 But if all prophesy, and someone unbelieving or unlearned comes in, he is reproved by all, and he is judged by all.24 But if all prophesy, and some unbeliever or simple person come in, he is convicted of all, he is judged of all;
the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will fall on his face and worship God, declaring that God is certainly among you.25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.25 The secrets in their hearts will become known, and in this way they will quickly bow with their faces touching the ground, worship God, and confess that God is truly among you.25 And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed. So he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.25 the secrets of his heart are manifested; and thus, falling upon his face, he will do homage to God, reporting that God is indeed amongst you.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.26 So what does this mean, brothers and sisters? When you gather, each person has a psalm, doctrine, revelation, another language, or an interpretation. Everything must be done to help each other grow.26 What is it then, brothers? When you come together, each one of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has another language, has an interpretation. Let all things be done to build each other up.26 What is it then, brethren? whenever ye come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done to edification.
 If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret;27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.27 If people speak in other languages, only two or three at the most should speak. They should do it one at a time, and someone must interpret what each person says.27 If any man speaks in another language, let it be two, or at the most three, and in turn; and let one interpret.27 If any one speak with a tongue, let it be two, or at the most three, and separately, and let one interpret;
but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the church; and let him speak to himself and to God.28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.28 But if an interpreter isn't present, those people should remain silent in church. They should only speak to themselves and to God.28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in the assembly, and let him speak to himself, and to God.28 but if there be no interpreter, let him be silent in the assembly, and let him speak to himself and to God.
Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others pass judgment.29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.29 Two or three people should speak what God has revealed. Everyone else should decide whether what each person said is right or wrong.29 Let the prophets speak, two or three, and let the others discern.29 And let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge.
But if a revelation is made to another who is seated, the first one must keep silent.30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.30 If God reveals something to another person who is seated, the first speaker should be silent.30 But if a revelation is made to another sitting by, let the first keep silent.30 But if there be a revelation to another sitting there, let the first be silent.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted;31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.31 All of you can take your turns speaking what God has revealed. In that way, everyone will learn and be encouraged.31 For you all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted.31 For ye can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all be encouraged.
and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets;32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.32 People who speak what God has revealed must control themselves.32 The spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets,32 And spirits of prophets are subject to prophets.
for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.33 God is not a God of disorder but a God of peace. As in all the churches of God's holy people,33 for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace. As in all the assemblies of the saints,33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints.
The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says.34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.34 the women must keep silent. They don't have the right to speak. They must take their place as Moses' Teachings say.34 let your wives keep silent in the assemblies, for it has not been permitted for them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as the law also says.34 Let your women be silent in the assemblies, for it is not permitted to them to speak; but to be in subjection, as the law also says.
If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church.35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.35 If they want to know anything they should ask their husbands at home. It's shameful for a woman to speak in church.35 If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is shameful for a woman to chatter in the assembly.35 But if they wish to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is a shame for a woman to speak in assembly.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
Was it from you that the word of God first went forth? Or has it come to you only?36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?36 Did God's word originate with you? Are you the only ones it has reached?36 What? Was it from you that the word of God went out? Or did it come to you alone?36 Did the word of God go out from you, or did it come to you only?
If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord's commandment.37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.37 Whoever thinks that he speaks for God or that he is spiritually gifted must acknowledge that what I write to you is what the Lord commands.37 If any man thinks himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him recognize the things which I write to you, that they are the commandment of the Lord.37 If any one thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him recognise the things that I write to you, that it is the Lord's commandment.
But if anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized.38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.38 But whoever ignores what I write should be ignored.38 But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.38 But if any be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues.39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.39 So, brothers and sisters, desire to speak what God has revealed, and don't keep anyone from speaking in other languages.39 Therefore, brothers, desire earnestly to prophesy, and don't forbid speaking with other languages.39 So that, brethren, desire to prophesy, and do not forbid the speaking with tongues.
But all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner.40 Let all things be done decently and in order.40 Everything must be done in a proper and orderly way.40 Let all things be done decently and in order.40 But let all things be done comelily and with order.
