2 "That the leaders led in Israel, That the people volunteered, Bless the LORD!2 Praise ye the LORD for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves.2 Praise the LORD! Men in Israel vowed to fight, and people volunteered for service.2 "Because the leaders took the lead in Israel, because the people offered themselves willingly, be blessed, Yahweh!2 "That the leaders took the lead in Israel, that the people offered themselves willingly, bless the LORD!
3 "Hear, O kings; give ear, O rulers! I-- to the LORD, I will sing, I will sing praise to the LORD, the God of Israel.3 Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, even I, will sing unto the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel.3 Listen, you kings! Open your ears, you princes! I will sing a song to the LORD. I will make music to the LORD God of Israel.3 "Hear, you kings! Give ear, you princes! I, [even] I, will sing to Yahweh. I will sing praise to Yahweh, the God of Israel.3 "Hear, O kings; give ear, O princes; to the LORD I will sing, I will make melody to the LORD, the God of Israel.
4 "LORD, when You went out from Seir, When You marched from the field of Edom, The earth quaked, the heavens also dripped, Even the clouds dripped water.4 LORD, when thou wentest out of Seir, when thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens dropped, the clouds also dropped water.4 O LORD, when you went out from Seir, when you marched from the country of Edom, the earth quaked, the sky poured, the clouds burst,4 "Yahweh, when you went forth out of Seir, when you marched out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, the sky also dropped. Yes, the clouds dropped water.4 "LORD, when thou didst go forth from Se'ir, when thou didst march from the region of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens dropped, yea, the clouds dropped water.
5 "The mountains quaked at the presence of the LORD, This Sinai, at the presence of the LORD, the God of Israel.5 The mountains melted from before the LORD, even that Sinai from before the LORD God of Israel.5 and the mountains shook in the presence of the LORD God of Sinai, in the presence of the LORD God of Israel.5 The mountains quaked at the presence of Yahweh, even Sinai, at the presence of Yahweh, the God of Israel.5 The mountains quaked before the LORD, yon Sinai before the LORD, the God of Israel.

6 "In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, In the days of Jael, the highways were deserted, And travelers went by roundabout ways.6 In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, and the travellers walked through byways.6 In the days of Shamgar, son of Anath, in the days of Jael, roads were deserted. 7 "The peasantry ceased, they ceased in Israel, Until I, Deborah, arose, Until I arose, a mother in Israel.7 The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until that I Deborah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel.7 Villages in Israel were deserted- deserted until I, Deborah, took a stand- took a stand as a mother of Israel.7 The rulers ceased in Israel. They ceased until I, Deborah, arose; Until I arose a mother in Israel.7 The peasantry ceased in Israel, they ceased until you arose, Deb'orah, arose as a mother in Israel.
8 "New gods were chosen; Then war was in the gates. Not a shield or a spear was seen Among forty thousand in Israel.8 They chose new gods; then was war in the gates: was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?8 When the people chose new gods, war broke out inside the city gates. Not a weapon was seen among 40,000 in Israel.8 They chose new gods. Then war was in the gates. 9 "My heart goes out to the commanders of Israel, The volunteers among the people; Bless the LORD!9 My heart is toward the governors of Israel, that offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless ye the LORD.9 My heart goes out to Israel's commanders, to those people who volunteered. Praise the LORD!9 My heart is toward the governors of Israel, who offered themselves willingly among the people. 10 "You who ride on white donkeys, You who sit on rich carpets, And you who travel on the road-- sing!10 Speak, ye that ride on white asses, ye that sit in judgment, and walk by the way.10 You people who ride on brown donkeys, who sit on saddle blankets, and who walk on the road-think.10 "Tell [of it], you who ride on white donkeys, you who sit on rich carpets, and you who walk by the way.10 "Tell of it, you who ride on tawny asses, you who sit on rich carpets and you who walk by the way.

11 "At the sound of those who divide flocks among the watering places, There they shall recount the righteous deeds of the LORD, The righteous deeds for His peasantry in Israel. Then the people of the LORD went down to the gates.11 They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the LORD, even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel: then shall the people of the LORD go down to the gates.11 Listen to the voices of those singing at the wells. Over and over again they repeat the victories of the LORD, the victories for his villages in Israel. Then the LORD's people went down to the city gates. 11 Far from the noise of archers, in the places of drawing water, there they will rehearse the righteous acts of Yahweh, [Even] the righteous acts of his rule in Israel. "Then the people of Yahweh went down to the gates.11 To the sound of musicians at the watering places, there they repeat the triumphs of the LORD, the triumphs of his peasantry in Israel. "Then down to the gates marched the people of the LORD.
12 "Awake, awake, Deborah; Awake, awake, sing a song! Arise, Barak, and take away your captives, O son of Abinoam.12 Awake, awake, Deborah: awake, awake, utter a song: arise, Barak, and lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam.12 Get up! Get up, Deborah! Get up! Get up and create a song! Barak, attack! Take your prisoners, son of Abinoam.12 'Awake, awake, Deborah! Awake, awake, utter a song! Arise, Barak, and lead away your captives, you son of Abinoam.'12 "Awake, awake, Deb'orah! Awake, awake, utter a song! Arise, Barak, lead away your captives, O son of Abin'o-am.
13 "Then survivors came down to the nobles; The people of the LORD came down to me as warriors.13 Then he made him that remaineth have dominion over the nobles among the people: the LORD made me have dominion over the mighty.13 Then those mighty men who were left came down. The LORD's people went into battle for me against the mighty soldiers.13 "Then a remnant of the nobles [and] the people came down. Yahweh came down for me against the mighty.13 Then down marched the remnant of the noble; the people of the LORD marched down for him against the mighty.
14 "From Ephraim those whose root is in Amalek came down, Following you, Benjamin, with your peoples; From Machir commanders came down, And from Zebulun those who wield the staff of office.14 Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.14 Those who had settled in Amalek's country came down from Ephraim. Benjamin came with its troops after Ephraim. Commanders from Machir went into battle. The officers from Zebulun also went.14 Those whose root is in Amalek came out of Ephraim, after you, Benjamin, among your peoples. Governors come down out of Machir. Those who handle the marshal's staff came out of Zebulun.14 From E'phraim they set out thither into the valley, following you, Benjamin, with your kinsmen; from Machir marched down the commanders, and from Zeb'ulun those who bear the marshal's staff;
15 "And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; As was Issachar, so was Barak; Into the valley they rushed at his heels; Among the divisions of Reuben There were great resolves of heart.15 And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; even Issachar, and also Barak: he was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of Reuben there were great thoughts of heart.15 Issachar's commanders were with Deborah. They were also with Barak, sent into the valley under his command. Among Reuben's divisions important men had second thoughts.15 The princes of Issachar were with Deborah. As was Issachar, so was Barak. They rushed into the valley at his feet. By the watercourses of Reuben, there were great resolves of heart.15 the princes of Is'sachar came with Deb'orah, and Is'sachar faithful to Barak; into the valley they rushed forth at his heels. Among the clans of Reuben there were great searchings of heart.

16 "Why did you sit among the sheepfolds, To hear the piping for the flocks? Among the divisions of Reuben There were great searchings of heart.16 Why abodest thou among the sheepfolds, to hear the bleatings of the flocks? For the divisions of Reuben there were great searchings of heart.16 Why did you sit between the saddlebags? Was it to listen to the shepherds playing their flutes? Reuben's divisions of important men had second thoughts.16 Why did you sit among the sheepfolds, To hear the whistling for the flocks? At the watercourses of Reuben There were great searchings of heart.16 Why did you tarry among the sheepfolds, to hear the piping for the flocks? Among the clans of Reuben there were great searchings of heart.
17 "Gilead remained across the Jordan; And why did Dan stay in ships? Asher sat at the seashore, And remained by its landings.17 Gilead abode beyond Jordan: and why did Dan remain in ships? Asher continued on the sea shore, and abode in his breaches.17 Gilead remained east of the Jordan River. And Dan... Why did he stay by the ships? Asher sat on the seashore and remained along the inlets.17 Gilead lived beyond the Jordan. Why did Dan remain in ships? Asher sat still at the haven of the sea, and lived by his creeks.17 Gilead stayed beyond the Jordan; and Dan, why did he abide with the ships? Asher sat still at the coast of the sea, settling down by his landings.
18 "Zebulun was a people who despised their lives even to death, And Naphtali also, on the high places of the field.18 Zebulun and Naphtali were a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death in the high places of the field.18 But Zebulun mocked death, and Naphtali risked his life on the battlefield.18 Zebulun was a people that jeopardized their lives to the deaths; Naphtali also, on the high places of the field.18 Zeb'ulun is a people that jeoparded their lives to the death; Naph'tali too, on the heights of the field.
19 "The kings came and fought; Then fought the kings of Canaan At Taanach near the waters of Megiddo; They took no plunder in silver.19 The kings came and fought, then fought the kings of Canaan in Taanach by the waters of Megiddo; they took no gain of money.19 Kings came and fought. Then the kings of Canaan fought. They fought at Taanach by the waters of Megiddo. But they didn't carry off any rich loot.19 "The kings came and fought, then the kings of Canaan fought at Taanach by the waters of Megiddo. They took no plunder of silver.19 "The kings came, they fought; then fought the kings of Canaan, at Ta'anach, by the waters of Megid'do; they got no spoils of silver.
20 "The stars fought from heaven, From their courses they fought against Sisera.20 They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera.20 The stars fought from heaven. They fought against Sisera from their heavenly paths.20 From the sky the stars fought. From their courses, they fought against Sisera.20 From heaven fought the stars, from their courses they fought against Sis'era.

21 "The torrent of Kishon swept them away, The ancient torrent, the torrent Kishon. O my soul, march on with strength.21 The river of Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, thou hast trodden down strength.21 The Kishon River swept them away- that old river, the Kishon. I must march on with strength!21 The river Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river Kishon. My soul, march on with strength.21 The torrent Kishon swept them away, the onrushing torrent, the torrent Kishon. March on, my soul, with might!
22 "Then the horses' hoofs beat From the dashing, the dashing of his valiant steeds.22 Then were the horsehoofs broken by the means of the pransings, the pransings of their mighty ones.22 Then the horses' hoofs pounded. The mighty war horses galloped on and on.22 Then the horse hoofs stamped because of the prancings, the prancings of their strong ones.22 "Then loud beat the horses' hoofs with the galloping, galloping of his steeds.
23 'Curse Meroz,' said the angel of the LORD, 'Utterly curse its inhabitants; Because they did not come to the help of the LORD, To the help of the LORD against the warriors.'23 Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of the LORD, curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they came not to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty.23 "Curse Meroz!" said the Messenger of the LORD. "Bitterly curse those who live there! They did not come to help the LORD, to help the LORD and his heroes."23 'Curse Meroz,' said the angel of Yahweh. 'Curse bitterly its inhabitants, because they didn't come to help Yahweh, to help Yahweh against the mighty.'23 "Curse Meroz, says the angel of the LORD, curse bitterly its inhabitants, because they came not to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty.
24 "Most blessed of women is Jael, The wife of Heber the Kenite; Most blessed is she of women in the tent.24 Blessed above women shall Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite be, blessed shall she be above women in the tent.24 Jael, wife of Heber the Kenite, should be the most blessed woman, the most blessed woman living in a tent.24 "Jael shall be blessed above women, the wife of Heber the Kenite; blessed shall she be above women in the tent.24 "Most blessed of women be Ja'el, the wife of Heber the Ken'ite, of tent-dwelling women most blessed.
25 "He asked for water and she gave him milk; In a magnificent bowl she brought him curds.25 He asked water, and she gave him milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly dish.25 Sisera asked for water. She gave him milk. She offered him buttermilk in a royal bowl.25 He asked for water. She gave him milk. 26 "She reached out her hand for the tent peg, And her right hand for the workmen's hammer. Then she struck Sisera, she smashed his head; And she shattered and pierced his temple.26 She put her hand to the nail, and her right hand to the workmen's hammer; and with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote off his head, when she had pierced and stricken through his temples.26 She reached for a tent peg with one hand, for a workman's hammer with the other. She struck Sisera. She crushed his head. She shattered and pierced his temples.26 She put her hand to the tent peg, and her right hand to the workmen's hammer. With the hammer she struck Sisera. She struck through his head. 27 "Between her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay; Between her feet he bowed, he fell; Where he bowed, there he fell dead.27 At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay down: at her feet he bowed, he fell: where he bowed, there he fell down dead.27 He sank. 28 "Out of the window she looked and lamented, The mother of Sisera through the lattice, 'Why does his chariot delay in coming? Why do the hoofbeats of his chariots tarry?'28 The mother of Sisera looked out at a window, and cried through the lattice, Why is his chariot so long in coming? why tarry the wheels of his chariots?28 Sisera's mother looked through her window and cried as she peered through the lattice. "Why is his chariot taking so long? Why don't I hear the clatter of his chariots?"28 "Through the window she looked out, and cried: Sisera's mother looked through the lattice. 'Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why do the wheels of his chariots wait?'28 "Out of the window she peered, the mother of Sis'era gazed through the lattice: 'Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why tarry the hoofbeats of his chariots?'
29 "Her wise princesses would answer her, Indeed she repeats her words to herself,29 Her wise ladies answered her, yea, she returned answer to herself,29 Her wisest servants gave her an answer. But she kept repeating to herself,29 Her wise ladies answered her, Yes, she returned answer to herself,29 Her wisest ladies make answer, nay, she gives answer to herself,
30 'Are they not finding, are they not dividing the spoil? A maiden, two maidens for every warrior; To Sisera a spoil of dyed work, A spoil of dyed work embroidered, Dyed work of double embroidery on the neck of the spoiler?'30 Have they not sped? have they not divided the prey; to every man a damsel or two; to Sisera a prey of divers colors, a prey of divers colors of needlework, of divers colors of needlework on both sides, meet for the necks of them that take the spoil?30 "They're really finding and dividing the loot: A girl or two for each soldier, colorful clothes for Sisera, colorful, embroidered clothes, and two pieces of colorful, embroidered cloth for the neck of the looter."30 'Have they not found, have they not divided the spoil? A lady, two ladies to every man; to Sisera a spoil of dyed garments, a spoil of dyed garments embroidered, of dyed garments embroidered on both sides, on the necks of the spoil?'30 Are they not finding and dividing the spoil? --A maiden or two for every man; spoil of dyed stuffs for Sis'era, spoil of dyed stuffs embroidered, two pieces of dyed work embroidered for my neck as spoil?'

31 "Thus let all Your enemies perish, O LORD; But let those who love Him be like the rising of the sun in its might." And the land was undisturbed for forty years.31 So let all thine enemies perish, O LORD: but let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.31 May all your enemies die like that, O LORD. But may those who love the LORD be like the sun when it rises in all its brightness. So the land had peace for 40 years.31 "So let all your enemies perish, Yahweh, but let those who love him be as the sun when it rises forth in its strength." Then the land had rest forty years.31 "So perish all thine enemies, O LORD! But thy friends be like the sun as he rises in his might." And the land had rest for forty years.
