Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

1 It happened that when He went into the house of one of the leaders of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, they were watching Him closely.1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.1 On a day of worship Jesus went to eat at the home of a prominent Pharisee. The guests were watching Jesus very closely.1 It happened, when he went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat bread, that they were watching him.1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the rulers, who was of the Pharisees, to eat bread on the sabbath, that they were watching him.
2 And there in front of Him was a man suffering from dropsy.2 And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.2 A man whose body was swollen with fluid was there.2 Behold, a certain man who had dropsy was in front of him.2 And behold, there was a certain dropsical man before him.
3 And Jesus answered and spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?"3 And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?3 Jesus reacted by asking the Pharisees and the experts in Moses' Teachings, "Is it right to heal on the day of worship or not?"3 Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"3 And Jesus answering spoke unto the doctors of the law and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath?
4 But they kept silent. And He took hold of him and healed him, and sent him away.4 And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;4 But they didn't say a thing. So Jesus took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him away.4 But they were silent. He took him, and healed him, and let him go.4 But they were silent. And taking him he healed him and let him go.
5 And He said to them, "Which one of you will have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?"5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?5 Jesus asked them, "If your son or your ox falls into a well on a day of worship, wouldn't you pull him out immediately?"5 He answered them, "Which of you, if your son or an ox fell into a well, wouldn't immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?"5 And answering he said to them, Of which of you shall an ass or ox fall into a well, that he does not straightway pull him up on the sabbath day?

6 And they could make no reply to this.6 And they could not answer him again to these things.6 They couldn't argue with him about this.6 They couldn't answer him regarding these things.6 And they were not able to answer him to these things.
Parable of the Guests
7 And He began speaking a parable to the invited guests when He noticed how they had been picking out the places of honor at the table, saying to them,7 And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them.7 Then Jesus noticed how the guests always chose the places of honor. So he used this illustration when he spoke to them:7 He spoke a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the best seats, and said to them,7 And he spoke a parable to those that were invited, remarking how they chose out the first places, saying to them,
8 "When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for someone more distinguished than you may have been invited by him,8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;8 "When someone invites you to a wedding, don't take the place of honor. Maybe someone more important than you was invited.8 "When you are invited by anyone to a marriage feast, don't sit in the best seat, since perhaps someone more honorable than you might be invited by him,8 When thou art invited by any one to a wedding, do not lay thyself down in the first place at table, lest perhaps a more honourable than thou be invited by him,
9 and he who invited you both will come and say to you, 'Give your place to this man,' and then in disgrace you proceed to occupy the last place.9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.9 Then your host would say to you, 'Give this person your place.' Embarrassed, you would have to take the place of least honor.9 and he who invited both of you would come and tell you, 'Make room for this person.' Then you would begin, with shame, to take the lowest place.9 and he who invited thee and him come and say to thee, Give place to this man, and then thou begin with shame to take the last place.
10 "But when you are invited, go and recline at the last place, so that when the one who has invited you comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher'; then you will have honor in the sight of all who are at the table with you.10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.10 So when you're invited, take the place of least honor. Then, when your host comes, he will tell you, 'Friend, move to a more honorable place.' Then all the other guests will see how you are honored.10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes, he may tell you, 'Friend, move up higher.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you.10 But when thou hast been invited, go and put thyself down in the last place, that when he who has invited thee comes, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have honour before all that are lying at table with thee;

11 "For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.11 Those who honor themselves will be humbled, but people who humble themselves will be honored."11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."11 for every one that exalts himself shall be abased, and he that abases himself shall be exalted.
12 And He also went on to say to the one who had invited Him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you in return and that will be your repayment.12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.12 Then he told the man who had invited him, "When you invite people for lunch or dinner, don't invite only your friends, family, other relatives, or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they will return the favor.12 He also said to the one who had invited him, "When you make a dinner or a supper, don't call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your kinsmen, nor rich neighbors, or perhaps they might also return the favor, and pay you back.12 And he said also to him that had invited him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsfolk, nor rich neighbours, lest it may be they also should invite thee in return, and a recompense be made thee.
13 "But when you give a reception, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:13 Instead, when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the handicapped, the lame, and the blind.13 But when you make a feast, ask the poor, the maimed, the lame, or the blind;13 But when thou makest a feast, call poor, crippled, lame, blind:
14 and you will be blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.14 Then you will be blessed because they don't have any way to pay you back. You will be paid back when those who have God's approval come back to life."14 and you will be blessed, because they don't have the resources to repay you. For you will be repaid in the resurrection of the righteous."14 and thou shalt be blessed; for they have not the means to recompense thee; for it shall be recompensed thee in the resurrection of the just.
15 When one of those who were reclining at the table with Him heard this, he said to Him, "Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!"15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.15 One of those eating with him heard this. So he said to Jesus, "The person who will be at the banquet in the kingdom of God is blessed."15 When one of those who sat at the table with him heard these things, he said to him, "Blessed is he who will feast in the Kingdom of God!"15 And one of those that were lying at table with them, hearing these things, said to him, Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
Parable of the Dinner

16 But He said to him, "A man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many;16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:16 Jesus said to him, "A man gave a large banquet and invited many people.16 But he said to him, "A certain man made a great supper, and he invited many people.16 And he said to him, A certain man made a great supper and invited many.
17 and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; for everything is ready now.'17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.17 When it was time for the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who were invited, 'Come! Everything is ready now.'17 He sent out his servant at supper time to tell those who were invited, 'Come, for everything is ready now.'17 And he sent his bondman at the hour of supper to say to those who were invited, Come, for already all things are ready.
18 "But they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, 'I have bought a piece of land and I need to go out and look at it; please consider me excused.'18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.18 "Everyone asked to be excused. The first said to him, 'I bought a field, and I need to see it. Please excuse me.'18 They all as one began to make excuses. "The first said to him, 'I have bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please have me excused.'18 And all began, without exception, to excuse themselves. The first said to him, I have bought land, and I must go out and see it; I pray thee hold me for excused.
19 "Another one said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please consider me excused.'19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.19 Another said, 'I bought five pairs of oxen, and I'm on my way to see how well they plow. Please excuse me.'19 "Another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I must go try them out. Please have me excused.'19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them; I pray thee hold me for excused.
20 "Another one said, 'I have married a wife, and for that reason I cannot come.'20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.20 Still another said, 'I recently got married, and that's why I can't come.'20 "Another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I can't come.'20 And another said, I have married a wife, and on this account I cannot come.

21 "And the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the head of the household became angry and said to his slave, 'Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame.'21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.21 "The servant went back to report this to his master. Then the master of the house became angry. He told his servant, 'Run to every street and alley in the city! Bring back the poor, the handicapped, the blind, and the lame.'21 "That servant came, and told his lord these things. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor, maimed, blind, and lame.'21 And the bondman came up and brought back word of these things to his lord. Then the master of the house, in anger, said to his bondman, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring here the poor and crippled and lame and blind.
22 "And the slave said, 'Master, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.'22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.22 "The servant said, 'Sir, what you've ordered has been done. But there is still room for more people.'22 "The servant said, 'Lord, it is done as you commanded, and there is still room.'22 And the bondman said, Sir, it is done as thou hast commanded, and there is still room.
23 "And the master said to the slave, 'Go out into the highways and along the hedges, and compel them to come in, so that my house may be filled.23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.23 "Then the master told his servant, 'Go to the roads and paths! Urge the people to come to my house. I want it to be full.23 "The lord said to the servant, 'Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.23 And the lord said to the bondman, Go out into the ways and fences and compel to come in, that my house may be filled;
24 'For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste of my dinner.'"24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.24 I can guarantee that none of those invited earlier will taste any food at my banquet.'"24 For I tell you that none of those men who were invited will taste of my supper.'"24 for I say to you, that not one of those men who were invited shall taste of my supper.
Discipleship Tested
25 Now large crowds were going along with Him; and He turned and said to them,25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus. He turned to them and said,25 Now great multitudes were going with him. He turned and said to them,25 And great crowds went with him; and, turning round, he said to them,

26 "If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.26 "If people come to me and are not ready to abandon their fathers, mothers, wives, children, brothers, and sisters, as well as their own lives, they cannot be my disciples.26 "If anyone comes to me, and doesn't disregard his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he can't be my disciple.26 If any man come to me, and shall not hate his own father and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, yea, and his own life too, he cannot be my disciple;
27 "Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.27 So those who do not carry their crosses and follow me cannot be my disciples.27 Whoever doesn't bear his own cross, and come after me, can't be my disciple.27 and whoever does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
28 "For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?28 "Suppose you want to build a tower. You would first sit down and figure out what it costs. Then you would see if you have enough money to finish it.28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doesn't first sit down and count the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it?28 For which of you, desirous of building a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, if he have what is needed to complete it;
29 "Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him,29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,29 Otherwise, if you lay a foundation and can't finish the building, everyone who watches will make fun of you.29 Or perhaps, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, everyone who sees begins to mock him,29 in order that, having laid the foundation of it, and not being able to finish it, all who see it do not begin to mock at him,
30 saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish.'30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.30 They'll say, 'This person started to build but couldn't finish the job.'30 saying, 'This man began to build, and wasn't able to finish.'30 saying, This man began to build and was not able to finish?

31 "Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand?31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?31 "Or suppose a king is going to war against another king. He would first sit down and think things through. Can he and his 10,000 soldiers fight against a king with 20,000 soldiers?31 Or what king, as he goes to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?31 Or what king, going on his way to engage in war with another king, does not, sitting down first, take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him coming against him with twenty thousand?
32 "Or else, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.32 If he can't, he'll send ambassadors to ask for terms of peace while the other king is still far away.32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an envoy, and asks for conditions of peace.32 and if not, while he is yet far off, having sent an embassy, he asks for terms of peace.
33 "So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.33 In the same way, none of you can be my disciples unless you give up everything.33 So therefore whoever of you who doesn't renounce all that he has, he can't be my disciple.33 Thus then every one of you who forsakes not all that is his own cannot be my disciple.
34 "Therefore, salt is good; but if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned?34 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?34 "Salt is good. But if salt loses its taste, how will you restore its flavor?34 Salt is good, but if the salt becomes flat and tasteless, with what do you season it?34 Salt then is good, but if the salt also has become savourless, wherewith shall it be seasoned?
35 "It is useless either for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear."35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.35 It's not any good for the ground or for the manure pile. People throw it away. "Let the person who has ears listen!"35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. It is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear."35 It is proper neither for land nor for dung; it is cast out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
