Chaldeans Used to Punish Judah | ||||

1 The oracle which Habakkuk the prophet saw. | 1 The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see. | 1 The divine revelation that the prophet Habakkuk saw. | 1 The oracle which Habakkuk the prophet saw. | 1 The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see. | 2 How long, O LORD, will I call for help, And You will not hear? I cry out to You, "Violence!" Yet You do not save. | 2 O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save! | 2 How long, O LORD, am I to cry for help, but you will not listen? I cry out to you, "There's violence!" yet you will not come to the rescue. | 2 Yahweh, how long will I cry, and you will not hear? I cry out to you "Violence!" and will you not save? | 2 Jehovah, how long shall I cry and thou wilt not hear? I cry out unto thee, Violence! and thou dost not save. | 3 Why do You make me see iniquity, And cause me to look on wickedness? Yes, destruction and violence are before me; Strife exists and contention arises. | 3 Why dost thou shew me iniquity, and cause me to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence are before me: and there are that raise up strife and contention. | 3 Why do you make me see wrongdoing? And why do you watch wickedness? Destruction and violence are in front of me. Quarrels and disputes arise. | 3 Why do you show me iniquity, and look at perversity? For destruction and violence are before me. There is strife, and contention rises up. | 3 Why dost thou cause me to see iniquity, and lookest thou upon grievance? For spoiling and violence are before me; and there is strife, and contention riseth up. | 4 Therefore the law is ignored And justice is never upheld. For the wicked surround the righteous; Therefore justice comes out perverted. | 4 Therefore the law is slacked, and judgment doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceedeth. | 4 That is why your teaching is numbed, and justice is never carried out. Wicked people surround righteous people so that when justice is carried out, it's perverted. | 4 Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth; for the wicked surround the righteous; therefore justice goes forth perverted. | 4 Therefore the law is powerless, and justice doth never go forth; for the wicked encompasseth the righteous; therefore judgment goeth forth perverted. | 5 "Look among the nations! Observe! Be astonished! Wonder! Because I am doing something in your days-- You would not believe if you were told. | 5 Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvelously: for I will work a work in your days which ye will not believe, though it be told you. | 5 Look among the nations and watch. Be amazed and astonished. I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe even if it were reported to you. | 5 "Look among the nations, watch, and wonder marvelously; for I am working a work in your days, which you will not believe though it is told you. | 5 See ye among the nations, and behold, and wonder marvellously; for I work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be declared to you. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
6 "For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans, That fierce and impetuous people Who march throughout the earth To seize dwelling places which are not theirs. | 6 For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwellingplaces that are not their's. | 6 I am going to send the Babylonians, that fierce and reckless nation. They will march throughout the earth to take possession of lands that don't belong to them. | 6 For, behold, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, that march through the breadth of the earth, to possess dwelling places that are not theirs. | 6 For behold, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and impetuous nation, which marcheth through the breadth of the earth, to possess dwelling-places that are not theirs. | 7 "They are dreaded and feared; Their justice and authority originate with themselves. | 7 They are terrible and dreadful: their judgment and their dignity shall proceed of themselves. | 7 They will be terrifying and fearsome. They will carry out their own kind of justice and honor. | 7 They are feared and dreaded. Their judgment and their dignity proceed from themselves. | 7 They are terrible and dreadful: their judgment and their dignity proceed from themselves. | 8 "Their horses are swifter than leopards And keener than wolves in the evening. Their horsemen come galloping, Their horsemen come from afar; They fly like an eagle swooping down to devour. | 8 Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves: and their horsemen shall spread themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as the eagle that hasteth to eat. | 8 Their horses will be faster than leopards and quicker than wolves in the evening. Their riders will gallop along proudly. Their riders will come from far away. They will fly like an eagle that swoops down for its prey. | 8 Their horses also are swifter than leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves. Their horsemen press proudly on. Yes, their horsemen come from afar. They fly as an eagle that hurries to devour. | 8 And their horses are swifter than the leopards, and are more agile than the evening wolves; and their horsemen prance proudly, and their horsemen come from afar: they fly as an eagle that hasteth to devour. | 9 "All of them come for violence. Their horde of faces moves forward. They collect captives like sand. | 9 They shall come all for violence: their faces shall sup up as the east wind, and they shall gather the captivity as the sand. | 9 They will all come for violence. Every face will be directed forward. They will gather prisoners like sand. | 9 All of them come for violence. Their hordes face the desert. He gathers prisoners like sand. | 9 They come all of them for violence: the crowd of their faces is forwards, and they gather captives as the sand. | 10 "They mock at kings And rulers are a laughing matter to them. They laugh at every fortress And heap up rubble to capture it. | 10 And they shall scoff at the kings, and the princes shall be a scorn unto them: they shall deride every strong hold; for they shall heap dust, and take it. | 10 They will make fun of kings and treat rulers as a joke. They will laugh at every fortified city and build a dirt ramp to capture it. | 10 Yes, he scoffs at kings, and princes are a derision to him. He laughs at every stronghold, for he builds up an earthen ramp, and takes it. | 10 Yea, he scoffeth at kings, and princes are a scorn unto him; he derideth every stronghold: for he heapeth up dust, and taketh it. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
11 "Then they will sweep through like the wind and pass on. But they will be held guilty, They whose strength is their god." | 11 Then shall his mind change, and he shall pass over, and offend, imputing this his power unto his god. | 11 They will move quickly and pass through like the wind. So they will be guilty, because their own strength is their god. | 11 Then he sweeps by like the wind, and goes on. He is indeed guilty, whose strength is his god." | 11 Then will his mind change, and he will pass on, and become guilty: this his power is become his +god. | 12 Are You not from everlasting, O LORD, my God, my Holy One? We will not die. You, O LORD, have appointed them to judge; And You, O Rock, have established them to correct. | 12 Art thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction. | 12 Didn't you exist before time began, O LORD, my God, my Holy One? We will not die! O LORD, you have appointed the Babylonians to bring judgment. O Rock, you have destined them to correct us. | 12 Aren't you from everlasting, Yahweh my God, my Holy One? We will not die. Yahweh, you have appointed him for judgment. You, Rock, have established him to punish. | 12 Art thou not from everlasting, Jehovah my God, my Holy One? We shall not die. Jehovah, thou hast ordained him for judgment; and thou, O Rock, hast appointed him for correction. | 13 Your eyes are too pure to approve evil, And You can not look on wickedness with favor. Why do You look with favor On those who deal treacherously? Why are You silent when the wicked swallow up Those more righteous than they? | 13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he? | 13 Your eyes are too pure to look at evil. You can't watch wickedness. Why do you keep watching treacherous people? Why are you silent when wicked people swallow those who are more righteous than they are? | 13 You who have purer eyes than to see evil, and who cannot look on perversity, why do you tolerate those who deal treacherously, and keep silent when the wicked swallows up the man who is more righteous than he, | 13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on mischief: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and keepest silence when the wicked swalloweth up a man more righteous than he? | 14 Why have You made men like the fish of the sea, Like creeping things without a ruler over them? | 14 And makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them? | 14 You make all people like the fish in the sea, like schools of sea life that have no ruler. | 14 and make men like the fish of the sea, like the creeping things, that have no ruler over them? | 14 And thou makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them. | 15 The Chaldeans bring all of them up with a hook, Drag them away with their net, And gather them together in their fishing net. Therefore they rejoice and are glad. | 15 They take up all of them with the angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag: therefore they rejoice and are glad. | 15 The Babylonians pull them all up with fishhooks, drag them away in nets, and gather them in dragnets. So they rejoice and are happy. | 15 He takes up all of them with the hook. He catches them in his net, and gathers them in his dragnet. Therefore he rejoices and is glad. | 15 He taketh up all of them with the hook, he catcheth them in his net, and gathereth them into his drag; therefore he rejoiceth and is glad: | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
16 Therefore they offer a sacrifice to their net And burn incense to their fishing net; Because through these things their catch is large, And their food is plentiful. | 16 Therefore they sacrifice unto their net, and burn incense unto their drag; because by them their portion is fat, and their meat plenteous. | 16 That is why they sacrifice to their nets and burn incense to their dragnets. They are rich and well fed because of them. | 16 Therefore he sacrifices to his net, and burns incense to his dragnet, because by them his life is luxurious, and his food is good. | 16 therefore he sacrificeth unto his net, and burneth incense unto his drag; for by them his portion is become fat, and his meat dainty. | 17 Will they therefore empty their net And continually slay nations without sparing? | 17 Shall they therefore empty their net, and not spare continually to slay the nations? | 17 Will they keep on emptying their nets and always kill nations without mercy? | 17 Will he therefore continually empty his net, and kill the nations without mercy? | 17 Shall he therefore empty his net, and not spare to slay the nations continually? |
