David Made King over All Israel
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
1 Then all Israel gathered to David at Hebron and said, "Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.1 Then all Israel gathered themselves to David unto Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.1 All Israel gathered around David at Hebron. "We are your own flesh and blood," they said.1 Then all Israel gathered themselves to David to Hebron, saying, "Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.1 And all Israel assembled themselves to David to Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.
2 "In times past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led out and brought in Israel; and the LORD your God said to you, 'You shall shepherd My people Israel, and you shall be prince over My people Israel.'"2 And moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel.2 "Even in the past when Saul ruled, you were the one who led Israel on its campaigns to war. The LORD your God has said to you, 'You will be shepherd of my people Israel, the leader of my people Israel.'"2 In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. Yahweh your God said to you, 'You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over my people Israel.'"2 Even aforetime, even when Saul was king, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel; and Jehovah thy God said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be prince over my people Israel.
3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD through Samuel.3 Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel.3 All the leaders of Israel had come to Hebron. David made an agreement with them at Hebron in front of the LORD. So they anointed David king of Israel, as the LORD had spoken through Samuel.3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before Yahweh; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of Yahweh by Samuel.3 And all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before Jehovah; and they anointed David king over Israel according to the word of Jehovah through Samuel.
Jerusalem, Capital City
4 Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there.4 And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus; where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land.4 David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). The Jebusites were living in that region.4 David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (the same is Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there.4 And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus; where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land.
5 The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You shall not enter here." Nevertheless David captured the stronghold of Zion (that is, the city of David).5 And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not come hither. Nevertheless David took the castle of Zion, which is the city of David.5 They told David, "You will never get in here." But David captured the fortress Zion (that is, the City of David).5 The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You shall not come in here." Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion. The same is the city of David.5 And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not come in hither. But David took the stronghold of Zion, which is the city of David.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
6 Now David had said, "Whoever strikes down a Jebusite first shall be chief and commander." Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief.6 And David said, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. So Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief.6 Now, David said, "Whoever is the first to kill a Jebusite will be made a general and a prince." Zeruiah's son Joab was the first to go [into Jerusalem], so he became the general.6 David said, "Whoever strikes the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain." Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, and was made chief.6 And David said, Whoever smites the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. And Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief.
7 Then David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David.7 And David dwelt in the castle; therefore they called it the city of David.7 David lived in the fortress, so it was called the City of David.7 David lived in the stronghold; therefore they called it the city of David.7 And David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore they called it the city of David.
8 He built the city all around, from the Millo even to the surrounding area; and Joab repaired the rest of the city.8 And he built the city round about, even from Millo round about: and Joab repaired the rest of the city.8 He built the city [of Jerusalem] around it, starting from the Millo and making a complete circuit. Joab rebuilt the rest of the city. 8 He built the city all around, from Millo even around; and Joab repaired the rest of the city.8 And he built the city round about, even from the Millo round about; and Joab renewed the rest of the city.
9 David became greater and greater, for the LORD of hosts was with him.9 So David waxed greater and greater: for the LORD of hosts was with him.9 David continued to grow more powerful because the LORD of Armies was with him.9 David grew greater and greater; for Yahweh of Armies was with him.9 And David became continually greater; and Jehovah of hosts was with him.
David’s Mighty Men
10 Now these are the heads of the mighty men whom David had, who gave him strong support in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.10 These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.10 Now, these were the commanders of David's fighting men, who exercised power with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel they made him king according to the LORD's word to Israel.10 Now these are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who showed themselves strong with him in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of Yahweh concerning Israel.10 And these are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who shewed themselves valiant with him in his kingdom, with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of Jehovah concerning Israel.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
11 These constitute the list of the mighty men whom David had: Jashobeam, the son of a Hachmonite, the chief of the thirty; he lifted up his spear against three hundred whom he killed at one time.11 And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; Jashobeam, an Hachmonite, the chief of the captains: he lifted up his spear against three hundred slain by him at one time.11 The first of David's fighting men was Jashobeam, son of Hachmon, the leader of the three. He used his spear to kill 300 men on one occasion. 11 This is the number of the mighty men whom David had: Jashobeam, the son of a Hachmonite, the chief of the thirty; he lifted up his spear against three hundred and killed them at one time.11 And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had: Jashobeam, the son of Hachmoni, the chief of the captains; he brandished his spear against three hundred, slain by him at one time.
12 After him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighty men.12 And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighties.12 Next in rank to him was Eleazar, another one of the three fighting men. He was the son of Dodo and grandson of Aho.12 After him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighty men.12 And after him, Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite; he was one of the three mighty men.
13 He was with David at Pasdammim when the Philistines were gathered together there to battle, and there was a plot of ground full of barley; and the people fled before the Philistines.13 He was with David at Pasdammim, and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, where was a parcel of ground full of barley; and the people fled from before the Philistines.13 Eleazar was with David at Pas Dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. There was a field of ripe barley. When the troops fled from the Philistines,13 He was with David at Pasdammim, and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, where there was a plot of ground full of barley; and the people fled from before the Philistines.13 He was with David at Pas-dammim, where the Philistines were gathered together to battle; and there was there a plot of ground full of barley; and the people had fled from before the Philistines.
14 They took their stand in the midst of the plot and defended it, and struck down the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great victory.14 And they set themselves in the midst of that parcel, and delivered it, and slew the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great deliverance.14 they stood in the middle of the field and defended it by killing Philistines. So the LORD saved [them] with an impressive victory.14 They stood in the midst of the plot, and defended it, and killed the Philistines; and Yahweh saved them by a great victory.14 And they stood in the midst of the plot and delivered it, and smote the Philistines; and Jehovah wrought a great deliverance.
15 Now three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam, while the army of the Philistines was camping in the valley of Rephaim.15 Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim.15 Once three of the thirty leading men went down to David's rock at the cave of Adullam when the army of the Philistines was camping in the valley of Rephaim.15 Three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the army of the Philistines were encamped in the valley of Rephaim.15 And three of the thirty chiefs went down to the rock to David, to the cave of Adullam, when the army of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Rephaim.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
16 David was then in the stronghold, while the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.16 And David was then in the hold, and the Philistines' garrison was then at Bethlehem.16 While David was in the fortified camp, Philistine troops were in Bethlehem.16 David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.16 And David was then in the stronghold; and the Philistines' garrison was then at Bethlehem.
17 David had a craving and said, "Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!"17 And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate!17 David was thirsty and said, "I wish I could have a drink of water from the cistern at the city gate of Bethlehem."17 David longed, and said, "Oh that one would give me water to drink of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!"17 And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me to drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is in the gate!
18 So the three broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water from the well of Bethlehem which was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David; nevertheless David would not drink it, but poured it out to the LORD;18 And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD.18 So the three burst into the Philistine camp and drew water from the cistern. They brought it to David, but he refused to drink it. He poured it out [as an offering] to the LORD18 The three broke through the army of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to Yahweh,18 And the three broke through the camp of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, which is in the gate, and took it, and brought it to David; David however would not drink of it, but poured it out to Jehovah.
19 and he said, "Be it far from me before my God that I should do this. Shall I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives? For at the risk of their lives they brought it." Therefore he would not drink it. These things the three mighty men did.19 And said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.19 and said, "It's unthinkable that I would do this, God. Should I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives? They had to risk their lives to get this water." So he refused to drink it. These are the things which the three fighting men did.19 and said, "My God forbid it me, that I should do this! Shall I drink the blood of these men who have put their lives in jeopardy?" For they risked their lives to bring it. Therefore he would not drink it. The three mighty men did these things.19 And he said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing! should I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives? for at the risk of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.
20 As for Abshai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the thirty, and he swung his spear against three hundred and killed them; and he had a name as well as the thirty.20 And Abishai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the three: for lifting up his spear against three hundred, he slew them, and had a name among the three.20 Joab's brother Abishai was the leader of the thirty. He used his spear to kill 300 men, but he was not one of the three,20 Abishai, the brother of Joab, he was chief of the three; for he lifted up his spear against three hundred and killed them, and had a name among the three.20 And Abishai the brother of Joab, he was the chief of three; and he brandished his spear against three hundred and slew them; and he had a name among the three.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
21 Of the three in the second rank he was the most honored and became their commander; however, he did not attain to the first three.21 Of the three, he was more honorable than the two; for he was their captain: howbeit he attained not to the first three.21 although he was honored more than they were. So he became their captain but didn't become a member of the three.21 Of the three, he was more honorable than the two, and was made their captain: however he didn't attain to the [first] three.21 Of the three he was more honourable than the two, and he was their captain; but he did not attain to the first three.
22 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, mighty in deeds, struck down the two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion inside a pit on a snowy day.22 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done many acts; he slew two lionlike men of Moab: also he went down and slew a lion in a pit in a snowy day.22 Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, was from Kabzeel and was a brave man who did many things. He killed two distinguished soldiers from Moab. He also went into a cistern and killed a lion on the day it snowed.22 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done mighty deeds, he killed the two [sons of] Ariel of Moab: he went down also and killed a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow.22 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man, great in exploits, of Kabzeel: he it was that smote two lions of Moab; and he went down and smote a lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day.
23 He killed an Egyptian, a man of great stature five cubits tall. Now in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam, but he went down to him with a club and snatched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear.23 And he slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and slew him with his own spear.23 He killed an eight-foot-tall Egyptian. The Egyptian had a spear like a weaver's beam in his hand. But Benaiah went to him with a club, grabbed the spear away from him, and killed him with it.23 He killed an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and killed him with his own spear.23 He also smote the Egyptian, a man of stature, five cubits high: and in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and slew him with his own spear.
24 These things Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did, and had a name as well as the three mighty men.24 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among the three mighties.24 These are the things that Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, did. He was as famous as the three fighting men.24 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had a name among the three mighty men.24 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and he had a name among the three mighty men.
25 Behold, he was honored among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three; and David appointed him over his guard.25 Behold, he was honorable among the thirty, but attained not to the first three: and David set him over his guard.25 He was honored more than the thirty, but he was not a member of the three. David put him in charge of his bodyguards.25 Behold, he was more honorable than the thirty, but he didn't attain to the [first] three: and David set him over his guard.25 Behold, he was honoured above the thirty, but he did not attain to the first three. And David set him in his council.
