| 1 Now concerning things sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies. | 1 Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth. | 1 Now, concerning food offered to false gods: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge makes people arrogant, but love builds them up. | 1 Now concerning things sacrificed to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. | 1 But concerning things sacrificed to idols, we know, (for we all have knowledge: knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. | 2 If anyone supposes that he knows anything, he has not yet known as he ought to know; | 2 And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know. | 2 Those who think they know something still have a lot to learn. | 2 But if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he doesn't yet know as he ought to know. | 2 If any one think he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know it. | 3 but if anyone loves God, he is known by Him. | 3 But if any man love God, the same is known of him. | 3 But if they love God, they are known by God. | 3 But if anyone loves God, the same is known by him. | 3 But if any one love God, he is known of him): | 4 Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that there is no such thing as an idol in the world, and that there is no God but one. | 4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one. | 4 Now about eating food that was offered to false gods: We know that the false gods in this world don't really exist and that no god exists except the one God. | 4 Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that no idol is anything in the world, and that there is no other God but one. | 4 concerning then the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God save one. | 5 For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, | 5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) | 5 People may say that there are gods in heaven and on earth-many gods and many lords, as they would call them. | 5 For though there are things that are called "gods," whether in the heavens or on earth; as there are many "gods" and many "lords;" | 5 For and if indeed there are those called gods, whether in heaven or on earth, (as there are gods many, and lords many,) | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
| 6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him. | 6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. | 6 But for us, "There is only one God, the Father. Some people are so used to worshiping false gods that they believe they are eating food offered to a false god. So they feel guilty because their conscience is weak. | 7 However, that knowledge isn't in all men. But some, with consciousness of the idol until now, eat as of a thing sacrificed to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. | 7 But knowledge is not in all: but some, with conscience of the idol, until now eat as of a thing sacrificed to idols; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. | 8 But food will not commend us to God; we are neither the worse if we do not eat, nor the better if we do eat. | 8 But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse. | 8 Food will not affect our relationship with God. We are no worse off if we eat [that food] and no better off if we don't. | 8 But food will not commend us to God. For neither, if we don't eat, are we the worse; nor, if we eat, are we the better. | 8 But meat does not commend us to God; neither if we should not eat do we come short; nor if we should eat have we an advantage. | 9 But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. | 9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of your's become a stumblingblock to them that are weak. | 9 But be careful that by using your freedom you don't somehow make a believer who is weak in faith fall into sin. | 9 But be careful that by no means does this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to the weak. | 9 But see lest anywise this your right to eat itself be a stumbling-block to the weak. | 10 For if someone sees you, who have knowledge, dining in an idol's temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be strengthened to eat things sacrificed to idols? | 10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols; | 10 For example, suppose someone with a weak conscience sees you, who have this knowledge, eating in the temple of a false god. Won't you be encouraging that person to eat food offered to a false god? | 10 For if a man sees you who have knowledge sitting in an idol's temple, won't his conscience, if he is weak, be emboldened to eat things sacrificed to idols? | 10 For if any one see thee, who hast knowledge, sitting at table in an idol-house, shall not his conscience, he being weak, be emboldened to eat the things sacrificed to the idol? | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
| 11 For through your knowledge he who is weak is ruined, the brother for whose sake Christ died. | 11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? | 11 In that case, your knowledge is ruining a believer whose faith is weak, a believer for whom Christ died. | 11 And through your knowledge, he who is weak perishes, the brother for whose sake Christ died. | 11 and the weak one, the brother for whose sake Christ died, will perish through thy knowledge. | 12 And so, by sinning against the brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. | 12 But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ. | 12 When you sin against other believers in this way and harm their weak consciences, you are sinning against Christ. | 12 Thus, sinning against the brothers, and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. | 12 Now, thus sinning against the brethren, and wounding their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ. | 13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause my brother to stumble. | 13 Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend. | 13 Therefore, if eating food [offered to false gods] causes other believers to lose their faith, I will never eat that kind of food so that I won't make other believers lose their faith. | 13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will eat no meat forevermore, that I don't cause my brother to stumble. | 13 Wherefore if meat be a fall-trap to my brother, I will eat no flesh for ever, that I may not be a fall-trap to my brother. |
