Sanctification and Love | ||||
NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
1 Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and please God (just as you actually do walk), that you excel still more. | 1 Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more. | 1 Now then, brothers and sisters, because of the Lord Jesus we ask and encourage you to excel in living a God-pleasing life even more than you already do. Do this the way we taught you. | 1 Finally then, brothers, we beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, that you abound more and more. | 1 For the rest, then, brethren, we beg you and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, even as ye have received from us how ye ought to walk and please God, even as ye also do walk, that ye would abound still more. | 2 For you know what commandments we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. | 2 For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. | 2 You know what orders we gave you through the Lord Jesus. | 2 For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. | 2 For ye know what charges we gave you through the Lord Jesus. | 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; | 3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: | 3 It is God's will that you keep away from sexual sin as a mark of your devotion to him. | 3 For this is the will of God: your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, | 3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication; | 4 that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, | 4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; | 4 Each of you should know that finding a husband or wife for yourself is to be done in a holy and honorable way, | 4 that each one of you know how to possess himself of his own vessel in sanctification and honor, | 4 that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honour, | 5 not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God; | 5 Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: | 5 not in the passionate, lustful way of people who don't know God. | 5 not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who don't know God; | 5 (not in passionate desire, even as the nations who know not God,) | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
6 and that no man transgress and defraud his brother in the matter because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you before and solemnly warned you. | 6 That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. | 6 No one should take advantage of or exploit other believers that way. The Lord is the one who punishes people for all these things. We've already told you and warned you about this. | 6 that no one should take advantage of and wrong a brother or sister in this matter; because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified. | 6 not overstepping the rights of and wronging his brother in the matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all these things, even as we also told you before, and have fully testified. | 7 For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification. | 7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. | 7 God didn't call us to be sexually immoral but to be holy. | 7 For God called us not for uncleanness, but in sanctification. | 7 For God has not called us to uncleanness, but in sanctification. | 8 So, he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit to you. | 8 He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit. | 8 Therefore, whoever rejects this [order] is not rejecting human authority but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit. | 8 Therefore he who rejects this doesn't reject man, but God, who has also given his Holy Spirit to you. | 8 He therefore that in this disregards his brother, disregards, not man, but God, who has given also his Holy Spirit to you. | 9 Now as to the love of the brethren, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; | 9 But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another. | 9 You don't need anyone to write to you about the way Christians should love each other. God has taught you to love each other. | 9 But concerning brotherly love, you have no need that one write to you. For you yourselves are taught by God to love one another, | 9 Now concerning brotherly love ye have no need that we should write to you, for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another. | 10 for indeed you do practice it toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, to excel still more, | 10 And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more; | 10 In fact, you are showing love to all the Christians throughout the province of Macedonia. We encourage you as believers to excel in love even more. | 10 for indeed you do it toward all the brothers who are in all Macedonia. But we exhort you, brothers, that you abound more and more; | 10 For also ye do this towards all the brethren in the whole of Macedonia; but we exhort you, brethren, to abound still more, | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you, | 11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; | 11 Also, make it your goal to live quietly, do your work, and earn your own living, as we ordered you. | 11 and that you make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, even as we instructed you; | 11 and to seek earnestly to be quiet and mind your own affairs, and work with your own hands, even as we charged you, | 12 so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need. | 12 That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing. | 12 Then your way of life will win respect from those outside [the church], and you won't have to depend on anyone else for what you need. | 12 that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and may have need of nothing. | 12 that ye may walk reputably towards those without, and may have need of no one. | Those Who Died in Christ |
13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. | 13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. | 13 Brothers and sisters, we don't want you to be ignorant about those who have died. We don't want you to grieve like other people who have no hope. | 13 But we don't want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don't grieve like the rest, who have no hope. | 13 But we do not wish you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them that are fallen asleep, to the end that ye be not grieved even as also the rest who have no hope. | 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. | 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. | 14 We believe that Jesus died and came back to life. We also believe that, through Jesus, God will bring back those who have died. They will come back with Jesus. | 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. | 14 For if we believe that Jesus has died and has risen again, so also God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep through Jesus. | 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. | 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. | 15 We are telling you what the Lord taught. We who are still alive when the Lord comes will not go [into his kingdom] ahead of those who have already died. | 15 For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left to the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep. | 15 (For this we say to you in the word of the Lord, that we, the living, who remain to the coming of the Lord, are in no way to anticipate those who have fallen asleep; | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. | 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: | 16 The Lord will come from heaven with a command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet [call] of God. First, the dead who believed in Christ will come back to life. | 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with God's trumpet. The dead in Christ will rise first, | 16 for the Lord himself, with an assembling shout, with archangel's voice and with trump of God, shall descend from heaven; and the dead in Christ shall rise first; | 17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. | 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. | 17 Then, together with them, we who are still alive will be taken in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. In this way we will always be with the Lord. | 17 then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever. | 17 then we, the living who remain, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air; and thus we shall be always with the Lord. | 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words. | 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words. | 18 So then, comfort each other with these words! | 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words. | 18 So encourage one another with these words.) |
