| 1 "Hear this, O house of Jacob, who are named Israel And who came forth from the loins of Judah, Who swear by the name of the LORD And invoke the God of Israel, But not in truth nor in righteousness. | 1 Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the LORD, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness. | 1 Listen to this, descendants of Jacob! You are given the name of Israel. You are descended from Judah. You take oaths by the name of the LORD. Suddenly I acted, and they came to pass. | 3 I have declared the former things from the beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I shewed them; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass. | 3 From the beginning I revealed to you what would happen. These words came out of my mouth, and I made them known. Like iron, you are hardheaded. Like bronze, nothing gets through your thick skull. | 4 Because I knew that you are obstinate, and your neck is an iron sinew, and your brow brass; | 4 Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass, | 5 Therefore I declared them to you long ago, Before they took place I proclaimed them to you, So that you would not say, 'My idol has done them, And my graven image and my molten image have commanded them.' | 5 I have even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I shewed it thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them. | 5 That is why I revealed to you what would happen long ago. I told you about them before they happened. [I did this] so you couldn't say, "My gods have done these things. | 6 "You have heard; look at all this. And you, will you not declare it? I proclaim to you new things from this time, Even hidden things which you have not known. | 6 Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it? I have caused thee to hear new things from this time, and things hidden, and that thou knewest not: | 7 "They are created now and not long ago; And before today you have not heard them, So that you will not say, 'Behold, I knew them.' | 7 They are created now, and not from the beginning; even before the day when thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them. | 7 They are created now, not in the past. You haven't heard about them before today, so you can't say that you already knew about them. | 7 They are created now, and not from of old; and before this day you didn't hear them; lest you should say, 'Behold, I knew them.' | 7 they are created now, and not long ago; and before this day thou hast not heard them, lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them. | 8 "You have not heard, you have not known. Even from long ago your ear has not been open, Because I knew that you would deal very treacherously; And you have been called a rebel from birth. | 8 Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb. | 8 You have never heard about them. You have never known about them. Your ears have never been open to hear them before. I know that you've acted very treacherously and that you have been called a rebel since you were born. | 8 Yes, you didn't hear; yes, you didn't know; yes, from of old your ear was not opened: for I knew that you did deal very treacherously, and was called a transgressor from the womb. | 8 Yea, thou heardest not, yea, thou knewest not, yea, from of old thine ear was not opened; for I knew that thou wouldest ever deal treacherously, and thou wast called a transgressor from the womb. | 9 "For the sake of My name I delay My wrath, And for My praise I restrain it for you, In order not to cut you off. | 9 For my name's sake will I defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off. | 9 For my name's sake I'll be patient. For my glory's sake I'll hold my anger back from you, rather than destroy you. | 9 For my name's sake will I defer my anger, and for my praise will I refrain for you, that I not cut you off. | 9 For my name's sake I will defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain as to thee, that I cut thee not off. | 10 "Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. | 10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. | 10 I have refined you, but not like silver. Why should my name be dishonored? The LORD hath loved him: he will do his pleasure on Babylon, and his arm shall be on the Chaldeans. | 14 Gather together, all of you, and listen. What idol has revealed such things? The LORD loves Cyrus. He will carry out the LORD's plan against Babylon. He will use his strength against the Babylonians. | 14 "Assemble yourselves, all you, and hear; who among them has declared these things? | 16 "Come near to Me, listen to this: From the first I have not spoken in secret, From the time it took place, I was there. Your peace would be like a river [that never runs dry]. Your righteousness would be like waves on the sea. | 18 Oh that you had listened to my commandments! then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea: | 18 Oh that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! Then would thy peace have been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea; | 19 "Your descendants would have been like the sand, And your offspring like its grains; Their name would never be cut off or destroyed from My presence." | 19 Thy seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the gravel thereof; his name should not have been cut off nor destroyed from before me. | 19 Your descendants would be like sand. Your children would be like its grains. Shout for joy as you tell it and announce it. Shout it out to the ends of the earth.
