A Satire on Idolatry

Hear the word which the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel.1 Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:1 Listen to the message that the LORD has spoken to you, nation of Israel.1 Hear the word which Yahweh speaks to you, house of Israel!1 Hear the word that Jehovah speaketh unto you, house of Israel.
Thus says the LORD, "Do not learn the way of the nations, And do not be terrified by the signs of the heavens Although the nations are terrified by them;2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.2 This is what the LORD says: Don't learn the practices of the nations. Don't be frightened by the signs in the sky because the nations are frightened by them.2 Thus says Yahweh, "Don't learn the way of the nations, and don't be dismayed at the signs of the sky; for the nations are dismayed at them.2 Thus saith Jehovah: Learn not the way of the nations, and be not dismayed at the signs of the heavens; for the nations are dismayed at them.
 For the customs of the peoples are delusion; Because it is wood cut from the forest, The work of the hands of a craftsman with a cutting tool.3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.3 The religion of the people is worthless. Woodcutters cut down trees from the forest. The hands of craftsmen prepare them with axes.3 For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the axe.3 For the statutes of the peoples are vanity; for it is a tree cut out of the forest, worked with a chisel by the hands of the artizan;
"They decorate it with silver and with gold; They fasten it with nails and with hammers So that it will not totter.4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.4 Craftsmen decorate them with silver and gold and fasten them [together] with hammers and nails so that they won't fall over.4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it not move.4 they deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
"Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field are they, And they cannot speak; They must be carried, Because they cannot walk! Do not fear them, For they can do no harm, Nor can they do any good."5 They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.5 These trees are like scarecrows in cucumber gardens. They aren't able to speak. They have to be carried, because they can't walk. Don't be afraid of them. They can't harm you. They can't do you any good either.5 They are like a palm tree, of turned work, and don't speak: they must be carried, because they can't go. Don't be afraid of them; for they can't do evil, neither is it in them to do good."5 They are as a palm-column of turned work, and they speak not; they are carried, for they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
There is none like You, O LORD; You are great, and great is Your name in might.6 Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.6 No one is like you, O LORD. You are great. Your name is powerful.6 There is none like you, Yahweh; you are great, and your name is great in might.6 There is none like unto thee, Jehovah; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.
Who would not fear You, O King of the nations? Indeed it is Your due! For among all the wise men of the nations And in all their kingdoms, There is none like You.7 Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.7 Everyone fears you, O King of the Nations. This is what you deserve. No one is like you among all the wise people in the nations or in all their kingdoms.7 Who should not fear you, King of the nations? For it appertains to you; because among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royal estate, there is none like you.7 Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? For to thee doth it appertain; for among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.
But they are altogether stupid and foolish In their discipline of delusion-- their idol is wood!8 But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.8 They are complete idiots. They learn nonsense from wooden idols.8 But they are together brutish and foolish: the instruction of idols! it is but a stock.8 But they are one and all senseless and foolish; the teaching of vanities is a stock.
Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish, And gold from Uphaz, The work of a craftsman and of the hands of a goldsmith; Violet and purple are their clothing; They are all the work of skilled men.9 Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.9 Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. Craftsmen and goldsmiths shape these metals. The clothing for the idols is blue and purple, all made by skilled workers.9 There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the artificer and of the hands of the goldsmith; blue and purple for their clothing; they are all the work of skillful men.9 Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the artizan and of the hands of the founder; blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of skilful men.
But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King. At His wrath the earth quakes, And the nations cannot endure His indignation.10 But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.10 But the LORD is the only God. He is the living God and eternal king. The earth trembles when he is angry. The nations can't endure his fury.10 But Yahweh is the true God; he is the living God, and an everlasting King: at his wrath the earth trembles, and the nations are not able to withstand his indignation.10 But Jehovah Elohim is truth; he is the living God, and the King of eternity. At his wrath the earth trembleth, and the nations cannot abide his indignation.

Thus you shall say to them, "The gods that did not make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under the heavens."11 Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.11 Tell them this: These gods will disappear from the earth and from under heaven because they didn't make heaven and earth.11 You shall say this to them: The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, these shall perish from the earth, and from under the heavens.11 Thus shall ye say unto them: The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, these shall perish from the earth, and from under the heavens.
It is He who made the earth by His power, Who established the world by His wisdom; And by His understanding He has stretched out the heavens.12 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.12 The LORD made the earth by his power. He set up the world by his skill. He stretched out the world by his understanding.12 He has made the earth by his power, he has established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding has he stretched out the heavens:12 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his understanding.
When He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, And He causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain, And brings out the wind from His storehouses.13 When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.13 He speaks, and the water in the sky produces a storm. He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning flash with the rain. He brings wind out of his storehouses.13 when he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he makes lightnings for the rain, and brings forth the wind out of his treasuries.13 When he uttereth his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the end of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasuries.
Every man is stupid, devoid of knowledge; Every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols; For his molten images are deceitful, And there is no breath in them.14 Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.14 Everyone is stupid and ignorant. Metalsmiths are put to shame by their idols. Their statues are false [gods]. They can't breathe.14 Every man is become brutish [and is] without knowledge; every goldsmith is disappointed by his engraved image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.14 Every man is become brutish, bereft of knowledge; every founder is put to shame by the graven image, for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
They are worthless, a work of mockery; In the time of their punishment they will perish.15 They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.15 They are worthless jokes. When they are punished, they disappear.15 They are vanity, a work of delusion: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.15 They are vanity, a work of delusion: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
The portion of Jacob is not like these; For the Maker of all is He, And Israel is the tribe of His inheritance; The LORD of hosts is His name.16 The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hosts is his name.16 Jacob's God isn't like them. He made everything, and Israel is the tribe that belongs to him. His name is the LORD of Armies.16 The portion of Jacob is not like these; for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance: Yahweh of Armies is his name.16 The portion of Jacob is not like them; for it is he that hath formed all things, and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: Jehovah of hosts is his name.
Pick up your bundle from the ground, You who dwell under siege!17 Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.17 Pick up your bags. You are being blockaded.17 Gather up your wares out of the land, you who live under siege.17 Gather up thy baggage out of the land, O inhabitress of the fortress.
For thus says the LORD, "Behold, I am slinging out the inhabitants of the land At this time, And will cause them distress, That they may be found."18 For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so.18 This is what the LORD says: I am going to throw out those who live in the land at this time and cause trouble for them so that they will feel it.18 For thus says Yahweh, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and will distress them, that they may feel [it].18 For thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I will this time sling out the inhabitants of the land, and will distress them, that they may be found.
Woe is me, because of my injury! My wound is incurable. But I said, "Truly this is a sickness, And I must bear it."19 Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous; but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it.19 Oh, I'm wounded! My wound is serious. Then I thought that this is my punishment, and I will bear it.19 Woe is me because of my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is [my] grief, and I must bear it.19 Woe is me, for my wound! My stroke is hard to heal, and I had said, Yea, this is my grief, and I will bear it.
My tent is destroyed, And all my ropes are broken; My sons have gone from me and are no more. There is no one to stretch out my tent again Or to set up my curtains.20 My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.20 My tent is destroyed, and all my ropes are broken. My children have left me and have disappeared. There's no one to set up my tent again or put up my tent curtains.20 My tent is destroyed, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth from me, and they are no more: there is none to spread my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.20 My tent is despoiled, and all my cords are broken; my children are gone forth from me, and they are not; there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
For the shepherds have become stupid And have not sought the LORD; Therefore they have not prospered, And all their flock is scattered.21 For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.21 The shepherds are foolish. They don't look to the LORD for help. That is why they won't succeed, and all their flocks will be scattered.21 For the shepherds are become brutish, and have not inquired of Yahweh: therefore they have not prospered, and all their flocks are scattered.21 For the shepherds are become brutish, and have not sought Jehovah; therefore have they not acted wisely, and all their flock is scattered.
The sound of a report! Behold, it comes-- A great commotion out of the land of the north-- To make the cities of Judah A desolation, a haunt of jackals.22 Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons.22 The report has arrived. A tremendous uproar is coming from the land of the north. Its army will destroy Judah's cities and make them homes for jackals.22 The voice of news, behold, it comes, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a dwelling place of jackals.22 The voice of a rumour! Behold, it cometh, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a dwelling-place of jackals.
I know, O LORD, that a man's way is not in himself, Nor is it in a man who walks to direct his steps.23 O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.23 O LORD, I know that the way humans act is not under their control. Humans do not direct their steps as they walk.23 Yahweh, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.23 I know, Jehovah, that the way of man is not his own; it is not in a man that walketh to direct his steps.
Correct me, O LORD, but with justice; Not with Your anger, or You will bring me to nothing.24 O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.24 Correct me, O LORD, but please be fair. Don't correct me when you're angry. Otherwise, you'll reduce me to nothing.24 Yahweh, correct me, but in measure: not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing.24 Jehovah, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.
Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not know You And on the families that do not call Your name; For they have devoured Jacob; They have devoured him and consumed him And have laid waste his habitation.25 Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate.25 Pour out your fury on the nations who don't know you and on people who don't worship you. They have devoured the descendants of Jacob. They have devoured them completely. They have destroyed their homes.25 Pour out your wrath on the nations that don't know you, and on the families that don't call on your name: for they have devoured Jacob, yes, they have devoured him and consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation.25 Pour out thy fury upon the nations that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name; for they have eaten up Jacob, yea, they have eaten him up and consumed him, and have laid waste his dwelling-place.
