Now the word of the LORD came to me saying,1 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,1 The LORD spoke his word to me,1 The word of Yahweh came to me, saying,1 And the word of Jehovah came to me, saying,
"Go and proclaim in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, 'Thus says the LORD, "I remember concerning you the devotion of your youth, The love of your betrothals, Your following after Me in the wilderness, Through a land not sown.2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.2 "Go and announce to Jerusalem, 'This is what the LORD says: I remember the unfailing loyalty of your youth, the love you had for me as a bride. I remember how you followed me into the desert, into a land that couldn't be farmed.2 "Go, and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, 'Thus says Yahweh, "I remember for you the kindness of your youth, the love of your weddings; how you went after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith Jehovah: I remember for thee the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.
"Israel was holy to the LORD, The first of His harvest. All who ate of it became guilty; Evil came upon them," declares the LORD.'"3 Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.3 Israel was set apart for the LORD. It was the best part of the harvest. All who devoured it became guilty, and disaster struck them,' " declares the LORD.3 Israel [was] holiness to Yahweh, the first fruits of his increase. All who devour him shall be held guilty. Evil shall come on them,"' says Yahweh."3 Israel was holiness unto Jehovah, the first-fruits of his increase: all that devour him are guilty; evil shall come upon them, saith Jehovah.
Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel.4 Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:4 Listen to the word of the LORD, descendants of Jacob, all the families in the nation of Israel.4 Hear the word of Yahweh, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel!4 Hear the word of Jehovah, house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel.
Thus says the LORD, "What injustice did your fathers find in Me, That they went far from Me And walked after emptiness and became empty?5 Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?5 This is what the LORD says: What did your ancestors find wrong with me that they went so far away from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves.5 Thus says Yahweh, "What unrighteousness have your fathers found in me, that they have gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?5 Thus saith Jehovah: What injustice have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and become vain?

"They did not say, 'Where is the LORD Who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, Who led us through the wilderness, Through a land of deserts and of pits, Through a land of drought and of deep darkness, Through a land that no one crossed And where no man dwelt?'6 Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?6 They didn't ask, "Where is the LORD, who brought us from Egypt? He led us through the desert, through a wasteland and its pits, a land of drought and the shadow of death. No one lives there or travels there."6 Neither did they say, 'Where is Yahweh who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that none passed through, and where no man lived?'6 And they said not, Where is Jehovah, that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and of pits, in a land of drought and of the shadow of death, in a land that no one passeth through, and where no man dwelleth?
"I brought you into the fruitful land To eat its fruit and its good things. But you came and defiled My land, And My inheritance you made an abomination.7 And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.7 I brought them into a fertile land to eat its fruit and its produce. They came and made my land unclean. They made my property disgusting. 7 I brought you into a plentiful land, to eat its fruit and its goodness; but when you entered, you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination.7 And I brought you into a fruitful land, to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof; and ye entered and defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination.
"The priests did not say, 'Where is the LORD?' And those who handle the law did not know Me; The rulers also transgressed against Me, And the prophets prophesied by Baal And walked after things that did not profit.8 The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.8 The priests didn't ask, "Where is the LORD?" Those who deal with my teachings didn't know me. The rulers rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied in the name of Baal and followed statues that couldn't help them.8 The priests didn't say, 'Where is Yahweh?' and those who handle the law didn't know me. The rulers also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.8 The priests said not, Where is Jehovah? and they that handled the law knew me not; and the shepherds transgressed against me; and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.
"Therefore I will yet contend with you," declares the LORD, "And with your sons' sons I will contend.9 Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children's children will I plead.9 "That is why I am bringing charges against you," declares the LORD, "and I am bringing charges against your grandchildren.9 "Therefore I will yet contend with you," says Yahweh, "and I will contend with your children's children.9 Therefore will I yet plead with you, saith Jehovah, and with your children's children will I plead.
"For cross to the coastlands of Kittim and see, And send to Kedar and observe closely And see if there has been such a thing as this!10 For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.10 Go over to the coasts of Cyprus, and see. Send [someone] to Kedar, and observe closely. See if there has ever been anything like this.10 For pass over to the islands of Kittim, and see; and send to Kedar, and consider diligently; and see if there has been such a thing.10 For pass over to the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there have been such a thing.

"Has a nation changed gods When they were not gods? But My people have changed their glory For that which does not profit.11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.11 Has any nation ever exchanged gods? (Their gods aren't really gods.) Yet, my people have exchanged their Glory for something that doesn't help them.11 Has a nation changed [its] gods, which really are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.11 Hath a nation changed its gods? and they are no gods; but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.
"Be appalled, O heavens, at this, And shudder, be very desolate," declares the LORD.12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD.12 Be horrified over this, heaven. Be terribly afraid," declares the LORD.12 "Be astonished, you heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid. Be very desolate," says Yahweh.12 Be astonished, ye heavens, at this, and shudder; be amazed very much, saith Jehovah.
"For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, The fountain of living waters, To hew for themselves cisterns, Broken cisterns That can hold no water.13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.13 "My people have done two things wrong. They have abandoned me, the fountain of life-giving water. They have also dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that can't hold water.13 "For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the spring of living waters, and cut them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.13 For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, to hew them out cisterns, broken cisterns that hold no water.
"Is Israel a slave? Or is he a homeborn servant? Why has he become a prey?14 Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled?14 "Are the people of Israel slaves? Were they born into slavery? Why, then, have they become someone's property?14 Is Israel a servant? Is he a native-born [slave]? Why has he become a prey?14 Is Israel a bondman? Is he a home-born slave? Why is he become a spoil?
"The young lions have roared at him, They have roared loudly. And they have made his land a waste; His cities have been destroyed, without inhabitant.15 The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.15 Young lions have roared very loudly at them. Young lions have turned the land into a wasteland. The cities have been burned down, and everyone has left.15 The young lions have roared at him, and yelled. They have made his land waste. His cities are burned up, without inhabitant.15 The young lions roared against him, they gave forth their voice, and they made his land desolate: his cities are burned, without inhabitant.

"Also the men of Memphis and Tahpanhes Have shaved the crown of your head.16 Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head.16 People from Noph and Tahpanhes have cracked your skulls, Israel.16 The children also of Memphis and Tahpanhes have broken the crown of your head.16 Even the children of Noph and Tahapanes have fed on the crown of thy head.
"Have you not done this to yourself By your forsaking the LORD your God When He led you in the way?17 Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way?17 You have brought this on yourself by abandoning the LORD your God when he led you on his way.17 "Haven't you procured this to yourself, in that you have forsaken Yahweh your God, when he led you by the way?17 Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken Jehovah thy God, at the time he was leading thee in the way?
"But now what are you doing on the road to Egypt, To drink the waters of the Nile? Or what are you doing on the road to Assyria, To drink the waters of the Euphrates?18 And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river?18 You won't gain anything by going to Egypt to drink water from the Nile River. You won't gain anything by going to Assyria to drink water from the Euphrates River.18 Now what have you to do in the way to Egypt, to drink the waters of the Shihor? Or what have you to do in the way to Assyria, to drink the waters of the River?18 And now, what hast thou to do with the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Shihor? And what hast thou to do with the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the River?
"Your own wickedness will correct you, And your apostasies will reprove you; Know therefore and see that it is evil and bitter For you to forsake the LORD your God, And the dread of Me is not in you," declares the Lord GOD of hosts.19 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.19 Your own wickedness will correct you, and your unfaithful ways will punish you. You should know and see how evil and bitter it is for you if you abandon the LORD your God and do not fear me," declares the Almighty LORD of Armies.19 "Your own wickedness shall correct you, and your backsliding shall reprove you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and a bitter, that you have forsaken Yahweh your God, and that my fear is not in you," says the Lord, Yahweh of Armies.19 Thine own wickedness chastiseth thee, and thy backslidings reprove thee: know then and see that it is an evil thing and bitter that thou hast forsaken Jehovah thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.
"For long ago I broke your yoke And tore off your bonds; But you said, 'I will not serve!' For on every high hill And under every green tree You have lain down as a harlot.20 For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot.20 "Long ago you broke off your yoke, tore off your chains, and said that you wouldn't be a slave. You lay down and acted like a prostitute on every high hill and under every large tree. 20 "For of old time I have broken your yoke, and burst your bonds; and you said, 'I will not serve;' for on every high hill and under every green tree you bowed yourself, playing the prostitute.20 For of old thou hast broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not serve. For upon every high hill, and under every green tree, thou bowest down, playing the harlot.

"Yet I planted you a choice vine, A completely faithful seed. How then have you turned yourself before Me Into the degenerate shoots of a foreign vine?21 Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?21 I planted you like a choice grapevine from the very best seed. Now you have turned against me and have become a wild vine.21 Yet I had planted you a noble vine, wholly a right seed. How then have you turned into the degenerate branches of a foreign vine to me?21 And I, I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed; how then art thou turned into the degenerate shoots of a strange vine unto me?
"Although you wash yourself with lye And use much soap, The stain of your iniquity is before Me," declares the Lord GOD.22 For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.22 Even if you wash with detergent and use a lot of soap, I would still see the stains from your wickedness," declares the Almighty LORD.22 For though you wash yourself with lye, and use much soap, yet your iniquity is marked before me," says the Lord Yahweh.22 For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much potash, thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord Jehovah.
"How can you say, 'I am not defiled, I have not gone after the Baals '? Look at your way in the valley! Know what you have done! You are a swift young camel entangling her ways,23 How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways;23 "How can you say that you haven't dishonored yourselves and haven't followed other gods-the Baals? Look how you've behaved in the valley. Acknowledge what you've done. You are like a young camel that swiftly runs here and there.23 "How can you say, 'I am not defiled. I have not gone after the Baals'? See your way in the valley. Know what you have done. [You are] a swift dromedary traversing her ways;23 How sayest thou, I am not defiled, I have not gone after the Baals? See thy way in the valley, acknowledge what thou hast done a swift dromedary traversing her ways!
A wild donkey accustomed to the wilderness, That sniffs the wind in her passion. In the time of her heat who can turn her away? All who seek her will not become weary; In her month they will find her.24 A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.24 You are like a wild donkey that is used to the desert, sniffing the wind while in heat. All who look for you won't get tired. They will find you during your monthly period.24 a wild donkey used to the wilderness, that snuffs up the wind in her desire. When she is in heat, who can turn her away? All those who seek her will not weary themselves. In her month, they will find her.24 a wild ass, used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind in her desire! In her ardour, who shall turn her away? All they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.
"Keep your feet from being unshod And your throat from thirst; But you said, 'It is hopeless! No! For I have loved strangers, And after them I will walk.'25 Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.25 Don't run until your feet are bare and your throats are dry. But you say that it's useless. You love foreign gods and follow them.25 "Withhold your foot from being unshod, and your throat from thirst. But you said, 'It is in vain. No, for I have loved strangers, and I will go after them.'25 Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst. But thou saidst, There is no hope; no, for I love strangers, and after them will I go.

"As the thief is shamed when he is discovered, So the house of Israel is shamed; They, their kings, their princes And their priests and their prophets,26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets.26 "As a thief feels ashamed when he's caught, so the nation of Israel will feel ashamed. Their kings, princes, priests, and prophets will also feel ashamed.26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets;26 As a thief is ashamed when he is found, so shall the house of Israel be ashamed they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets --
Who say to a tree, 'You are my father,' And to a stone, 'You gave me birth.' For they have turned their back to Me, And not their face; But in the time of their trouble they will say, 'Arise and save us.'27 Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.27 You call wood your father. You call stone your mother. You've turned your backs, not your faces, to me. But when you're in trouble, you ask me to come and rescue you.27 who tell wood, 'You are my father;' and a stone, 'You have brought me out:' for they have turned their back to me, and not their face; but in the time of their trouble they will say, 'Arise, and save us.'27 saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth; for they have turned the back unto me, and not the face; and in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us!
"But where are your gods Which you made for yourself? Let them arise, if they can save you In the time of your trouble; For according to the number of your cities Are your gods, O Judah.28 But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.28 Where are the gods that you made for yourselves? Let them come and rescue you when you're in trouble. You have as many gods as you have cities, Judah!28 "But where are your gods that you have made for yourselves? Let them arise, if they can save you in the time of your trouble: for according to the number of your cities are your gods, Judah.28 Where then are thy gods that thou hast made for thyself? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for as the number of thy cities, are thy gods, O Judah.
"Why do you contend with Me? You have all transgressed against Me," declares the LORD.29 Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD.29 "Why do you complain about me? All of you have rebelled against me," declares the LORD.29 "Why will you contend with me? You all have transgressed against me," says Yahweh.29 Wherefore would ye contend with me? Ye all have transgressed against me, saith Jehovah.
"In vain I have struck your sons; They accepted no chastening. Your sword has devoured your prophets Like a destroying lion.30 In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.30 "I have punished your children without results. They didn't respond to correction. You killed my prophets like a raging lion.30 "I have struck your children in vain. They received no correction. Your own sword has devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.30 In vain have I smitten your children: they received no correction. Your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

"O generation, heed the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness to Israel, Or a land of thick darkness? Why do My people say, 'We are free to roam; We will no longer come to You'?31 O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?31 "Consider the word of the LORD, people of this generation. Haven't I been a desert, a land of thick darkness, for Israel? Why do my people say that they are free to wander around and no longer come to me?31 Generation, consider the word of Yahweh. Have I been a wilderness to Israel? Or a land of thick darkness? Why do my people say, 'We have broken loose. We will come to you no more?'31 O generation, mark ye the word of Jehovah. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel, or a land of thick darkness? Wherefore say my people, We have dominion; we will come no more unto thee?
"Can a virgin forget her ornaments, Or a bride her attire? Yet My people have forgotten Me Days without number.32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.32 A young woman can't forget her jewelry or a bride her veils. Yet, my people have forgotten me for countless days.32 "Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me for days without number.32 Doth a virgin forget her ornaments, a bride her attire? But my people have forgotten me days without number.
"How well you prepare your way To seek love! Therefore even the wicked women You have taught your ways.33 Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways.33 You carefully planned ways to look for love. You taught your ways to wicked women.33 How well you prepare your way to seek love! Therefore you have taught even the wicked women your ways.33 How dost thou trim thy way to seek love! Therefore hast thou also accustomed thy ways to wickedness.
"Also on your skirts is found The lifeblood of the innocent poor; You did not find them breaking in. But in spite of all these things,34 Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.34 You have the blood from poor and innocent people on your clothes. You didn't kill them for breaking in to your home.34 Also the blood of the souls of the innocent poor is found in your skirts. You did not find them breaking in; but it is because of all these things.34 Yea, in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the innocent poor, whom thou didst not encounter breaking in, but it is found upon all these.
Yet you said, 'I am innocent; Surely His anger is turned away from me.' Behold, I will enter into judgment with you Because you say, 'I have not sinned.'35 Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.35 In spite of all this you say, 'I'm innocent. God will turn his anger from me, because I haven't sinned.'35 "Yet you said, 'I am innocent. Surely his anger has turned away from me.' "Behold, I will judge you, because you say, 'I have not sinned.'35 And thou sayest, Indeed I am innocent; his anger will turn from me. Behold, I will enter into judgment with thee because thou sayest, I have not sinned.

"Why do you go around so much Changing your way? Also, you will be put to shame by Egypt As you were put to shame by Assyria.36 Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.36 You change your mind so easily. You will be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria.36 Why do you go about so much to change your way? You will be ashamed of Egypt also, as you were ashamed of Assyria.36 Why dost thou gad about so much, and change thy way? Thou shalt also be brought to shame by Egypt, as thou wast brought to shame by Assyria.
"From this place also you will go out With your hands on your head; For the LORD has rejected those in whom you trust, And you will not prosper with them."37 Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.37 You will also leave this place with your hands over your head, because the LORD has rejected those you trust. You will not be helped by them."37 From there also you shall go forth, with your hands on your head; for Yahweh has rejected those in whom you trust, and you shall not prosper with them.37 Thou shalt indeed go forth from her with thy hands upon thy head; for Jehovah hath rejected those thou confidest in, and thou shalt not prosper by them.
