Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, "None of us shall give his daughter to Benjamin in marriage."1 Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.1 The men of Israel had taken this oath in Mizpah: "None of us will ever let our daughters marry anyone from Benjamin."1 Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, "There shall not any of us give his daughter to Benjamin as wife."1 Now the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah, "No one of us shall give his daughter in marriage to Benjamin."
So the people came to Bethel and sat there before God until evening, and lifted up their voices and wept bitterly.2 And the people came to the house of God, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore;2 The people went to Bethel and sat there in the presence of God until evening. They cried very loudly,2 The people came to Bethel, and sat there until evening before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept severely.2 And the people came to Bethel, and sat there till evening before God, and they lifted up their voices and wept bitterly.
They said, "Why, O LORD, God of Israel, has this come about in Israel, so that one tribe should be missing today in Israel?"3 And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel?3 "LORD God of Israel, why has this happened among us? Why should one tribe be missing today in Israel?"3 They said, "Yahweh, the God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that there should be today one tribe lacking in Israel?"3 And they said, "O LORD, the God of Israel, why has this come to pass in Israel, that there should be today one tribe lacking in Israel?"
It came about the next day that the people arose early and built an altar there and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.4 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.4 The next day the people got up early. They built an altar there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings.4 It happened on the next day that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.4 And on the morrow the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.
Then the sons of Israel said, "Who is there among all the tribes of Israel who did not come up in the assembly to the LORD?" For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the LORD at Mizpah, saying, "He shall surely be put to death."5 And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.5 The people asked, "Is there any family from Israel that did not take part in the assembly in the presence of the LORD?" They had taken a solemn oath that whoever had not come into the presence of the LORD at Mizpah must be put to death.5 The children of Israel said, "Who is there among all the tribes of Israel who didn't come up in the assembly to Yahweh?" For they had made a great oath concerning him who didn't come up to Yahweh to Mizpah, saying, "He shall surely be put to death."5 And the people of Israel said, "Which of all the tribes of Israel did not come up in the assembly to the LORD?" For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the LORD to Mizpah, saying, "He shall be put to death."

And the sons of Israel were sorry for their brother Benjamin and said, "One tribe is cut off from Israel today.6 And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.6 The people of Israel felt sorry for their close relatives, the men of Benjamin. They said, "Today one tribe has been excluded from Israel.6 The children of Israel grieved for Benjamin their brother, and said, "There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.6 And the people of Israel had compassion for Benjamin their brother, and said, "One tribe is cut off from Israel this day.
"What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the LORD not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?"7 How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?7 What will we do to provide wives for the men who are left? We swore to the LORD that we would not let any of our daughters marry them."7 How shall we provide wives for those who remain, since we have sworn by Yahweh that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?"7 What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them any of our daughters for wives?"

And they said, "What one is there of the tribes of Israel who did not come up to the LORD at Mizpah?" And behold, no one had come to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.8 And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabeshgilead to the assembly.8 Then they asked, "Is there any family from Israel that did not come into the presence of the LORD at Mizpah?" No one from Jabesh Gilead had come to the assembly in the camp.8 They said, "What one is there of the tribes of Israel who didn't come up to Yahweh to Mizpah?" Behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh Gilead to the assembly.8 And they said, "What one is there of the tribes of Israel that did not come up to the LORD to Mizpah?" And behold, no one had come to the camp from Ja'besh-gil'ead, to the assembly.
For when the people were numbered, behold, not one of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead was there.9 For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead there.9 So they questioned the people, and there was no one there from Jabesh Gilead.9 For when the people were numbered, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead there.9 For when the people were mustered, behold, not one of the inhabitants of Ja'besh-gil'ead was there.
And the congregation sent 12,000 of the valiant warriors there, and commanded them, saying, "Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones.10 And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.10 The congregation sent 12,000 soldiers. They ordered them, "Go and kill the people of Jabesh Gilead, including the women and children.10 The congregation sent there twelve thousand men of the most valiant, and commanded them, saying, "Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones.10 So the congregation sent thither twelve thousand of their bravest men, and commanded them, "Go and smite the inhabitants of Ja'besh-gil'ead with the edge of the sword; also the women and the little ones.

"This is the thing that you shall do: you shall utterly destroy every man and every woman who has lain with a man."11 And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.11 These are your directions: Claim every female who has gone to bed with a man, and claim every male. Claim them for the LORD by destroying them."11 This is the thing that you shall do: you shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman who has lain with a man."11 This is what you shall do; every male and every woman that has lain with a male you shall utterly destroy."
And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead 400 young virgins who had not known a man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.12 Among the people of Jabesh Gilead they found 400 unmarried women who had never gone to bed with a man. They brought them to the camp at Shiloh in Canaan.12 They found among the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead four hundred young virgins, who had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.12 And they found among the inhabitants of Ja'besh-gil'ead four hundred young virgins who had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
Then the whole congregation sent word and spoke to the sons of Benjamin who were at the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them.13 And the whole congregation sent some to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them.13 Then the whole congregation sent messengers to the men of Benjamin at Rimmon Rock and offered them peace.13 The whole congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin who were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them.13 Then the whole congregation sent word to the Benjaminites who were at the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them.
Benjamin returned at that time, and they gave them the women whom they had kept alive from the women of Jabesh-gilead; yet they were not enough for them.14 And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabeshgilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.14 So the men of Benjamin came back at that time. These men were given the women from Jabesh Gilead who had been kept alive. However, the congregation had not found enough women for all of them.14 Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh Gilead: and yet so they weren't enough for them.14 And Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Ja'besh-gil'ead; but they did not suffice for them.
And the people were sorry for Benjamin because the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.15 And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.15 The congregation felt sorry for the people of Benjamin because the LORD had broken the unity of the tribes of Israel.15 The people grieved for Benjamin, because that Yahweh had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.15 And the people had compassion on Benjamin because the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

Then the elders of the congregation said, "What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?"16 Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?16 The leaders of the congregation asked, "What should we do to provide wives for the men who are left, since the women in Benjamin have been killed?"16 Then the elders of the congregation said, "How shall we provide wives for those who remain, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?"16 Then the elders of the congregation said, "What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?"
They said, "There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, so that a tribe will not be blotted out from Israel.17 And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.17 Some said, "Benjamin's men who survived must be allowed to have families. No tribe of Israel should be wiped out.17 They said, "There must be an inheritance for those who are escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe not be blotted out from Israel.17 And they said, "There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, that a tribe be not blotted out from Israel.
"But we cannot give them wives of our daughters." For the sons of Israel had sworn, saying, "Cursed is he who gives a wife to Benjamin."18 Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.18 However, we can't give them any of our daughters as wives. The people of Israel have taken an oath that whoever gives wives to the men of Benjamin is under a curse."18 However we may not give them wives of our daughters, for the children of Israel had sworn, saying, 'Cursed is he who gives a wife to Benjamin.'"18 Yet we cannot give them wives of our daughters." For the people of Israel had sworn, "Cursed be he who gives a wife to Benjamin."
So they said, "Behold, there is a feast of the LORD from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south side of Lebonah."19 Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.19 Others said, "Every year the LORD's festival is held at Shiloh. Shiloh is north of Bethel, east of the highway going from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah."19 They said, "Behold, there is a feast of Yahweh from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah."19 So they said, "Behold, there is the yearly feast of the LORD at Shiloh, which is north of Bethel, on the east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebo'nah."
And they commanded the sons of Benjamin, saying, "Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,20 Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;20 So they told the men of Benjamin, "Hide in the vineyards and20 They commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, "Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,20 And they commanded the Benjaminites, saying, "Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,

and watch; and behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to take part in the dances, then you shall come out of the vineyards and each of you shall catch his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.21 And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.21 watch. When the young women of Shiloh come out to take part in the dances, come out of the vineyards. Each of you catch a woman from Shiloh to be your wife. Then go back to the territory of Benjamin.21 and see, and behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards, and each man catch his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.21 and watch; if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards and seize each man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
"It shall come about, when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, that we shall say to them, 'Give them to us voluntarily, because we did not take for each man of Benjamin a wife in battle, nor did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.'"22 And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favorable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty.22 When their fathers or brothers come to us to complain, we'll tell them, 'Have pity on them, since we didn't provide a wife for each man in the battle. You won't be guilty because you didn't give them the wives yourselves.'"22 It shall be, when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, that we will say to them, 'Grant them graciously to us, because we didn't take for each man his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them, otherwise you would now be guilty.'"22 And when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we will say to them, 'Grant them graciously to us; because we did not take for each man of them his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.'"
The sons of Benjamin did so, and took wives according to their number from those who danced, whom they carried away. And they went and returned to their inheritance and rebuilt the cities and lived in them.23 And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them.23 The men of Benjamin did just that. They captured the number of wives they needed from the women who were dancing and went home. So they rebuilt their cities and lived in them.23 The children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of those who danced, whom they carried off. They went and returned to their inheritance, built the cities, and lived in them.23 And the Benjaminites did so, and took their wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they carried off; then they went and returned to their inheritance, and rebuilt the towns, and dwelt in them.
The sons of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and each one of them went out from there to his inheritance.24 And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.24 At that time the people of Israel left. Each man went to his tribe and family. They all went home.24 The children of Israel departed there at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance.24 And the people of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance.
In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.25 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.25 In those days Israel didn't have a king. Everyone did whatever he considered right.25 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.25 In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes.
