God’s Indictment of His People
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
1 Hear now what the LORD is saying, "Arise, plead your case before the mountains, And let the hills hear your voice.1 Hear ye now what the LORD saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.1 Now listen to what the LORD is saying, "Stand up! Plead your case in front of the mountains, and let the hills listen to your request.1 Listen now to what Yahweh says: "Arise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear what you have to say.1 Hear ye now what Jehovah saith: Arise, contend before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.
2 "Listen, you mountains, to the indictment of the LORD, And you enduring foundations of the earth, Because the LORD has a case against His people; Even with Israel He will dispute.2 Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD's controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel.2 Listen to the LORD's lawsuit, you mountains. Listen, you strong foundations of the earth. The LORD has filed a lawsuit against his people. He is arguing his case against Israel.2 Hear, you mountains, Yahweh's controversy, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for Yahweh has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel.2 Hear, ye mountains, Jehovah's controversy, and ye, unchanging foundations of the earth; for Jehovah hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel.
3 "My people, what have I done to you, And how have I wearied you? Answer Me.3 O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me.3 "My people, what have I done to you? How have I tried your patience? Answer me!3 My people, what have I done to you? How have I burdened you? Answer me!3 O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me.
4 "Indeed, I brought you up from the land of Egypt And ransomed you from the house of slavery, And I sent before you Moses, Aaron and Miriam.4 For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.4 I brought you out of Egypt and freed you from slavery. I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam to lead you.4 For I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage. I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.4 For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of bondage; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
5 "My people, remember now What Balak king of Moab counseled And what Balaam son of Beor answered him, And from Shittim to Gilgal, So that you might know the righteous acts of the LORD."5 O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD.5 My people, remember what King Balak of Moab planned [to do to you] and how Balaam, son of Beor, responded to him. Remember [your journey] from Shittim to Gilgal so that you may know the victories of the LORD." 5 My people, remember now what Balak king of Moab devised, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous acts of Yahweh."5 My people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him, from Shittim unto Gilgal, that ye may know the righteousness of Jehovah.
What God Requires of Man
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
6 With what shall I come to the LORD And bow myself before the God on high? Shall I come to Him with burnt offerings, With yearling calves?6 Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old?6 What should I bring when I come into the LORD's presence, when I bow in front of the God of heaven? Should I bring him year-old calves as burnt offerings?6 How shall I come before Yahweh, and bow myself before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old?6 Wherewith shall I come before Jehovah, bow myself before the high God? Shall I come before him with burnt-offerings, with calves of a year old?
7 Does the LORD take delight in thousands of rams, In ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I present my firstborn for my rebellious acts, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams or with endless streams of olive oil? Should I give him my firstborn child because of my rebellious acts? Should I give him my young child for my sin?7 Will Yahweh be pleased with thousands of rams? With tens of thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my disobedience? The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?7 Will Jehovah take pleasure in thousands of rams, in ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8 He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?8 You mortals, the LORD has told you what is good. This is what the LORD requires from you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to live humbly with your God.8 He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does Yahweh require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?8 He hath shewn thee, O man, what is good: and what doth Jehovah require of thee, but to do justly, and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with thy God?
9 The voice of the LORD will call to the city-- And it is sound wisdom to fear Your name: "Hear, O tribe. Who has appointed its time?9 The LORD's voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.9 The voice of the LORD calls out to the city. (The fear of your name is wisdom.) "Listen, you tribe assembled in the city. 9 Yahweh's voice calls to the city, and wisdom sees your name: "Listen to the rod, and he who appointed it.9 Jehovah's voice crieth unto the city, and wisdom looketh on thy name. Hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.
10 "Is there yet a man in the wicked house, Along with treasures of wickedness And a short measure that is cursed?10 Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is abominable?10 I have cursed all the wicked people who use their money for evil and use inaccurate weights and measures.10 Are there yet treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and a short ephah that is accursed?10 Are there yet treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure which is abominable?
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
11 "Can I justify wicked scales And a bag of deceptive weights?11 Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?11 I cannot tolerate dishonest scales and bags filled with inaccurate weights.11 Shall I be pure with dishonest scales, and with a bag of deceitful weights?11 Shall I be pure with the unjust balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?
12 "For the rich men of the city are full of violence, Her residents speak lies, And their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.12 For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.12 The rich people in the city are violent. Those who live in the city speak lies, and their tongues speak deceitfully.12 Her rich men are full of violence, her inhabitants speak lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their speech.12 For her rich men are full of violence, and her inhabitants speak lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.
13 "So also I will make you sick, striking you down, Desolating you because of your sins.13 Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sins.13 I have begun to strike you with heavy blows and to ruin you because of your sins.13 Therefore I also have struck you with a grievous wound. I have made you desolate because of your sins.13 Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee; I will make thee desolate because of thy sins.
14 "You will eat, but you will not be satisfied, And your vileness will be in your midst. You will try to remove for safekeeping, But you will not preserve anything, And what you do preserve I will give to the sword.14 Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword.14 You will eat, but you won't be full. So you will always be hungry. You will put things away, but you won't save them. Anything you save I will destroy.14 You shall eat, but not be satisfied. Your humiliation will be in your midst. You will store up, but not save; and that which you save I will give up to the sword.14 Thou shalt eat, and not be satisfied, and thine emptiness shall remain in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take away, and not save; and what thou savest will I give up to the sword.
15 "You will sow but you will not reap. You will tread the olive but will not anoint yourself with oil; And the grapes, but you will not drink wine.15 Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine.15 You will plant, but you won't harvest. You will crush olives, but you won't rub the oil on your skin. You will make new wine, but you won't drink it.15 You will sow, but won't reap. You will tread the olives, but won't anoint yourself with oil; and crush grapes, but won't drink the wine.15 Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and new wine, but shalt not drink wine.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
16 "The statutes of Omri And all the works of the house of Ahab are observed; And in their devices you walk. Therefore I will give you up for destruction And your inhabitants for derision, And you will bear the reproach of My people."16 For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.16 You have kept Omri's laws and all the practices of the descendants of Ahab, and you have followed their advice. That is why I will ruin you. Your people will be ridiculed. You will bear the disgrace of my people."16 For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab. You walk in their counsels, that I may make you a ruin, and her inhabitants a hissing; And you will bear the reproach of my people."16 For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab; and ye walk in their counsels: that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof a hissing; and ye shall bear the reproach of my people.
