Parable of the Vine-growers

1 And He began to speak to them in parables: "A man PLANTED A VINEYARD AND PUT A WALL AROUND IT, AND DUG A VAT UNDER THE WINE PRESS AND BUILT A TOWER, and rented it out to vine-growers and went on a journey.1 And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.1 Then, using this illustration, Jesus spoke to them. He said, "A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, made a vat for the winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to vineyard workers and went on a trip.1 He began to speak to them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a pit for the winepress, built a tower, rented it out to a farmer, and went into another country.1 And he began to say to them in parables, A man planted a vineyard, and made a fence round it and dug a wine-vat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and left the country.
2 "At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, in order to receive some of the produce of the vineyard from the vine-growers.2 And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.2 "At the right time he sent a servant to the workers to collect from them a share of the grapes from the vineyard.2 When it was time, he sent a servant to the farmer to get from the farmer his share of the fruit of the vineyard.2 And he sent a bondman to the husbandmen at the season, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.
3 "They took him, and beat him and sent him away empty-handed.3 And they caught him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.3 The workers took the servant, beat him, and sent him back with nothing.3 They took him, beat him, and sent him away empty.3 But they took him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.

6 "He had one more to send, a beloved son; he sent him last of all to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'6 Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son.6 "He had one more person to send. That person was his son, whom he loved. Finally, he sent his son to them. He thought, 'They will respect my son.'6 Therefore still having one, his beloved son, he sent him last to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'6 Having yet therefore one beloved son, he sent also him to them the last, saying, They will have respect for my son.
7 "But those vine-growers said to one another, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!'7 But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be our's.7 "But those workers said to one another, 'This is the heir. Let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'7 But those farmers said among themselves, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'7 But those husbandmen said to one another, This is the heir: come, let us kill him and the inheritance will be ours.

10 "Have you not even read this Scripture: 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone;10 And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:10 Have you never read the Scripture passage: 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.10 Haven't you even read this Scripture: 'The stone which the builders rejected, the same was made the head of the corner.10 Have ye not even read this scripture, The stone which they that builded rejected, this has become the corner-stone:

11 THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD, AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES '?"11 This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?11 The Lord has done this, and it is amazing for us to see'?"11 This was from the Lord, it is marvelous in our eyes'?"11 this is of the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes?
12 And they were seeking to seize Him, and yet they feared the people, for they understood that He spoke the parable against them. And so they left Him and went away.12 And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and went their way.12 They wanted to arrest him but were afraid of the crowd. They knew that he had directed this illustration at them. So they left him alone and went away.12 They tried to seize him, but they feared the multitude; for they perceived that he spoke the parable against them. They left him, and went away.12 And they sought to lay hold of him, and they feared the crowd; for they knew that he had spoken the parable of them. And they left him and went away.
Jesus Answers the Pharisees, Sadducees and Scribes
13 Then they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Him in order to trap Him in a statement.13 And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words.13 The leaders sent some of the Pharisees and some of Herod's followers to Jesus. They wanted to trap him into saying the wrong thing.13 They sent some of the Pharisees and of the Herodians to him, that they might trap him with words.13 And they send to him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, that they might catch him in speaking.
14 They came and said to Him, "Teacher, we know that You are truthful and defer to no one; for You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to pay a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?14 And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?14 When they came to him, they said, "Teacher, we know that you tell the truth. You don't favor individuals because of who they are. Rather, you teach the way of God truthfully. Is it right to pay taxes to the emperor or not? Should we pay taxes or not?"14 When they had come, they asked him, "Teacher, we know that you are honest, and don't defer to anyone; for you aren't partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?14 And they come and say to him, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and carest not for any one; for thou regardest not men's person, but teachest the way of God with truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?
15 "Shall we pay or shall we not pay?" But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, "Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius to look at."15 Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it.15 Jesus recognized their hypocrisy, so he asked them, "Why do you test me? Bring me a coin so that I can look at it."15 Shall we give, or shall we not give?" But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, "Why do you test me? Bring me a denarius, that I may see it."15 Should we give, or should we not give? But he knowing their hypocrisy said unto them, Why tempt ye me? Bring me a denarius that I may see it.

16 They brought one. And He said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" And they said to Him, "Caesar's."16 And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar's.16 They brought a coin. He said to them, "Whose face and name is this?" 17 And Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they marvelled at him.17 Jesus said to them, "Give the emperor what belongs to the emperor, and give God what belongs to God." 18 Some Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection) came to Jesus, and began questioning Him, saying,18 Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,18 Some Sadducees, who say that people will never come back to life, came to Jesus. 19 "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that IF A MAN'S BROTHER DIES and leaves behind a wife AND LEAVES NO CHILD, HIS BROTHER SHOULD MARRY THE WIFE AND RAISE UP CHILDREN TO HIS BROTHER.19 Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.19 "Teacher, Moses wrote for us, 'If a man dies and leaves a wife but no child, his brother should marry his widow and have children for his brother.'19 "Teacher, Moses wrote to us, 'If a man's brother dies, and leaves a wife behind him, and leaves no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up offspring for his brother.'19 Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if any one's brother die, and leave a wife behind, and leave no children, that his brother shall take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother.
20 "There were seven brothers; and the first took a wife, and died leaving no children.20 Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed.20 There were seven brothers. 25 "For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.25 For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.25 When the dead come back to life, they don't marry. 26 "But regarding the fact that the dead rise again, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him, saying, 'I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, and the God of Jacob '?26 And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?26 Haven't you read in the book of Moses that the dead come back to life? It's in the passage about the bush, where God said, 'I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.'26 But about the dead, that they are raised; haven't you read in the book of Moses, about the Bush, how God spoke to him, saying, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?26 But concerning the dead that they rise, have ye not read in the book of Moses, in the section of the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?
27 "He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; you are greatly mistaken."27 He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.27 He's not the God of the dead but of the living. 28 One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, "What commandment is the foremost of all?"28 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?28 One of the scribes went to Jesus during the argument with the Sadducees. He saw how well Jesus answered them, so he asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of them all?"28 One of the scribes came, and heard them questioning together. Knowing that he had answered them well, asked him, "Which commandment is the greatest of all?"28 And one of the scribes who had come up, and had heard them reasoning together, perceiving that he had answered them well, demanded of him, Which is the first commandment of all?
29 Jesus answered, "The foremost is, 'HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD;29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:29 Jesus answered, "The most important is, 'Listen, Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord.29 Jesus answered, "The greatest is, 'Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one:29 And Jesus answered him, The first commandment of all is, Hear, Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord;

31 "The second is this, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is no other commandment greater than these."31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.31 The second most important commandment is this: 'Love your neighbor as you love yourself.' 32 The scribe said to Him, "Right, Teacher; You have truly stated that HE IS ONE, AND THERE IS NO ONE ELSE BESIDES HIM;32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:32 The scribe said to Jesus, "Teacher, that was well said! You've told the truth that there is only one God and no other besides him!32 The scribe said to him, "Truly, teacher, you have said well that he is one, and there is none other but he,32 And the scribe said to him, Right, teacher; thou hast spoken according to the truth. For he is one, and there is none other besides him;
33 AND TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL THE HEART AND WITH ALL THE UNDERSTANDING AND WITH ALL THE STRENGTH, AND TO LOVE ONE'S NEIGHBOR AS HIMSELF, is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as you love yourself is more important than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices."33 and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."33 and to love him with all the heart, and with all the intelligence, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbour as one's self, is more than all the burnt-offerings and sacrifices.
34 When Jesus saw that he had answered intelligently, He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." After that, no one would venture to ask Him any more questions.34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.34 When Jesus heard how wisely the man answered, he told the man, "You're not too far from the kingdom of God." After that, no one dared to ask him another question.34 When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the Kingdom of God." No one dared ask him any question after that.34 And Jesus, seeing that he had answered intelligently, said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no one dared question him any more.
35 And Jesus began to say, as He taught in the temple, "How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?35 And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the son of David?35 While Jesus was teaching in the temple courtyard, he asked, "How can the scribes say that the Messiah is David's son?35 Jesus responded, as he taught in the temple, "How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?35 And Jesus answering said as he was teaching in the temple, How do the scribes say that the Christ is son of David?

36 "David himself said in the Holy Spirit, 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET."'36 For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.36 David, guided by the Holy Spirit, said, 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Take the highest position in heaven until I put your enemies under your control."'36 For David himself said in the Holy Spirit, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet."'36 for David himself said speaking in the Holy Spirit, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand until I put thine enemies as footstool of thy feet.
37 "David himself calls Him 'Lord'; so in what sense is He his son?" And the large crowd enjoyed listening to Him.37 David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly.37 David calls him Lord. So how can he be his son?" They like to walk around in long robes, to be greeted in the marketplaces,38 In his teaching he said to them, "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk in long robes, and to get greetings in the marketplaces,38 And he said to them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk about in long robes, and salutations in the marketplaces,
39 and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets,39 And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts:39 and to have the front seats in synagogues and the places of honor at dinners.39 and the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts:39 and first seats in the synagogues, and first places at suppers;
40 who devour widows' houses, and for appearance's sake offer long prayers; these will receive greater condemnation."40 Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.40 They rob widows by taking their houses and then say long prayers to make themselves look good. The Widow’s Mite

41 And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums.41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.41 As Jesus sat facing the temple offering box, he watched how [much] money people put into it. Many rich people put in large amounts.41 Jesus sat down opposite the treasury, and saw how the multitude cast money into the treasury. 43 Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury;43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:43 He called his disciples and said to them, "I can guarantee this truth: This poor widow has given more than all the others.43 He called his disciples to himself, and said to them, "Most certainly I tell you, this poor widow gave more than all those who are giving into the treasury,43 And having called his disciples to him he said to them, Verily I say unto you, This poor widow has cast in more than all who have cast into the treasury:
44 for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on."44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.44 All of them have given what they could spare.
