Giving to the Poor and Prayer
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
1 "Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.1 "Be careful not to do your good works in public in order to attract attention. If you do, your Father in heaven will not reward you.1 "Be careful that you don't do your charitable giving before men, to be seen by them, or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.1 Take heed not to do your alms before men to be seen of them, otherwise ye have no reward with your Father who is in the heavens.
2 "So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.2 So when you give to the poor, don't announce it with trumpet fanfare. This is what hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets in order to be praised by people. I can guarantee this truth: That will be their only reward.2 Therefore when you do merciful deeds, don't sound a trumpet before yourself, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may get glory from men. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward.2 When therefore thou doest alms, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory from men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
3 "But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:3 When you give to the poor, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.3 But when you do merciful deeds, don't let your left hand know what your right hand does,3 But thou, when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand does;
4 so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.4 Give your contributions privately. Your Father sees what you do in private. He will reward you.4 so that your merciful deeds may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.4 so that thine alms may be in secret, and thy Father who sees in secret will render it to thee.
5 "When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.5 "When you pray, don't be like hypocrites. They like to stand in synagogues and on street corners to pray so that everyone can see them. I can guarantee this truth: That will be their only reward.5 "When you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Most certainly, I tell you, they have received their reward.5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets so that they should appear to men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
6 "But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.6 When you pray, go to your room and close the door. Pray privately to your Father who is with you. Your Father sees what you do in private. He will reward you.6 But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who sees in secret will render it to thee.
7 "And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words.7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.7 "When you pray, don't ramble like heathens who think they'll be heard if they talk a lot.7 In praying, don't use vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking.7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as those who are of the nations: for they think they shall be heard through their much speaking.
8 "So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.8 Don't be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.8 Therefore don't be like them, for your Father knows what things you need, before you ask him.8 Be not ye therefore like them, for your Father knows of what things ye have need before ye beg anything of him.
9 "Pray, then, in this way: 'Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.9 "This is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, let your name be kept holy.9 Pray like this: 'Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.9 Thus therefore pray ye: Our Father who art in the heavens, let thy name be sanctified,
10 'Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.10 Let your kingdom come. Let your will be done on earth as it is done in heaven.10 Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.10 let thy kingdom come, let thy will be done as in heaven so upon the earth;
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
11 'Give us this day our daily bread.11 Give us this day our daily bread.11 Give us our daily bread today.11 Give us today our daily bread.11 give us to-day our needed bread,
12 'And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.12 Forgive us as we forgive others.12 Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.12 and forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors,
13 And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.'13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.13 Don't allow us to be tempted. Instead, rescue us from the evil one. 13 Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.'13 and lead us not into temptation, but save us from evil.
14 "For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:14 "If you forgive the failures of others, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.14 "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.14 For if ye forgive men their offences, your heavenly Father also will forgive you yours,
15 "But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.15 But if you don't forgive others, your Father will not forgive your failures.15 But if you don't forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.15 but if ye do not forgive men their offences, neither will your Father forgive your offences.
Fasting; The True Treasure; Wealth (Mammon)
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
16 "Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.16 "When you fast, stop looking sad like hypocrites. They put on sad faces to make it obvious that they're fasting. I can guarantee this truth: That will be their only reward.16 "Moreover when you fast, don't be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward.16 And when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, downcast in countenance; for they disfigure their faces, so that they may appear fasting to men: verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
17 "But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;17 When you fast, wash your face and comb your hair.17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face;17 But thou, when fasting, anoint thy head and wash thy face,
18 so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.18 Then your fasting won't be obvious. Instead, it will be obvious to your Father who is with you in private. Your Father sees what you do in private. He will reward you.18 so that you are not seen by men to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.18 so that thou mayest not appear fasting unto men, but to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father who sees in secret shall render it to thee.
19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:19 "Stop storing up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moths and rust destroy and thieves break in and steal.19 "Don't lay up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal;19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust spoils, and where thieves dig through and steal;
20 "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:20 Instead, store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where moths and rust don't destroy and thieves don't break in and steal.20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consume, and where thieves don't break through and steal;20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust spoils, and where thieves do not dig through nor steal;
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.21 Your heart will be where your treasure is.21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.21 for where thy treasure is, there will be also thy heart.
22 "The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light.22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.22 "The eye is the lamp of the body. So if your eye is unclouded, your whole body will be full of light.22 "The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light.22 The lamp of the body is the eye; if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body will be light:
23 "But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!23 But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If the light in you is darkness, how dark it will be!23 But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!23 but if thine eye be wicked, thy whole body will be dark. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great the darkness!
24 "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.24 "No one can serve two masters. He will hate the first master and love the second, or he will be devoted to the first and despise the second. You cannot serve God and wealth.24 "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can't serve both God and Mammon.24 No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and will love the other, or he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
The Cure for Anxiety
25 "For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?25 "So I tell you to stop worrying about what you will eat, drink, or wear. Isn't life more than food and the body more than clothes?25 Therefore, I tell you, don't be anxious for your life: what you will eat, or what you will drink; nor yet for your body, what you will wear. Isn't life more than food, and the body more than clothing?25 For this cause I say unto you, Do not be careful about your life, what ye should eat and what ye should drink; nor for your body what ye should put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body than raiment?
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
26 "Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?26 "Look at the birds. They don't plant, harvest, or gather the harvest into barns. Yet, your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren't you worth more than they?26 See the birds of the sky, that they don't sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren't you of much more value than they?26 Look at the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, nor reap, nor gather into granaries, and your heavenly Father nourishes them. Are ye not much more excellent than they?
27 "And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?27 "Can any of you add a single hour to your life by worrying?27 "Which of you, by being anxious, can add one moment to his lifespan?27 But which of you by carefulness can add to his growth one cubit?
28 "And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin,28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:28 "And why worry about clothes? Notice how the flowers grow in the field. They never work or spin yarn for clothes.28 Why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They don't toil, neither do they spin,28 And why are ye careful about clothing? Observe with attention the lilies of the field, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin;
29 yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.29 But I say that not even Solomon in all his majesty was dressed like one of these flowers.29 yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these.29 but I say unto you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed as one of these.
30 "But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith!30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?30 That's the way God clothes the grass in the field. Today it's alive, and tomorrow it's thrown into an incinerator. So how much more will he clothe you people who have so little faith?30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today exists, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, won't he much more clothe you, you of little faith?30 But if God so clothe the herbage of the field, which is to-day, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, will he not much rather you, O ye of little faith?
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
31 "Do not worry then, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear for clothing?'31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?31 "Don't ever worry and say, 'What are we going to eat?' or 'What are we going to drink?' or 'What are we going to wear?'31 "Therefore don't be anxious, saying, 'What will we eat?', 'What will we drink?' or, 'With what will we be clothed?'31 Be not therefore careful, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we put on?
32 "For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.32 Everyone is concerned about these things, and your heavenly Father certainly knows you need all of them.32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.32 for all these things the nations seek after; for your heavenly Father knows that ye have need of all these things.
33 "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.33 But first, be concerned about his kingdom and what has his approval. Then all these things will be provided for you.33 But seek first God's Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.
34 "So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.34 "So don't ever worry about tomorrow. After all, tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Stop Judging-34 Therefore don't be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day's own evil is sufficient.34 Be not careful therefore for the morrow, for the morrow shall be careful about itself. Sufficient to the day is its own evil.
