Saul among Prophets
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
1 Then Samuel took the flask of oil, poured it on his head, kissed him and said, "Has not the LORD anointed you a ruler over His inheritance?1 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?1 Samuel took a flask of olive oil, poured it on Saul's head, kissed him, and said, "The LORD has anointed you to be ruler of his people Israel. You will rule his people and save them from all their enemies. This will be the sign that the LORD has anointed you to be ruler of his people. 1 Then Samuel took the vial of oil, and poured it on his head, and kissed him, and said, "Isn't it that Yahweh has anointed you to be prince over his inheritance?1 Then Samuel took the vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because Jehovah has anointed thee prince over his inheritance?
2 "When you go from me today, then you will find two men close to Rachel's tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say to you, 'The donkeys which you went to look for have been found. Now behold, your father has ceased to be concerned about the donkeys and is anxious for you, saying, "What shall I do about my son?"'2 When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?2 When you leave me today, two men will be at Rachel's grave on the border of Benjamin at Zelzah. They'll tell you, 'We've found the donkeys you went looking for. Your father no longer cares about them. Instead, he's worried about you. He keeps asking, "What can I do [to find] my son?"'2 When you have departed from me today, then you shall find two men by Rachel's tomb, in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will tell you, 'The donkeys which you went to seek have been found; and behold, your father has stopped caring about the donkeys, and is anxious for you, saying, "What shall I do for my son?"'2 When thou goest from me to-day, thou shalt meet two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say to thee, The asses are found which thou wentest to seek, and behold, thy father has dismissed the matter of the asses, and is anxious about you, saying, What shall I do for my son?
3 "Then you will go on further from there, and you will come as far as the oak of Tabor, and there three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a jug of wine;3 Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:3 Keep going until you come to the oak tree at Tabor. There you will find three men on their way to worship God at Bethel: One will be carrying three young goats, one will be carrying three loaves of bread, and one will be carrying a [full] wineskin.3 "Then you shall go on forward from there, and you shall come to the oak of Tabor; and three men shall meet you there going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three young goats, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:3 And thou shalt go on forward from thence, and shalt come to the oak of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God, to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three cakes of bread, and another carrying a flask of wine.
4 and they will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you will accept from their hand.4 And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.4 They will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you should accept from them.4 and they will greet you, and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall receive of their hand.4 And they will ask after thy welfare, and give thee two loaves, which thou shalt receive of their hands.
5 "Afterward you will come to the hill of God where the Philistine garrison is; and it shall be as soon as you have come there to the city, that you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and a lyre before them, and they will be prophesying.5 After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:5 After that, you will come to the hill of God, where the Philistines have a military post. When you arrive at the city, you will meet a group of prophets prophesying as they come from the worship site. They will be led by men playing a harp, a tambourine, a flute, and a lyre.5 "After that you shall come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall happen, when you have come there to the city, that you shall meet a band of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tambourine, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they will be prophesying:5 After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where are the outposts of the Philistines; and it shall come to pass, when thou comest thither, into the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with lute and tambour and pipe and harp before them; and they themselves prophesying.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
6 "Then the Spirit of the LORD will come upon you mightily, and you shall prophesy with them and be changed into another man.6 And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.6 Then the LORD's Spirit will come over you. You will be a different person while you prophesy with them.6 and the Spirit of Yahweh will come mightily on you, and you shall prophesy with them, and shall be turned into another man.6 And the Spirit of Jehovah will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.
7 "It shall be when these signs come to you, do for yourself what the occasion requires, for God is with you.7 And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.7 When these signs happen to you, do what you must, because God is with you.7 Let it be, when these signs have come to you, that you do as occasion shall serve you; for God is with you.7 And it shall be, when these signs shall come to thee, thou shalt do as thy hand shall find; for God is with thee.
8 "And you shall go down before me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and sacrifice peace offerings. You shall wait seven days until I come to you and show you what you should do."8 And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and show thee what thou shalt do.8 Go ahead of me to Gilgal. Then I will come to sacrifice burnt offerings and make fellowship offerings. Wait seven days until I come to tell you what to do."8 "You shall go down before me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to you, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: you shall wait seven days, until I come to you, and show you what you shall do."8 And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to thee, to offer up burnt-offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace-offerings: seven days shalt thou wait, until I come to thee and inform thee what thou shalt do.
9 Then it happened when he turned his back to leave Samuel, God changed his heart; and all those signs came about on that day.9 And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.9 When Saul turned around to leave Samuel, God changed Saul's attitude. That day all these signs happened.9 It was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs happened that day.9 And it was so that when he turned his back to go away from Samuel, God gave him another heart; and all those signs came to pass that day.
10 When they came to the hill there, behold, a group of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him mightily, so that he prophesied among them.10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.10 When Saul came to the hill, a group of prophets came to meet him, and God's Spirit came over him. He prophesied with them.10 When they came there to the hill, behold, a band of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came mightily on him, and he prophesied among them.10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
11 It came about, when all who knew him previously saw that he prophesied now with the prophets, that the people said to one another, "What has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?"11 And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?11 When all who had known him before saw how he prophesied with the prophets, the people asked one another, "What has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul one of the prophets?"11 It happened, when all who knew him before saw that, behold, he prophesied with the prophets, then the people said one to another, "What is this that is come to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?"11 And it came to pass, when all that knew him before saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
12 A man there said, "Now, who is their father?" Therefore it became a proverb: "Is Saul also among the prophets?"12 And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?12 But a man from that place asked, "But who's the chief prophet?" So it became a proverb: "Is Saul one of the prophets?"12 One of the same place answered, "Who is their father?" Therefore it became a proverb, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"12 And a man of that place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
13 When he had finished prophesying, he came to the high place.13 And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.13 And when he had finished prophesying, he came to the worship site.13 When he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.13 And when he had ended prophesying, he came to the high place.
14 Now Saul's uncle said to him and his servant, "Where did you go?" And he said, "To look for the donkeys. When we saw that they could not be found, we went to Samuel."14 And Saul's uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.14 Saul's uncle asked him and his servant, "Where did you go?" Saul answered, "To look for the donkeys, and when we couldn't find them, we went to Samuel."14 Saul's uncle said to him and to his servant, "Where did you go?" He said, "To seek the donkeys. When we saw that they were not found, we came to Samuel."14 And Saul's uncle said to him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses; and when we saw that they were nowhere, we went to Samuel.
15 Saul's uncle said, "Please tell me what Samuel said to you."15 And Saul's uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you.15 Saul's uncle said, "Please tell me what Samuel said to you."15 Saul's uncle said, "Please tell me what Samuel said to you."15 And Saul's uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said to you.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
16 So Saul said to his uncle, "He told us plainly that the donkeys had been found." But he did not tell him about the matter of the kingdom which Samuel had mentioned.16 And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.16 "He assured us the donkeys had been found," Saul answered his uncle. But Saul didn't tell him what Samuel said [about his becoming king].16 Saul said to his uncle, "He told us plainly that the donkeys were found." But concerning the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel spoke, he didn't tell him.16 And Saul said to his uncle, He told us for certain that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel had spoken, he told him not.
Saul Publicly Chosen King
17 Thereafter Samuel called the people together to the LORD at Mizpah;17 And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh;17 Samuel called the people to [come into the presence of] the LORD at Mizpah.17 Samuel called the people together to Yahweh to Mizpah;17 And Samuel called the people together to Jehovah to Mizpah.
18 and he said to the sons of Israel, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'I brought Israel up from Egypt, and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the power of all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.'18 And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you:18 He said to the Israelites, "This is what the LORD God of Israel says: I brought Israel out of Egypt and rescued you from the power of the Egyptians and all the kings who were oppressing you.18 and he said to the children of Israel, "Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, 'I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all the kingdoms that oppressed you:'18 And he said to the children of Israel, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all the kingdoms that oppressed you;
19 "But you have today rejected your God, who delivers you from all your calamities and your distresses; yet you have said, 'No, but set a king over us!' Now therefore, present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and by your clans."19 And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands.19 But now you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your troubles and distresses. You said, 'No! Place a king over us.' Now then, stand in front of the LORD by your tribes and family groups."19 but you have this day rejected your God, who himself saves you out of all your calamities and your distresses; and you have said to him, '[No], but set a king over us.' Now therefore present yourselves before Yahweh by your tribes, and by your thousands."19 but ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your troubles, and have said unto him, Nay, but a king shalt thou set over us. Now therefore present yourselves before Jehovah by your tribes, and by your thousands.
20 Thus Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot.20 And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.20 When Samuel had all the tribes of Israel come forward, the tribe of Benjamin was chosen.20 So Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken.20 And Samuel caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
21 Then he brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its families, and the Matrite family was taken. And Saul the son of Kish was taken; but when they looked for him, he could not be found.21 When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.21 When he had the tribe of Benjamin come forward by families, the family of Matri was chosen. Then Saul, the son of Kish, was chosen. They looked for him but couldn't find him.21 He brought the tribe of Benjamin near by their families; and the family of the Matrites was taken; and Saul the son of Kish was taken: but when they sought him, he could not be found.21 And he caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, and the family of Matri was taken; and Saul the son of Kish was taken. And they sought him, but he was not to be found.
22 Therefore they inquired further of the LORD, "Has the man come here yet?" So the LORD said, "Behold, he is hiding himself by the baggage."22 Therefore they inquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold he hath hid himself among the stuff.22 They asked the LORD again, "Has he arrived here yet?" The LORD answered, "He's hiding among the baggage."22 Therefore they asked of Yahweh further, "Is there yet a man to come here?" Yahweh answered, "Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage."22 Therefore they inquired of Jehovah further, Will the man yet come hither? And Jehovah answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the baggage.
23 So they ran and took him from there, and when he stood among the people, he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward.23 And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.23 They ran and got him from there. As he stood among the people, he was a head taller than everyone else.23 They ran and fetched him there; and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.23 And they ran and fetched him thence; and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.
24 Samuel said to all the people, "Do you see him whom the LORD has chosen? Surely there is no one like him among all the people." So all the people shouted and said, "Long live the king!"24 And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.24 Samuel asked the people, "Do you see whom the LORD has chosen? There is no one like him among all the people." Then all the people shouted, "Long live the king!"24 Samuel said to all the people, "You see him whom Yahweh has chosen, that there is none like him among all the people?" All the people shouted, and said, "[Long] live the king!"24 And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom Jehovah has chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted and said, May the king live.
25 Then Samuel told the people the ordinances of the kingdom, and wrote them in the book and placed it before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his house.25 Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.25 Samuel explained the laws concerning kingship to the people. He wrote the laws on a scroll, which he placed in front of the LORD. Then Samuel sent the people back to their homes.25 Then Samuel told the people the regulations of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before Yahweh. Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.25 And Samuel told the people the right of the kingdom, and wrote it in the book, and laid it before Jehovah. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
26 Saul also went to his house at Gibeah; and the valiant men whose hearts God had touched went with him.26 And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.26 Saul also went home to Gibeah. With him went some soldiers whose hearts God had touched.26 Saul also went to his house to Gibeah; and there went with him the army, whose hearts God had touched.26 And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and with him went the band, whose hearts God had touched.
27 But certain worthless men said, "How can this one deliver us?" And they despised him and did not bring him any present. But he kept silent.27 But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought no presents. But he held his peace.27 However, some good-for-nothing people asked, "How can this man save us?" They despised him and wouldn't bring him presents, but he didn't respond.27 But certain worthless fellows said, "How shall this man save us?" They despised him, and brought him no present. But he held his peace.27 But the children of Belial said, How should this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no gifts. But he was as one deaf.
