| 1 Now I, Paul, myself urge you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ-- I who am meek when face to face with you, but bold toward you when absent! | 1 Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: | 1 I, Paul, make my appeal to you with the gentleness and kindness of Christ. I'm the one who is humble when I'm with you but forceful toward you when I'm not with you. | 1 Now I Paul, myself, entreat you by the humility and gentleness of Christ; I who in your presence am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you. | 1 But I myself, Paul, entreat you by the meekness and gentleness of the Christ, who, as to appearance, when present am mean among you, but absent am bold towards you; | 2 I ask that when I am present I need not be bold with the confidence with which I propose to be courageous against some, who regard us as if we walked according to the flesh. | 2 But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. | 2 I beg you that when I am with you I won't have to deal forcefully with you. I expect I will have to because some people think that we are only guided by human motives. | 2 Yes, I beg you that I may not, when present, show courage with the confidence with which I intend to be bold against some, who consider us to be walking according to the flesh. | 2 but I beseech that present I may not be bold with the confidence with which I think to be daring towards some who think of us as walking according to flesh. | 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, | 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: | 3 Of course we are human, but we don't fight like humans. | 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we don't wage war according to the flesh; | 3 For walking in flesh, we do not war according to flesh. | 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. | 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) | 4 The weapons we use in our fight are not made by humans. Rather, they are powerful weapons from God. With them we destroy people's defenses, that is, their arguments | 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds, | 4 For the arms of our warfare are not fleshly, but powerful according to God to the overthrow of strongholds; | 5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, | 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; | 5 and all their intellectual arrogance that oppose the knowledge of God. We take every thought captive so that it is obedient to Christ. | 5 throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ; | 5 overthrowing reasonings and every high thing that lifts itself up against the knowledge of God, and leading captive every thought into the obedience of the Christ; | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
| 6 and we are ready to punish all disobedience, whenever your obedience is complete. | 6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. | 6 We are ready to punish every act of disobedience when you have become completely obedient. | 6 and being in readiness to avenge all disobedience, when your obedience will be made full. | 6 and having in readiness to avenge all disobedience when your obedience shall have been fulfilled. | 7 You are looking at things as they are outwardly. If anyone is confident in himself that he is Christ's, let him consider this again within himself, that just as he is Christ's, so also are we. | 7 Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's. | 7 Look at the plain facts! If anyone is confident he belongs to Christ, he should take note that we also belong to Christ. | 7 Do you look at things only as they appear in front of your face? If anyone trusts in himself that he is Christ's, let him consider this again with himself, that, even as he is Christ's, so also we are Christ's. | 7 Do ye look at what concerns appearance? If any one has confidence in himself that he is of Christ, let him think this again in himself, that even as he is of Christ, so also are we. | 8 For even if I boast somewhat further about our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be put to shame, | 8 For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed: | 8 So, if I brag a little too much about the authority which the Lord gave us, I'm not ashamed. The Lord gave us this authority to help you, not to hurt you. | 8 For though I should boast somewhat abundantly concerning our authority, (which the Lord gave for building you up, and not for casting you down) I will not be disappointed, | 8 For and if I should boast even somewhat more abundantly of our authority, which the Lord has given to us for building up and not for your overthrowing, I shall not be put to shame; | 9 for I do not wish to seem as if I would terrify you by my letters. | 9 That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters. | 9 I don't want you to think that I'm trying to frighten you with my letters. | 9 that I may not seem as if I desire to terrify you by my letters. | 9 that I may not seem as if I was frightening you by letters: | 10 For they say, "His letters are weighty and strong, but his personal presence is unimpressive and his speech contemptible." | 10 For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible. | 10 I know that someone is saying that my letters are powerful and strong, but that I'm a weakling and a terrible speaker. | 10 For, "His letters," they say, "are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech is despised." | 10 because his letters, he says, are weighty and strong, but his presence in the body weak, and his speech naught. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
| 11 Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when absent, such persons we are also in deed when present. | 11 Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present. | 11 The person who is saying those things should take note of this fact: When we are with you we will do the things that we wrote about in our letters when we weren't with you. | 11 Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when we are absent, such are we also in deed when we are present. | 11 Let such a one think this, that such as we are in word by letters when absent, such also present in deed. | 12 For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding. | 12 For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. | 12 We wouldn't put ourselves in the same class with or compare ourselves to those who are bold enough to make their own recommendations. Certainly, when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves to themselves, they show how foolish they are. | 12 For we are not bold to number or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But they themselves, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are without understanding. | 12 For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves; but these, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are not intelligent. | 13 But we will not boast beyond our measure, but within the measure of the sphere which God apportioned to us as a measure, to reach even as far as you. | 13 But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you. | 13 How can we brag about things that no one can evaluate? Instead, we will only brag about what God has given us to do-coming to [the city of Corinth] where you live. | 13 But we will not boast beyond proper limits, but within the boundaries with which God appointed to us, which reach even to you. | 13 Now we will not boast out of measure, but according to the measure of the rule which the God of measure has apportioned to us, to reach to you also. | 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as if we did not reach to you, for we were the first to come even as far as you in the gospel of Christ; | 14 For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ: | 14 It's not as though we hadn't already been to Corinth. We're not overstating the facts. The fact is that we were the first to arrive in Corinth with the Good News about Christ. | 14 For we don't stretch ourselves too much, as though we didn't reach to you. For we came even as far as to you with the Good News of Christ, | 14 For we do not, as not reaching to you, overstretch ourselves, (for we have come to you also in the glad tidings of the Christ;) | 15 not boasting beyond our measure, that is, in other men's labors, but with the hope that as your faith grows, we will be, within our sphere, enlarged even more by you, | 15 Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men's labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly, | 15 How can we brag about things done by others that can't be evaluated? We have confidence that as your faith grows, you will think enough of us to give us the help we need to carry out our assignment- | 15 not boasting beyond proper limits in other men's labors, but having hope that as your faith grows, we will be abundantly enlarged by you in our sphere of influence, | 15 not boasting out of measure in other people's labours, but having hope, your faith increasing, to be enlarged amongst you, according to our rule, yet more abundantly | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
| 16 so as to preach the gospel even to the regions beyond you, and not to boast in what has been accomplished in the sphere of another. | 16 To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand. | 16 spreading the Good News in the regions far beyond you. We won't brag about things already accomplished by someone else. | 16 so as to preach the Good News even to the parts beyond you, not to boast in what someone else has already done. | 16 to announce the glad tidings to that which is beyond you, not to be boasting in another's rule of things made ready to hand. | 17 But HE WHO BOASTS IS TO BOAST IN THE LORD. | 17 But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. | 17 "Whoever brags should brag about what the Lord has done." | 17 But "he who boasts, let him boast in the Lord." | 17 But he that boasts, let him boast in the Lord. | 18 For it is not he who commends himself that is approved, but he whom the Lord commends. | 18 For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth. | 18 It isn't the person who makes his own recommendation who receives approval, but the person whom the Lord recommends. | 18 For it isn't he who commends himself who is approved, but whom the Lord commends. | 18 For not he that commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends. |
