Paul’s Defense before Agrippa | ||||

| 1 Agrippa said to Paul, "You are permitted to speak for yourself." Then Paul stretched out his hand and proceeded to make his defense: | 1 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself: | 1 Agrippa said to Paul, "You're free to speak for yourself." Paul acknowledged King Agrippa and then began his defense. | 1 Agrippa said to Paul, "You may speak for yourself." Then Paul stretched out his hand, and made his defense. | 1 And Agrippa said to Paul, It is permitted thee to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretching out his hand answered in his defence: | 2 "In regard to all the things of which I am accused by the Jews, I consider myself fortunate, King Agrippa, that I am about to make my defense before you today; | 2 I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews: | 2 "King Agrippa, I think I'm fortunate today to stand in front of you and defend myself against every charge that the Jews brought against me. | 2 "I think myself happy, King Agrippa, that I am to make my defense before you this day concerning all the things that I am accused by the Jews, | 2 I count myself happy, king Agrippa, in having to answer to-day before thee concerning all of which I am accused by the Jews, | 3 especially because you are an expert in all customs and questions among the Jews; therefore I beg you to listen to me patiently. | 3 Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently. | 3 I say this since you are especially familiar with every custom and controversy in Judaism. So I ask you to listen patiently to me. | 3 especially because you are expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews. Therefore I beg you to hear me patiently. | 3 especially because thou art acquainted with all the customs and questions which are among the Jews; wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently. | 4 "So then, all Jews know my manner of life from my youth up, which from the beginning was spent among my own nation and at Jerusalem; | 4 My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews; | 4 "All the Jews know how I lived the earliest days of my youth with my own people and in Jerusalem. | 4 "Indeed, all the Jews know my way of life from my youth up, which was from the beginning among my own nation and at Jerusalem; | 4 My manner of life then from my youth, which from its commencement was passed among my nation in Jerusalem, know all the Jews, | 5 since they have known about me for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that I lived as a Pharisee according to the strictest sect of our religion. | 5 Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee. | 5 They've known me for a long time and can testify, if they're willing, that I followed the strictest party of our religion. | 6 "And now I am standing trial for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers; | 6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God, unto our fathers: | 6 "I'm on trial now because I expect God to keep the promise that he made to our ancestors. | 6 Now I stand here to be judged for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers, | 6 And now I stand to be judged because of the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers, | 7 the promise to which our twelve tribes hope to attain, as they earnestly serve God night and day. Concerning this hope I am accused by the Jews, King Agrippa! | 7 to which our whole twelve tribes serving incessantly day and night hope to arrive; about which hope, O king, I am accused of the Jews. | 8 "Why is it considered incredible among you people if God does raise the dead? | 8 Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead? | 8 Why do all of you refuse to believe that God can bring dead people back to life? | 8 Why is it judged incredible with you, if God does raise the dead? | 8 Why should it be judged a thing incredible in your sight if God raises the dead? | 9 "So then, I thought to myself that I had to do many things hostile to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. | 9 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. | 9 "I used to think that I had to do a lot of things to oppose the one named Jesus of Nazareth. | 9 "I myself most certainly thought that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. | 9 I indeed myself thought that I ought to do much against the name of Jesus the Nazaraean. | 10 "And this is just what I did in Jerusalem; not only did I lock up many of the saints in prisons, having received authority from the chief priests, but also when they were being put to death I cast my vote against them. | 10 Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them. | 10 That is what I did in Jerusalem. | 16 'But get up and stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but also to the things in which I will appear to you; | 16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; | 16 Stand up! I have appeared to you for a reason. I spread the same message to non-Jewish people. Both groups were expected to change the way they thought and acted and to turn to God.
