You Are Built Up in Christ | ||||
NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
1 For I want you to know how great a struggle I have on your behalf and for those who are at Laodicea, and for all those who have not personally seen my face, | 1 For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; | 1 I want you to know how hard I work for you, for the people of Laodicea, and for people I have never met. | 1 For I desire to have you know how greatly I struggle for you, and for those at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; | 1 For I would have you know what combat I have for you, and those in Laodicea, and as many as have not seen my face in flesh; | 2 that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God's mystery, that is, Christ Himself, | 2 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; | 2 Because they are united in love, I work so that they may be encouraged by all the riches that come from a complete understanding of Christ. He is the mystery of God. | 2 that their hearts may be comforted, they being knit together in love, and gaining all riches of the full assurance of understanding, that they may know the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, | 2 to the end that their hearts may be encouraged, being united together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the full knowledge of the mystery of God; | 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. | 3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. | 3 God has hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge in Christ. | 3 in whom are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge hidden. | 3 in which are hid all the treasures of wisdom and of knowledge. | 4 I say this so that no one will delude you with persuasive argument. | 4 And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words. | 4 I say this so that no one will mislead you with arguments that merely sound good. | 4 Now this I say that no one may delude you with persuasiveness of speech. | 4 And I say this to the end that no one may delude you by persuasive speech. | 5 For even though I am absent in body, nevertheless I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good discipline and the stability of your faith in Christ. | 5 For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ. | 5 Although I'm absent from you physically, I'm with you in spirit. I'm happy to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is. | 5 For though I am absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, rejoicing and seeing your order, and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ. | 5 For if indeed in the flesh I am absent, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing and seeing your order, and the firmness of your faith in Christ. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
6 Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, | 6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: | 6 You received Christ Jesus the Lord, so continue to live as Christ's people. | 6 As therefore you received Christ Jesus, the Lord, walk in him, | 6 As therefore ye have received the Christ, Jesus the Lord, walk in him, | 7 having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude. | 7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. | 7 Sink your roots in him and build on him. Be strengthened by the faith that you were taught, and overflow with thanksgiving. | 7 rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, even as you were taught, abounding in it in thanksgiving. | 7 rooted and built up in him, and assured in the faith, even as ye have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. | 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. | 8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. | 8 Be careful not to let anyone rob you [of this faith] through a shallow and misleading philosophy. Such a person follows human traditions and the world's way of doing things rather than following Christ. | 8 Be careful that you don't let anyone rob you through his philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the elements of the world, and not after Christ. | 8 See that there be no one who shall lead you away as a prey through philosophy and vain deceit, according to the teaching of men, according to the elements of the world, and not according to Christ. | 9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, | 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. | 9 All of God lives in Christ's body, | 9 For in him all the fullness of the Godhead dwells bodily, | 9 For in him dwells all the fulness of the Godhead bodily; | 10 and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority; | 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: | 10 and God has made you complete in Christ. Christ is in charge of every ruler and authority. | 10 and in him you are made full, who is the head of all principality and power; | 10 and ye are complete in him, who is the head of all principality and authority, | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
11 and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; | 11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: | 11 In him you were also circumcised. It was not a circumcision performed by human hands. But it was a removal of the corrupt nature in the circumcision performed by Christ. | 11 in whom you were also circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, in the putting off of the body of the sins of the flesh, in the circumcision of Christ; | 11 in whom also ye have been circumcised with circumcision not done by hand, in the putting off of the body of the flesh, in the circumcision of the Christ; | 12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. | 12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. | 12 This happened when you were placed in the tomb with Christ through baptism. In baptism you were also brought back to life with Christ through faith in the power of God, who brought him back to life. | 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. | 12 buried with him in baptism, in which ye have been also raised with him through faith of the working of God who raised him from among the dead. | 13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, | 13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; | 13 You were once dead because of your failures and your uncircumcised corrupt nature. But God made you alive with Christ when he forgave all our failures. | 13 You were dead through your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh. He made you alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, | 13 And you, being dead in offences and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, he has quickened together with him, having forgiven us all the offences; | 14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. | 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; | 14 He did this by erasing the charges that were brought against us by the written laws God had established. He took the charges away by nailing them to the cross. | 14 wiping out the handwriting in ordinances which was against us; and he has taken it out of the way, nailing it to the cross; | 14 having effaced the handwriting in ordinances which stood out against us, which was contrary to us, he has taken it also out of the way, having nailed it to the cross; | 15 When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him. | 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. | 15 He stripped the rulers and authorities [of their power] and made a public spectacle of them as he celebrated his victory in Christ. | 15 having stripped the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it. | 15 having spoiled principalities and authorities, he made a show of them publicly, leading them in triumph by it. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
16 Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day-- | 16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: | 16 Therefore, let no one judge you because of what you eat or drink or about the observance of annual holy days, New Moon Festivals, or weekly worship days. | 16 Let no one therefore judge you in eating, or in drinking, or with respect to a feast day or a new moon or a Sabbath day, | 16 Let none therefore judge you in meat or in drink, or in matter of feast, or new moon, or sabbaths, | 17 things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ. | 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. | 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the body [that casts the shadow] belongs to Christ. | 17 which are a shadow of the things to come; but the body is Christ's. | 17 which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. | 18 Let no one keep defrauding you of your prize by delighting in self-abasement and the worship of the angels, taking his stand on visions he has seen, inflated without cause by his fleshly mind, | 18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, | 18 Let no one who delights in [false] humility and the worship of angels tell you that you don't deserve a prize. Such a person, whose sinful mind fills him with arrogance, gives endless details of the visions he has seen. | 18 Let no one rob you of your prize by a voluntary humility and worshipping of the angels, dwelling in the things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, | 18 Let no one fraudulently deprive you of your prize, doing his own will in humility and worship of angels, entering into things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by the mind of his flesh, | 19 and not holding fast to the head, from whom the entire body, being supplied and held together by the joints and ligaments, grows with a growth which is from God. | 19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God. | 19 He doesn't hold on to [Christ,] the head. Christ makes the whole body grow as God wants it to, through support and unity given by the joints and ligaments. | 19 and not holding firmly to the Head, from whom all the body, being supplied and knit together through the joints and ligaments, grows with God's growth. | 19 and not holding fast the head, from whom all the body, ministered to and united together by the joints and bands, increases with the increase of God. | 20 If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to decrees, such as, | 20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, | 20 If you have died with Christ to the world's way of doing things, why do you let others tell you how to live? It's as though you were still under the world's influence. | 20 If you died with Christ from the elements of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to ordinances, | 20 If ye have died with Christ from the elements of the world, why as if alive in the world do ye subject yourselves to ordinances? | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
21 "Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!" | 21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not; | 21 People will tell you, "Don't handle this! Don't taste or touch that!" | 21 "Don't handle, nor taste, nor touch" | 21 Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch, | 22 (which all refer to things destined to perish with use)-- in accordance with the commandments and teachings of men? | 22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? | 22 All of these things deal with objects that are only used up anyway. | 22 (all of which perish with use), according to the precepts and doctrines of men? | 22 (things which are all for destruction in the using of them:) according to the injunctions and teachings of men, | 23 These are matters which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence. | 23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh. | 23 These things look like wisdom with their self-imposed worship, [false] humility, and harsh treatment of the body. But they have no value for holding back the constant desires of your corrupt nature. | 23 Which things indeed appear like wisdom in self-imposed worship, and humility, and severity to the body; but aren't of any value against the indulgence of the flesh. | 23 (which have indeed an appearance of wisdom in voluntary worship, and humility, and harsh treatment of the body, not in a certain honour,) to the satisfaction of the flesh. |
