1 "If there is a dispute between men and they go to court, and the judges decide their case, and they justify the righteous and condemn the wicked, | 1 If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked. | 1 This is what you must do whenever [two] people have a disagreement that is brought into court. The judges will hear the case and decide who's right and who's wrong. | 1 If there be a controversy between men, and they come to judgment, and [the judges] judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked; | 1 If there be a controversy between men, and they resort to judgment, and they judge their case; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked. | 2 then it shall be if the wicked man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall then make him lie down and be beaten in his presence with the number of stripes according to his guilt. | 2 And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number. | 2 If the person who's in the wrong deserves to be beaten, the judge will order him to lie down. Then the judge will have him beaten with as many lashes as the crime deserves. | 2 and it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his wickedness, by number. | 2 And it shall be if the wicked man have deserved to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and be beaten before his face, according to the measure of his wickedness with a certain number of stripes. | 3 "He may beat him forty times but no more, so that he does not beat him with many more stripes than these and your brother is not degraded in your eyes. | 3 Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee. | 3 Forty lashes may be given, but no more. If an Israelite were given more than that, he would be publicly humiliated. | 3 Forty stripes he may give him, he shall not exceed; lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then your brother should seem vile to you. | 3 With forty stripes shall they beat him; they shall not exceed, lest, if they continue to beat him with many stripes above these, thy brother become despicable in thine eyes. | 4 "You shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing. | 4 Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn. | 4 Never muzzle an ox when it's threshing grain. | 4 You shall not muzzle the ox when he treads out [the grain]. | 4 Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn. | 5 "When brothers live together and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall not be married outside the family to a strange man. Her husband's brother shall go in to her and take her to himself as wife and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her. | 5 If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her. | 5 When brothers live together and one of them dies without having a son, his widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband's brother must marry her and sleep with her. He must do his duty as her brother-in-law. | 5 If brothers dwell together, and one of them die, and have no son, the wife of the dead shall not be married outside to a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in to her, and take her to him as wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her. | 5 If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no son, the wife of the dead shall not marry a stranger abroad: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him as wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother unto her. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
6 "It shall be that the firstborn whom she bears shall assume the name of his dead brother, so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel. | 6 And it shall be, that the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel. | 6 Then the first son she has will carry the dead brother's name so that his name won't die out in Israel. | 6 It shall be, that the firstborn whom she bears shall succeed in the name of his brother who is dead, that his name not be blotted out of Israel. | 6 And it shall be, that the firstborn that she beareth shall stand in the name of his brother who is dead, that his name be not blotted out from Israel. | 7 "But if the man does not desire to take his brother's wife, then his brother's wife shall go up to the gate to the elders and say, 'My husband's brother refuses to establish a name for his brother in Israel; he is not willing to perform the duty of a husband's brother to me.' | 7 And if the man like not to take his brother's wife, then let his brother's wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband's brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will not perform the duty of my husband's brother. | 7 But if the man doesn't want to marry his brother's widow, she must go to the leaders of the city at the city gate. She must say, "My brother-in-law refuses to let his brother's name continue in Israel. He doesn't want to do his duty as my brother-in-law." | 7 If the man doesn't want to take his brother's wife, then his brother's wife shall go up to the gate to the elders, and say, "My husband's brother refuses to raise up to his brother a name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband's brother to me." | 7 But if the man like not to take his brother's wife, his brother's wife shall go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband's brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel: he will not perform for me the duty of a husband's brother. | 8 "Then the elders of his city shall summon him and speak to him. And if he persists and says, 'I do not desire to take her,' | 8 Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him: and if he stand to it, and say, I like not to take her; | 8 Then the leaders of the city must summon him and talk to him. If he persists in saying that he doesn't want to marry her, | 8 Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak to him: and if he stand, and say, "I don't want to take her;" | 8 Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak unto him; and if he stand to it and say, I like not to take her; | 9 then his brother's wife shall come to him in the sight of the elders, and pull his sandal off his foot and spit in his face; and she shall declare, 'Thus it is done to the man who does not build up his brother's house.' | 9 Then shall his brother's wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother's house. | 9 his brother's widow must go up to him in the presence of the leaders. She must take off one of his sandals and spit in his face. She must make this formal statement: "This is what happens to a man who refuses to continue his brother's family line." | 9 then his brother's wife shall come to him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face; and she shall answer and say, "So shall it be done to the man who does not build up his brother's house." | 9 then shall his brother's wife come near to him before the eyes of the elders, and draw his sandal from his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto the man that will not build up his brother's house. | 10 "In Israel his name shall be called, 'The house of him whose sandal is removed.' | 10 And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that hath his shoe loosed. | 10 Then in Israel his family will be called the Family of the Man Without a Sandal. | 10 His name shall be called in Israel, The house of him who has his shoe untied. | 10 And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that hath his shoe drawn off. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
11 "If two men, a man and his countryman, are struggling together, and the wife of one comes near to deliver her husband from the hand of the one who is striking him, and puts out her hand and seizes his genitals, | 11 When men strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets: | 11 This is what you must do when two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from the man who is beating him. If she tries to stop the fight by grabbing the other man's genitals, | 11 When men strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draws near to deliver her husband out of the hand of him who strikes him, and puts forth her hand, and takes him by the secrets; | 11 When men fight together one with another, and the wife of the one come near to rescue her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and stretch out her hand, and seize him by his secret parts, | 12 then you shall cut off her hand; you shall not show pity. | 12 Then thou shalt cut off her hand, thine eye shall not pity her. | 12 cut off her hand. Have no pity on her. | 12 then you shall cut off her hand, your eye shall have no pity. | 12 thou shalt cut off her hand; thine eye shall not spare. | 13 "You shall not have in your bag differing weights, a large and a small. | 13 Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, a great and a small. | 13 Never carry two sets of weights, a heavier one and a lighter one. | 13 You shall not have in your bag diverse weights, a great and a small. | 13 Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, a great and a small. | 14 "You shall not have in your house differing measures, a large and a small. | 14 Thou shalt not have in thine house divers measures, a great and a small. | 14 Never have two kinds of measures in your house, a larger one and a smaller one. | 14 You shall not have in your house diverse measures, a great and a small. | 14 Thou shalt not have in thy house divers ephahs, a great and a small. | 15 "You shall have a full and just weight; you shall have a full and just measure, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you. | 15 But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. | 15 Use accurate and honest weights and measures. Then you will live for a long time in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. | 15 You shall have a perfect and just weight. You shall have a perfect and just measure, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you. | 15 A perfect and just weight shalt thou have; a perfect and just ephah shalt thou have; that thy days may be prolonged in the land that Jehovah thy God giveth thee. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
16 "For everyone who does these things, everyone who acts unjustly is an abomination to the LORD your God. | 16 For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, are an abomination unto the LORD thy God. | 16 Everyone who uses dishonest weights and measures is disgusting to the LORD. | 16 For all who do such things, [even] all who do unrighteously, are an abomination to Yahweh your God. | 16 For every one that doeth such things, every one that doeth unrighteousness, is an abomination to Jehovah thy God. | 17 "Remember what Amalek did to you along the way when you came out from Egypt, | 17 Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way, when ye were come forth out of Egypt; | 17 Remember what the Amalekites did to you on your trip from Egypt. | 17 Remember what Amalek did to you by the way as you came forth out of Egypt; | 17 Remember what Amalek did unto thee on the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt; | 18 how he met you along the way and attacked among you all the stragglers at your rear when you were faint and weary; and he did not fear God. | 18 How he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, even all that were feeble behind thee, when thou wast faint and weary; and he feared not God. | 18 They attacked you when you were tired and exhausted and killed all those who were lagging behind. They weren't afraid of God. | 18 how he met you by the way, and struck the hindmost of you, all who were feeble behind you, when you were faint and weary; and he didn't fear God. | 18 how he met thee on the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, all the feeble that lagged behind thee, when thou wast faint and weary, and he feared not God. | 19 "Therefore it shall come about when the LORD your God has given you rest from all your surrounding enemies, in the land which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you must not forget. | 19 Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget it. | 19 So when the LORD your God gives you peace from all your enemies around you in the land that he is giving you as your own property, don't forget to erase every memory of the Amalekites from the earth. | 19 Therefore it shall be, when Yahweh your God has given you rest from all your enemies all around, in the land which Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance to possess it, that you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under the sky; you shall not forget. | 19 And it shall be, when Jehovah thy God shall have given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land that Jehovah thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens; thou shalt not forget it. |
