The Healing at Bethesda
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
1 After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.1 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.1 Later, Jesus went to Jerusalem for a Jewish festival.1 After these things, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.1 After these things was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes.2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.2 Near Sheep Gate in Jerusalem was a pool called [Bethesda] in Hebrew. It had five porches.2 Now in Jerusalem by the sheep gate, there is a pool, which is called in Hebrew, "Bethesda," having five porches.2 Now there is in Jerusalem, at the sheepgate, a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.
3 In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, waiting for the moving of the waters;3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.3 Under these porches a large number of sick people-people who were blind, lame, or paralyzed-used to lie. 3 In these lay a great multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, or paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water;3 In these lay a multitude of sick, blind, lame, withered, awaiting the moving of the water.
4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.4 4 for an angel went down at certain times into the pool, and stirred up the water. Whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was made whole of whatever disease he had.4 For an angel descended at a certain season in the pool and troubled the water. Whoever therefore first went in after the troubling of the water became well, whatever disease he laboured under.
5 A man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.5 One man, who had been sick for 38 years, was lying there.5 A certain man was there, who had been sick for thirty-eight years.5 But there was a certain man there who had been suffering under his infirmity thirty and eight years.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, "Do you wish to get well?"6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?6 Jesus saw the man lying there and knew that he had been sick for a long time. So Jesus asked the man, "Would you like to get well?"6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been sick for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to be made well?"6 Jesus seeing this man lying there, and knowing that he was in that state now a great length of time, says to him, Wouldest thou become well?
7 The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me."7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.7 The sick man answered Jesus, "Sir, I don't have anyone to put me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I'm trying to get there, someone else steps into the pool ahead of me."7 The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I'm coming, another steps down before me."7 The infirm man answered him, Sir, I have not a man, in order, when the water has been troubled, to cast me into the pool; but while I am coming another descends before me.
8 Jesus said to him, "Get up, pick up your pallet and walk."8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.8 Jesus told the man, "Get up, pick up your cot, and walk."8 Jesus said to him, "Arise, take up your mat, and walk."8 Jesus says to him, Arise, take up thy couch and walk.
9 Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk. Now it was the Sabbath on that day.9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.9 The man immediately became well, picked up his cot, and walked. That happened on a day of worship.9 Immediately, the man was made well, and took up his mat and walked. Now it was the Sabbath on that day.9 And immediately the man became well, and took up his couch and walked: and on that day was sabbath.
10 So the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, "It is the Sabbath, and it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet."10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.10 So the Jews told the man who had been healed, "This is a day of worship. You're not allowed to carry your cot today."10 So the Jews said to him who was cured, "It is the Sabbath. It is not lawful for you to carry the mat."10 The Jews therefore said to the healed man, It is sabbath, it is not permitted thee to take up thy couch.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
11 But he answered them, "He who made me well was the one who said to me, 'Pick up your pallet and walk.'"11 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.11 The man replied, "The man who made me well told me to pick up my cot and walk."11 He answered them, "He who made me well, the same said to me, 'Take up your mat, and walk.'"11 He answered them, He that made me well, he said to me, Take up thy couch and walk.
12 They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Pick up your pallet and walk '?"12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?12 The Jews asked him, "Who is the man who told you to pick it up and walk?"12 Then they asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your mat, and walk'?"12 They asked him therefore, Who is the man who said to thee, Take up thy couch and walk?
13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place.13 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.13 But the man who had been healed didn't know who Jesus was. (Jesus had withdrawn from the crowd.)13 But he who was healed didn't know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a crowd being in the place.13 But he that had been healed knew not who it was, for Jesus had slidden away, there being a crowd in the place.
14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you."14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.14 Later, Jesus met the man in the temple courtyard and told him, "You're well now. Stop sinning so that something worse doesn't happen to you."14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "Behold, you are made well. Sin no more, so that nothing worse happens to you."14 After these things Jesus finds him in the temple, and said to him, Behold, thou art become well: sin no more, that something worse do not happen to thee.
15 The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.15 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.15 The man went back to the Jews and told them that Jesus was the man who had made him well.15 The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
16 For this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.16 The Jews began to persecute Jesus because he kept healing people on the day of worship.16 For this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill him, because he did these things on the Sabbath.16 And for this the Jews persecuted Jesus and sought to kill him, because he had done these things on sabbath.
17 But He answered them, "My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working."17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.17 Jesus replied to them, "My Father is working right now, and so am I."17 But Jesus answered them, "My Father is still working, so I am working, too."17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto and I work.
Jesus’ Equality with God
18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.18 His reply made the Jews more intent on killing him. Not only did he break the laws about the day of worship, but also he made himself equal to God when he said repeatedly that God was his Father.18 For this cause therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God.18 For this therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he had not only violated the sabbath, but also said that God was his own Father, making himself equal with God.
19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.19 Jesus said to the Jews, "I can guarantee this truth: The Son cannot do anything on his own. He can do only what he sees the Father doing. Indeed, the Son does exactly what the Father does.19 Jesus therefore answered them, "Most certainly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the Father doing. For whatever things he does, these the Son also does likewise.19 Jesus therefore answered and said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, The Son can do nothing of himself save whatever he sees the Father doing: for whatever things he does, these things also the Son does in like manner.
20 "For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel.20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.20 The Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. The Father will show him even greater things to do than these things so that you will be amazed.20 For the Father has affection for the Son, and shows him all things that he himself does. He will show him greater works than these, that you may marvel.20 For the Father loves the Son and shews him all things which he himself does; and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may wonder.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
21 "For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.21 In the same way that the Father brings back the dead and gives them life, the Son gives life to anyone he chooses.21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom he desires.21 For even as the Father raises the dead and quickens them, thus the Son also quickens whom he will:
22 "For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son,22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:22 "The Father doesn't judge anyone. He has entrusted judgment entirely to the Son22 For the Father judges no one, but he has given all judgment to the Son,22 for neither does the Father judge any one, but has given all judgment to the Son;
23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.23 so that everyone will honor the Son as they honor the Father. Whoever doesn't honor the Son doesn't honor the Father who sent him.23 that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who doesn't honor the Son doesn't honor the Father who sent him.23 that all may honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He who honours not the Son, honours not the Father who has sent him.
24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.24 I can guarantee this truth: Those who listen to what I say and believe in the one who sent me will have eternal life. They won't be judged because they have already passed from death to life.24 "Most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and doesn't come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that he that hears my word, and believes him that has sent me, has life eternal, and does not come into judgment, but is passed out of death into life.
Two Resurrections
25 "Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.25 "I can guarantee this truth: A time is coming (and is now here) when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who respond to it will live.25 Most certainly, I tell you, the hour comes, and now is, when the dead will hear the Son of God's voice; and those who hear will live.25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that have heard shall live.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
26 "For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself;26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;26 The Father is the source of life, and he has enabled the Son to be the source of life too.26 For as the Father has life in himself, even so he gave to the Son also to have life in himself.26 For even as the Father has life in himself, so he has given to the Son also to have life in himself,
27 and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.27 "He has also given the Son authority to pass judgment because he is the Son of Man. 27 He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man.27 and has given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is Son of man.
28 "Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,28 Don't be surprised at what I've just said. A time is coming when all the dead will hear his voice,28 Don't marvel at this, for the hour comes, in which all that are in the tombs will hear his voice,28 Wonder not at this, for an hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs shall hear his voice,
29 and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.29 and they will come out of their tombs. Those who have done good will come back to life and live. But those who have done evil will come back to life and will be judged.29 and will come out; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.29 and shall go forth; those that have practised good, to resurrection of life, and those that have done evil, to resurrection of judgment.
30 "I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.30 I can't do anything on my own. As I listen [to the Father], I make my judgments. My judgments are right because I don't try to do what I want but what the one who sent me wants.30 I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous; because I don't seek my own will, but the will of my Father who sent me.30 I cannot do anything of myself; as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous, because I do not seek my will, but the will of him that has sent me.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
31 "If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true.31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.31 "If I testify on my own behalf, what I say isn't true.31 "If I testify about myself, my witness is not valid.31 If I bear witness concerning myself, my witness is not true.
32 "There is another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.32 Someone else testifies on my behalf, and I know that what he says about me is true.32 It is another who testifies about me. I know that the testimony which he testifies about me is true.32 It is another who bears witness concerning me, and I know that the witness which he bears concerning me is true.
Witness of John
33 "You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.33 You sent people to John [the Baptizer], and he testified to the truth.33 You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.33 Ye have sent unto John, and he has borne witness to the truth.
34 "But the testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved.34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.34 But I don't depend on human testimony. I'm telling you this to save you.34 But the testimony which I receive is not from man. However, I say these things that you may be saved.34 But I do not receive witness from man, but I say this that ye might be saved.
35 "He was the lamp that was burning and was shining and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.35 John was a lamp that gave off brilliant light. For a time you enjoyed the pleasure of his light.35 He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.35 He was the burning and shining lamp, and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
Witness of Works
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
36 "But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish-- the very works that I do-- testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me.36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.36 But I have something that testifies more favorably on my behalf than John's testimony. The tasks that the Father gave me to carry out, these tasks which I perform, testify on my behalf. They prove that the Father has sent me.36 But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John, for the works which the Father gave me to accomplish, the very works that I do, testify about me, that the Father has sent me.36 But I have the witness that is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has given me that I should complete them, the works themselves which I do, bear witness concerning me that the Father has sent me.
Witness of the Father
37 "And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form.37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.37 The Father who sent me testifies on my behalf. You have never heard his voice, and you have never seen his form.37 The Father himself, who sent me, has testified about me. You have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form.37 And the Father who has sent me himself has borne witness concerning me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor have seen his shape,
38 "You do not have His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent.38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.38 So you don't have the Father's message within you, because you don't believe in the person he has sent.38 You don't have his word living in you; because you don't believe him whom he sent.38 and ye have not his word abiding in you; for whom he hath sent, him ye do not believe.
Witness of the Scripture
39 "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me;39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.39 You study the Scriptures in detail because you think you have the source of eternal life in them. These Scriptures testify on my behalf.39 "You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify about me.39 Ye search the scriptures, for ye think that in them ye have life eternal, and they it is which bear witness concerning me;
40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.40 Yet, you don't want to come to me to get [eternal] life.40 Yet you will not come to me, that you may have life.40 and ye will not come to me that ye might have life.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
41 "I do not receive glory from men;41 I receive not honour from men.41 "I don't accept praise from humans.41 I don't receive glory from men.41 I do not receive glory from men,
42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.42 But I know what kind of people you are. You don't have any love for God.42 But I know you, that you don't have God's love in yourselves.42 but I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
43 "I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him.43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.43 I have come with the authority my Father has given me, but you don't accept me. If someone else comes with his own authority, you will accept him.43 I have come in my Father's name, and you don't receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him.43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not; if another come in his own name, him ye will receive.
44 "How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?44 How can you believe when you accept each other's praise and don't look for the praise that comes from the only God?44 How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and you don't seek the glory that comes from the only God?44 How can ye believe, who receive glory one of another, and seek not the glory which comes from God alone?
45 "Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope.45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.45 "Don't think that I will accuse you in the presence of the Father. Moses, the one you trust, is already accusing you.45 "Don't think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, even Moses, on whom you have set your hope.45 Think not that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one who accuses you, Moses, on whom ye trust;
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
46 "For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me.46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.46 If you really believed Moses, you would believe me. Moses wrote about me.46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me.46 for if ye had believed Moses, ye would have believed me, for he wrote of me.
47 "But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?47 If you don't believe what Moses wrote, how will you ever believe what I say?"47 But if you don't believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"47 But if ye do not believe his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
