Healing the Man Born Blind

1 As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth.1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.1 As Jesus walked along, he saw a man who had been born blind.1 As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth.1 And as he passed on, he saw a man blind from birth.
2 And His disciples asked Him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?"2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?2 His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, why was this man born blind? Did he or his parents sin?"2 His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind?
3 Jesus answered, "It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him.3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.3 Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned. Instead, he was born blind so that God could show what he can do for him.3 Jesus answered, "Neither did this man sin, nor his parents; but, that the works of God might be revealed in him.3 Jesus answered, Neither has this man sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God should be manifested in him.
4 "We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.4 We must do what the one who sent me wants us to do while it is day. The night when no one can do anything is coming.4 I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day. The night is coming, when no one can work.4 I must work the works of him that has sent me while it is day. The night is coming, when no one can work.
5 "While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world."5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.5 As long as I'm in the world, I'm light for the world."5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

6 When He had said this, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes,6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,6 After Jesus said this, he spit on the ground and mixed the spit with dirt. Then he smeared it on the man's eyes6 When he had said this, he spat on the ground, made mud with the saliva, anointed the blind man's eyes with the mud,6 Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud of the spittle, and put the mud, as ointment, on his eyes.
7 and said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam " (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing.7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.7 and told him, "Wash it off in the pool of Siloam." ([Siloam] means "sent.") The blind man washed it off and returned. He was able to see.7 and said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means "Sent"). So he went away, washed, and came back seeing.7 And he said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, which is interpreted, Sent. He went therefore and washed, and came seeing.
8 Therefore the neighbors, and those who previously saw him as a beggar, were saying, "Is not this the one who used to sit and beg?"8 The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?8 His neighbors and those who had previously seen him begging asked, "Isn't this the man who used to sit and beg?"8 The neighbors therefore, and those who saw that he was blind before, said, "Isn't this he who sat and begged?"8 The neighbours therefore, and those who used to see him before, that he was a beggar, said, Is not this he that was sitting and begging?
9 Others were saying, "This is he," still others were saying, "No, but he is like him." He kept saying, "I am the one."9 Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.9 Some of them said, "He's the one." Others said, "No, he isn't, but he looks like him." But the man himself said, "I am the one."9 Others were saying, "It is he." Still others were saying, "He looks like him." He said, "I am he."9 Some said, It is he; others said, No, but he is like him: he said, It is I.
10 So they were saying to him, "How then were your eyes opened?"10 Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?10 So they asked him, "How did you receive your sight?"10 They therefore were asking him, "How were your eyes opened?"10 They said therefore to him, How have thine eyes been opened?

11 He answered, "The man who is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, 'Go to Siloam and wash'; so I went away and washed, and I received sight."11 He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.11 He replied, "The man people call Jesus mixed some spit with dirt, smeared it on my eyes, and told me, 'Go to Siloam, and wash it off.' So I went there, washed it off, and received my sight."11 He answered, "A man called Jesus made mud, anointed my eyes, and said to me, 'Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash.' So I went away and washed, and I received sight."11 He answered and said, A man called Jesus made mud and anointed mine eyes, and said to me, Go to Siloam and wash: and having gone and washed, I saw.
12 They said to him, "Where is He?" He said, "I do not know."12 Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.12 They asked him, "Where is that man?" The man answered, "I don't know."12 Then they asked him, "Where is he?" He said, "I don't know."12 They said therefore to him, Where is he? He says, I do not know.
Controversy over the Man
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who was formerly blind.13 They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.13 Some people brought the man who had been blind to the Pharisees.13 They brought him who had been blind to the Pharisees.13 They bring him who was before blind to the Pharisees.
14 Now it was a Sabbath on the day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.14 And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.14 The day when Jesus mixed the spit and dirt and gave the man sight was a day of worship.14 It was a Sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.14 Now it was sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.
15 Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, "He applied clay to my eyes, and I washed, and I see."15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.15 So the Pharisees asked the man again how he received his sight. The man told the Pharisees, "He put a mixture of spit and dirt on my eyes. I washed it off, and now I can see."15 Again therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight. He said to them, "He put mud on my eyes, I washed, and I see."15 The Pharisees therefore also again asked him how he received his sight. And he said to them, He put mud upon mine eyes, and I washed, and I see.

16 Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, "This man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath." But others were saying, "How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?" And there was a division among them.16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.16 Some of the Pharisees said, "The man who did this is not from God because he doesn't follow the traditions for the day of worship." Other Pharisees asked, "How can a man who is a sinner perform miracles like these?" So the Pharisees were divided in their opinions.16 Some therefore of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, because he doesn't keep the Sabbath." Others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" There was division among them.16 Some of the Pharisees therefore said, This man is not of God, for he does not keep the sabbath. Others said, How can a sinful man perform such signs? And there was a division among them.
17 So they said to the blind man again, "What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?" And he said, "He is a prophet."17 They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.17 They asked the man who had been born blind another question: "What do you say about the man who gave you sight?" The man answered, "He's a prophet."17 Therefore they asked the blind man again, "What do you say about him, because he opened your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet."17 They say therefore again to the blind man, What dost thou say of him, that he has opened thine eyes? And he said, He is a prophet.
18 The Jews then did not believe it of him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight,18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.18 Until they talked to the man's parents, the Jews didn't believe that the man had been blind and had been given sight.18 The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight,18 The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him that he was blind and had received sight, until they had called the parents of him that had received sight.
19 and questioned them, saying, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?"19 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?19 They asked his parents, "Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? Why can he see now?"19 and asked them, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?"19 And they asked them saying, This is your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind: how then does he now see?
20 His parents answered them and said, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;20 His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:20 His parents replied, "We know that he's our son and that he was born blind.20 His parents answered them, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;20 His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;

21 but how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself."21 But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.21 But we don't know how he got his sight or who gave it to him. You'll have to ask him. He's old enough to answer for himself."21 but how he now sees, we don't know; or who opened his eyes, we don't know. He is of age. Ask him. 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed Him to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.22 These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.22 (His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews. The Jews had already agreed to put anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ out of the synagogue.22 His parents said these things because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if any man would confess him as Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.22 His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if any one confessed him to be the Christ, he should be excommunicated from the synagogue.
23 For this reason his parents said, "He is of age; ask him."23 Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.23 That's why his parents said, "You'll have to ask him. He's old enough.")23 Therefore his parents said, "He is of age. Ask him."23 On this account his parents said, He is of age: ask him.
24 So a second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, "Give glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner."24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.24 So once again the Jews called the man who had been blind. They told him, "Give glory to God. We know that this man who gave you sight is a sinner."24 So they called the man who was blind a second time, and said to him, "Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner."24 They called therefore a second time the man who had been blind, and said to him, Give glory to God: we know that this man is sinful.
25 He then answered, "Whether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see."25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.25 The man responded, "I don't know if he's a sinner or not. But I do know one thing. I used to be blind, but now I can see."25 He therefore answered, "I don't know if he is a sinner. One thing I do know: that though I was blind, now I see."25 He answered therefore, If he is sinful I know not. One thing I know, that, being blind before, now I see.

26 So they said to him, "What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?"26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?26 The Jews asked him, "What did he do to you? How did he give you sight?"26 They said to him again, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"26 And they said to him again, What did he do to thee? how opened he thine eyes?
27 He answered them, "I told you already and you did not listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?"27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?27 The man replied, "I've already told you, but you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear the story again? Do you want to become his disciples too?"27 He answered them, "I told you already, and you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don't also want to become his disciples, do you?"27 He answered them, I told you already and ye did not hear: why do ye desire to hear again? do ye also wish to become his disciples?
28 They reviled him and said, "You are His disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.28 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.28 The Jews yelled at him, "You're his disciple, but we're Moses' disciples.28 They insulted him and said, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.28 They railed at him, and said, Thou art his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.
29 "We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where He is from."29 We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but we don't know where this man came from."29 We know that God has spoken to Moses. But as for this man, we don't know where he comes from."29 We know that God spoke to Moses; but as to this man, we know not whence he is.
30 The man answered and said to them, "Well, here is an amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.30 The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.30 The man replied to them, "That's amazing! You don't know where he's from. Yet, he gave me sight.30 The man answered them, "How amazing! You don't know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.30 The man answered and said to them, Now in this is a wonderful thing, that ye do not know whence he is, and he has opened mine eyes.

31 "We know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him.31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.31 We know that God doesn't listen to sinners. Instead, he listens to people who are devout and who do what he wants.31 We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshipper of God, and does his will, he listens to him.31 But we know that God does not hear sinners; but if any one be God-fearing and do his will, him he hears.
32 "Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.32 Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.32 Since the beginning of time, no one has ever heard of anyone giving sight to a person born blind.32 Since the world began it has never been heard of that anyone opened the eyes of someone born blind.32 Since time was, it has not been heard that any one opened the eyes of one born blind.
33 "If this man were not from God, He could do nothing."33 If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.33 If this man were not from God, he couldn't do anything like that."33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing."33 If this man were not of God he would be able to do nothing.
34 They answered him, "You were born entirely in sins, and are you teaching us?" So they put him out.34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.34 The Jews answered him, "You were born full of sin. Do you think you can teach us?" Then they threw him out [of the synagogue].34 They answered him, "You were altogether born in sins, and do you teach us?" They threw him out.34 They answered and said to him, Thou hast been wholly born in sins, and thou teachest us? And they cast him out.
Jesus Affirms His Deity
35 Jesus heard that they had put him out, and finding him, He said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?35 Jesus heard that the Jews had thrown the man out [of the synagogue]. So when Jesus found the man, he asked him, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and finding him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of God?"35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him, he said to him, Thou, dost thou believe on the Son of God?

36 He answered, "Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?"36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?36 The man replied, "Sir, tell me who he is so that I can believe in him."36 He answered, "Who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him?"36 He answered and said, And who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him?
37 Jesus said to him, "You have both seen Him, and He is the one who is talking with you."37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.37 Jesus told him, "You've seen him. He is the person who is now talking with you."37 Jesus said to him, "You have both seen him, and it is he who speaks with you."37 And Jesus said to him, Thou hast both seen him, and he that speaks with thee is he.
38 And he said, "Lord, I believe." And he worshiped Him.38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.38 The man bowed in front of Jesus and said, "I believe, Lord."38 He said, "Lord, I believe!" and he worshiped him.38 And he said, I believe, Lord: and he did him homage.
39 And Jesus said, "For judgment I came into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind."39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.39 Then Jesus said, "I have come into this world to judge: Blind people will be given sight, and those who can see will become blind."39 Jesus said, "I came into this world for judgment, that those who don't see may see; and that those who see may become blind."39 And Jesus said, For judgment am I come into this world, that they which see not may see, and they which see may become blind.
40 Those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and said to Him, "We are not blind too, are we?"40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?40 Some Pharisees who were with Jesus heard this. So they asked him, "Do you think we're blind?"40 Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said to him, "Are we also blind?"40 And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, Are we blind also?

41 Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but since you say, 'We see,' your sin remains.41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.41 Jesus told them, "If you were blind, you wouldn't be sinners. But now you say, 'We see,' so you continue to be sinners.41 Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, 'We see.'
