5 A wise man will hear and increase in learning, And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel,5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:5 a wise person will listen and continue to learn, and an understanding person will gain direction-5 that the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel:5 He that is wise will hear, and will increase learning; and the intelligent will gain wise counsels:
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
6 To understand a proverb and a figure, The words of the wise and their riddles.6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.6 to understand a proverb and a clever saying, the words of wise people and their riddles.6 to understand a proverb, and parables, the words and riddles of the wise.6 to understand a proverb and an allegory, the words of the wise and their enigmas.
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. Stubborn fools despise wisdom and discipline.7 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.7 The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge: fools despise wisdom and instruction.
The Enticement of Sinners
8 Hear, my son, your father's instruction And do not forsake your mother's teaching;8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:8 My son, listen to your father's discipline, and do not neglect your mother's teachings,8 My son, listen to your father's instruction, and don't forsake your mother's teaching:8 Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother;
9 Indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head And ornaments about your neck.9 For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.9 because discipline and teachings are a graceful garland on your head and a [golden] chain around your neck.9 for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck.9 for they shall be a garland of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
10 My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent.10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.10 My son, if sinners lure you, do not go along.10 My son, if sinners entice you, don't consent.10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent not.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
11 If they say, "Come with us, Let us lie in wait for blood, Let us ambush the innocent without cause;11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:11 If they say, "Come with us. Let's set an ambush to kill someone. Let's hide to ambush innocent people for fun.11 If they say, "Come with us, Let's lay in wait for blood; let's lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;
12 Let us swallow them alive like Sheol, Even whole, as those who go down to the pit;12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:12 We'll swallow them alive like the grave, like those in good health who go into the pit.12 let's swallow them up alive like Sheol, and whole, like those who go down into the pit.12 let us swallow them up alive as Sheol, and whole, as those that go down into the pit;
13 We will find all kinds of precious wealth, We will fill our houses with spoil;13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:13 We'll find all kinds of valuable possessions. We'll fill our homes with stolen goods.13 We'll find all valuable wealth. We'll fill our houses with spoil.13 we shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
14 Throw in your lot with us, We shall all have one purse,"14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:14 Join us. We'll split the loot equally."14 You shall cast your lot among us. We'll all have one purse."14 cast in thy lot among us; we will all have one purse:
15 My son, do not walk in the way with them. Keep your feet from their path,15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:15 My son, do not follow them in their way. Do not even set foot on their path,15 My son, don't walk in the way with them. Keep your foot from their path,15 my son, walk not in the way with them, keep back thy foot from their path;
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
16 For their feet run to evil And they hasten to shed blood.16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.16 because they rush to do evil and hurry to shed blood.16 for their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood.16 for their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.
17 Indeed, it is useless to spread the baited net In the sight of any bird;17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.17 It does no good to spread a net within the sight of any bird.17 For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird:17 For in vain the net is spread in the sight of anything which hath wings.
18 But they lie in wait for their own blood; They ambush their own lives.18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.18 But these people set an ambush for their own murder. They go into hiding only to lose their lives.18 but these lay wait for their own blood. They lurk secretly for their own lives.18 And these lay wait for their own blood; they lurk secretly for their own lives.
19 So are the ways of everyone who gains by violence; It takes away the life of its possessors.19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.19 This is what happens to everyone who is greedy for unjust gain. Greed takes away his life.19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain. It takes away the life of its owners.19 So are the paths of every one that is greedy of gain: it taketh away the life of its possessors.
Wisdom Warns
20 Wisdom shouts in the street, She lifts her voice in the square;20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:20 Wisdom sings her song in the streets. In the public squares she raises her voice.20 Wisdom calls aloud in the street. She utters her voice in the public squares.20 Wisdom crieth without; she raiseth her voice in the broadways;
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
21 At the head of the noisy streets she cries out; At the entrance of the gates in the city she utters her sayings:21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,21 At the corners of noisy streets she calls out. At the entrances to the city she speaks her words,21 She calls at the head of noisy places. At the entrance of the city gates, she utters her words:21 she calleth in the chief place of concourse, in the entry of the gates; in the city she uttereth her words:
22 "How long, O naive ones, will you love being simple-minded? And scoffers delight themselves in scoffing And fools hate knowledge?22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?22 "How long will you gullible people love being so gullible? How long will you mockers find joy in your mocking? How long will you fools hate knowledge?22 "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?22 How long, simple ones, will ye love simpleness, and scorners take pleasure in their scorning, and the foolish hate knowledge?
23 "Turn to my reproof, Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.23 "Turn to me when I warn you. I will generously pour out my spirit for you. I will make my words known to you.23 Turn at my reproof. Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you. I will make known my words to you.23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour forth my spirit unto you, I will make known to you my words.
24 "Because I called and you refused, I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention;24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;24 "I called, and you refused to listen. I stretched out my hands to you, and no one paid attention.24 Because I have called, and you have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one has paid attention;24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one regarded;
25 And you neglected all my counsel And did not want my reproof;25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:25 You ignored all my advice. You did not want me to warn you.25 but you have ignored all my counsel, and wanted none of my reproof;25 and ye have rejected all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
26 I will also laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your dread comes,26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;26 I will laugh at your calamity. I will make fun of you when panic strikes you,26 I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you;26 I also will laugh in your calamity, I will mock when your fear cometh;
27 When your dread comes like a storm And your calamity comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you.27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.27 when panic strikes you like a violent storm, when calamity strikes you like a wind storm, when trouble and anguish come to you.27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come on you.27 when your fear cometh as sudden destruction, and your calamity cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come upon you:
28 "Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently but they will not find me,28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:28 "They will call to me at that time, but I will not answer. They will look for me, but they will not find me,28 Then will they call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me;28 then will they call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me early, and shall not find me.
29 Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the LORD.29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:29 because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD.29 because they hated knowledge, and didn't choose the fear of Yahweh.29 Because they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of Jehovah;
30 "They would not accept my counsel, They spurned all my reproof.30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.30 They refused my advice. They despised my every warning.30 They wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof.30 they would none of my counsel, they despised all my reproof:
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
31 "So they shall eat of the fruit of their own way And be satiated with their own devices.31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.31 They will eat the fruit of their lifestyle. They will be stuffed with their own schemes.31 Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own schemes.31 therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their way, and be filled with their own devices.
32 "For the waywardness of the naive will kill them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them.32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.32 "Gullible people kill themselves because of their turning away. Fools destroy themselves because of their indifference.32 For the backsliding of the simple will kill them. The careless ease of fools will destroy them.32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of the foolish shall cause them to perish.
33 "But he who listens to me shall live securely And will be at ease from the dread of evil."33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.33 But whoever listens to me will live without worry and will be free from the dread of disaster."33 But whoever listens to me will dwell securely, and will be at ease, without fear of harm."33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be at rest from fear of evil.
