Contrast the Upright and the Wicked
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
1 A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, But a just weight is His delight.1 A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.1 Dishonest scales are disgusting to the LORD, but accurate weights are pleasing to him.1 A false balance is an abomination to Yahweh, but accurate weights are his delight.1 A false balance is an abomination to Jehovah; but a just weight is his delight.
2 When pride comes, then comes dishonor, But with the humble is wisdom.2 When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.2 Arrogance comes, then comes shame, but wisdom remains with humble people.2 When pride comes, then comes shame, but with humility comes wisdom.2 When pride cometh, then cometh shame; but with the lowly is wisdom.
3 The integrity of the upright will guide them, But the crookedness of the treacherous will destroy them.3 The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.3 Integrity guides decent people, but hypocrisy leads treacherous people to ruin.3 The integrity of the upright shall guide them, but the perverseness of the treacherous shall destroy them.3 The integrity of the upright guideth them; but the crookedness of the unfaithful destroyeth them.
4 Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, But righteousness delivers from death.4 Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.4 Riches are of no help on the day of fury, but righteousness saves from death.4 Riches don't profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.4 Wealth profiteth not in the day of wrath; but righteousness delivereth from death.
5 The righteousness of the blameless will smooth his way, But the wicked will fall by his own wickedness.5 The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.5 The righteousness of innocent people makes their road smooth, but wicked people fall by their own wickedness.5 The righteousness of the blameless will direct his way, but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.5 The righteousness of the perfect maketh plain his way; but the wicked falleth by his own wickedness.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
6 The righteousness of the upright will deliver them, But the treacherous will be caught by their own greed.6 The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.6 Decent people are saved by their righteousness, but treacherous people are trapped by their own greed.6 The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them, but the unfaithful will be trapped by evil desires.6 The righteousness of the upright delivereth them; but the treacherous are taken in their own craving.
7 When a wicked man dies, his expectation will perish, And the hope of strong men perishes.7 When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth.7 At the death of a wicked person, hope vanishes. Moreover, his confidence in strength vanishes.7 When a wicked man dies, hope perishes, and expectation of power comes to nothing.7 When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish; and the hope of evil men perisheth.
8 The righteous is delivered from trouble, But the wicked takes his place.8 The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.8 A righteous person is rescued from trouble, and a wicked person takes his place.8 A righteous person is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked takes his place.8 The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.
9 With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor, But through knowledge the righteous will be delivered.9 An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.9 With his talk a godless person can ruin his neighbor, but righteous people are rescued by knowledge.9 With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor, but the righteous will be delivered through knowledge.9 With his mouth a hypocrite destroyeth his neighbour; but through knowledge are the righteous delivered.
10 When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices, And when the wicked perish, there is joyful shouting.10 When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.10 When righteous people prosper, a city is glad. When wicked people die, there are songs of joy.10 When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices. When the wicked perish, there is shouting.10 When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth; and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
11 By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, But by the mouth of the wicked it is torn down.11 By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.11 With the blessing of decent people a city is raised up, but by the words of wicked people, it is torn down.11 By the blessing of the upright, the city is exalted, but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.11 By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted; but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
12 He who despises his neighbor lacks sense, But a man of understanding keeps silent.12 He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.12 A person who despises a neighbor has no sense, but a person who has understanding keeps quiet.12 One who despises his neighbor is void of wisdom, but a man of understanding holds his peace.12 He that despiseth his neighbour is void of heart; but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.
13 He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets, But he who is trustworthy conceals a matter.13 A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.13 Whoever gossips gives away secrets, but whoever is trustworthy in spirit can keep a secret.13 One who brings gossip betrays a confidence, but one who is of a trustworthy spirit is one who keeps a secret.13 He that goeth about talebearing revealeth secrets; but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
14 Where there is no guidance the people fall, But in abundance of counselors there is victory.14 Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.14 A nation will fall when there is no direction, but with many advisers there is victory.14 Where there is no wise guidance, the nation falls, but in the multitude of counselors there is victory.14 Where no advice is, the people fall; but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
15 He who is guarantor for a stranger will surely suffer for it, But he who hates being a guarantor is secure.15 He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.15 Whoever guarantees a stranger's loan will get into trouble, but whoever hates the closing of a deal remains secure.15 He who is collateral for a stranger will suffer for it, but he who refuses pledges of collateral is secure.15 It goeth ill with him that is surety for another; but he that hateth suretyship is secure.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
16 A gracious woman attains honor, And ruthless men attain riches.16 A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.16 A gracious woman wins respect, but ruthless men gain riches.16 A gracious woman obtains honor, but violent men obtain riches.16 A gracious woman retaineth honour; and the violent retain riches.
17 The merciful man does himself good, But the cruel man does himself harm.17 The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.17 A merciful person helps himself, but a cruel person hurts himself.17 The merciful man does good to his own soul, but he who is cruel troubles his own flesh.17 The merciful man doeth good to his own soul; but the cruel troubleth his own flesh.
18 The wicked earns deceptive wages, But he who sows righteousness gets a true reward.18 The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.18 A wicked person earns dishonest wages, but whoever spreads righteousness earns honest pay.18 Wicked people earn deceitful wages, but one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.18 The wicked worketh a deceitful work; but he that soweth righteousness hath a sure reward.
19 He who is steadfast in righteousness will attain to life, And he who pursues evil will bring about his own death.19 As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.19 As righteousness leads to life, so whoever pursues evil finds his own death.19 He who is truly righteous gets life. He who pursues evil gets death.19 As righteousness tendeth to life, so he that pursueth evil doeth it to his own death.
20 The perverse in heart are an abomination to the LORD, But the blameless in their walk are His delight.20 They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the LORD: but such as are upright in their way are his delight.20 Devious people are disgusting to the LORD, but he is delighted with those whose ways are innocent.20 Those who are perverse in heart are an abomination to Yahweh, but those whose ways are blameless are his delight.20 The perverse in heart are abomination to Jehovah; but they that are perfect in their way are his delight.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
21 Assuredly, the evil man will not go unpunished, But the descendants of the righteous will be delivered.21 Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.21 Certainly, an evil person will not go unpunished, but the descendants of righteous people will escape.21 Most certainly, the evil man will not be unpunished, but the seed of the righteous will be delivered.21 Hand for hand! an evil man shall not be held innocent; but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.
22 As a ring of gold in a swine's snout So is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion.22 As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.22 [Like] a gold ring in a pig's snout, [so] is a beautiful woman who lacks good taste.22 Like a gold ring in a pig's snout, is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion.22 A fair woman who is without discretion, is as a gold ring in a swine's snout.
23 The desire of the righteous is only good, But the expectation of the wicked is wrath.23 The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.23 The desire of righteous people ends only in good, but the hope of wicked people ends only in fury.23 The desire of the righteous is only good. The expectation of the wicked is wrath.23 The desire of the righteous is only good; the expectation of the wicked is wrath.
24 There is one who scatters, and yet increases all the more, And there is one who withholds what is justly due, and yet it results only in want.24 There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.24 One person spends freely and yet grows richer, while another holds back what he owes and yet grows poorer.24 There is one who scatters, and increases yet more. There is one who withholds more than is appropriate, but gains poverty.24 There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is right, but it tendeth only to want.
25 The generous man will be prosperous, And he who waters will himself be watered.25 The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.25 A generous person will be made rich, and whoever satisfies others will himself be satisfied. 25 The liberal soul shall be made fat. He who waters shall be watered also himself.25 The liberal soul shall be made fat, and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
26 He who withholds grain, the people will curse him, But blessing will be on the head of him who sells it.26 He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.26 People will curse the one who hoards grain, but a blessing will be upon the head of the one who sells it.26 People curse someone who withholds grain, but blessing will be on the head of him who sells it.26 He that withholdeth corn, the people curse him; but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.
27 He who diligently seeks good seeks favor, But he who seeks evil, evil will come to him.27 He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.27 Whoever eagerly seeks good searches for good will, but whoever looks for evil finds it.27 He who diligently seeks good seeks favor, but he who searches after evil, it shall come to him.27 He that is earnest after good seeketh favour; but he that searcheth for mischief, it shall come upon him.
28 He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the righteous will flourish like the green leaf.28 He that trusteth in his riches shall fall; but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.28 Whoever trusts his riches will fall, but righteous people will flourish like a green leaf.28 He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous shall flourish as the green leaf.28 He that trusteth in his riches shall fall; but the righteous shall flourish as a leaf.
29 He who troubles his own house will inherit wind, And the foolish will be servant to the wisehearted.29 He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.29 Whoever brings trouble upon his family inherits [only] wind, and that stubborn fool becomes a slave to the wise in heart.29 He who troubles his own house shall inherit the wind. The foolish shall be servant to the wise of heart.29 He that troubleth his own house shall inherit wind; and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.
30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who is wise wins souls.30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.30 The fruit of a righteous person is a tree of life, and a winner of souls is wise.30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life. He who is wise wins souls.30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and the wise winneth souls.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
31 If the righteous will be rewarded in the earth, How much more the wicked and the sinner!31 Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.31 If the righteous person is rewarded on earth, how much more the wicked person and the sinner!31 Behold, the righteous shall be repaid in the earth; how much more the wicked and the sinner!31 Behold, the righteous shall be requited on the earth: how much more the wicked and the sinner.
