Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; Preserve my life from dread of the enemy. | 1 Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy. | 1 [For the choir director; a psalm by David.] Hear my voice, O God, when I complain. Protect my life from a terrifying enemy. | 1 Hear my voice, God, in my complaint. Preserve my life from fear of the enemy. | 1 {To the chief Musician. A Psalm of David.} Hear, O God, my voice in my plaint; preserve my life from fear of the enemy: | 2 Hide me from the secret counsel of evildoers, From the tumult of those who do iniquity, | 2 Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity: | 2 Hide me from the secret plots of criminals, from the mob of troublemakers. | 2 Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked, from the noisy crowd of the ones doing evil; | 2 Hide me from the secret counsel of evil-doers, from the tumultuous crowd of the workers of iniquity, | 3 Who have sharpened their tongue like a sword. They aimed bitter speech as their arrow, | 3 Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words: | 3 They sharpen their tongues like swords. They aim bitter words like arrows | 3 who sharpen their tongue like a sword, and aim their arrows, deadly words, | 3 Who have sharpened their tongue like a sword, and have aimed their arrow, a bitter word; | 4 To shoot from concealment at the blameless; Suddenly they shoot at him, and do not fear. | 4 That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not. | 4 to shoot at innocent people from their hiding places. They shoot at them suddenly, without any fear. | 4 to shoot innocent men from ambushes. They shoot at him suddenly and fearlessly. | 4 That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not. | 5 They hold fast to themselves an evil purpose; They talk of laying snares secretly; They say, "Who can see them?" | 5 They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them? | 5 They encourage one another in their evil plans. | 6 They devise injustices, saying, "We are ready with a well-conceived plot"; For the inward thought and the heart of a man are deep. | 6 They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep. | 6 They search for the perfect crime and say, "We have perfected a foolproof scheme!" Human nature and the human heart are a mystery! | 6 They plot injustice, saying, "We have made a perfect plan!" Surely man's mind and heart are cunning. | 6 They devise iniquities: We have it ready, the plan is diligently sought out. And each one's inward thought and heart is deep. | 7 But God will shoot at them with an arrow; Suddenly they will be wounded. | 7 But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded. | 7 But God will shoot them with an arrow. Suddenly, they will be struck dead. | 7 But God will shoot at them. They will be suddenly struck down with an arrow. | 7 But God will shoot an arrow at them: suddenly are they wounded; | 8 So they will make him stumble; Their own tongue is against them; All who see them will shake the head. | 8 So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away. | 8 They will trip over their own tongues. Everyone who sees them will shake his head. | 8 Their own tongues shall ruin them. All who see them will shake their heads. | 8 By their own tongue they are made to fall over one another: all that see them shall flee away. | 9 Then all men will fear, And they will declare the work of God, And will consider what He has done. | 9 And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing. | 9 Everyone will be afraid and conclude, "This is an act of God!" They will learn from what he has done. | 9 All mankind shall be afraid. They shall declare the work of God, and shall wisely ponder what he has done. | 9 And all men shall fear, and shall declare God's doing; and they shall wisely consider his work. | 10 The righteous man will be glad in the LORD and will take refuge in Him; And all the upright in heart will glory. | 10 The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory. | 10 Righteous people will find joy in the LORD and take refuge in him. Everyone whose motives are decent will be able to brag. | 10 The righteous shall be glad in Yahweh, and shall take refuge in him. All the upright in heart shall praise him! For the Chief Musician.
