Be Subject to Government | ||||
NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
1 Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. | 1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. | 1 Every person should obey the government in power. No government would exist if it hadn't been established by God. The governments which exist have been put in place by God. | 1 Let every soul be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God. | 1 Let every soul be subject to the authorities that are above him. For there is no authority except from God; and those that exist are set up by God. | 2 Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. | 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. | 2 Therefore, whoever resists the government opposes what God has established. Those who resist will bring punishment on themselves. | 2 Therefore he who resists the authority, withstands the ordinance of God; and those who withstand will receive to themselves judgment. | 2 So that he that sets himself in opposition to the authority resists the ordinance of God; and they who thus resist shall bring sentence of guilt on themselves. | 3 For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; | 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: | 3 People who do what is right don't have to be afraid of the government. But people who do what is wrong should be afraid of it. Would you like to live without being afraid of the government? Do what is right, and it will praise you. | 3 For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. Do you desire to have no fear of the authority? Do that which is good, and you will have praise from the same, | 3 For rulers are not a terror to a good work, but to an evil one. Dost thou desire then not to be afraid of the authority? practise what is good, and thou shalt have praise from it; | 4 for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. | 4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. | 4 The government is God's servant working for your good. But if you do what is wrong, you should be afraid. The government has the right to carry out the death sentence. It is God's servant, an avenger to execute God's anger on anyone who does what is wrong. | 4 for he is a servant of God to you for good. But if you do that which is evil, be afraid, for he doesn't bear the sword in vain; for he is a servant of God, an avenger for wrath to him who does evil. | 4 for it is God's minister to thee for good. But if thou practisest evil, fear; for it bears not the sword in vain; for it is God's minister, an avenger for wrath to him that does evil. | 5 Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience' sake. | 5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. | 5 Therefore, it is necessary for you to obey, not only because you're afraid of God's anger but also because of your own conscience. | 5 Therefore you need to be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience' sake. | 5 Wherefore it is necessary to be subject, not only on account of wrath, but also on account of conscience. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. | 6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. | 6 That is also why you pay your taxes. People in the government are God's servants while they do the work he has given them. | 6 For this reason you also pay taxes, for they are servants of God's service, attending continually on this very thing. | 6 For on this account ye pay tribute also; for they are God's officers, attending continually on this very thing. | 7 Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor. | 7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. | 7 Pay everyone whatever you owe them. If you owe taxes, pay them. If you owe tolls, pay them. If you owe someone respect, respect that person. If you owe someone honor, honor that person. | 7 Give therefore to everyone what you owe: taxes to whom taxes are due; customs to whom customs; respect to whom respect; honor to whom honor. | 7 Render to all their dues: to whom tribute is due, tribute; to whom custom, custom; to whom fear, fear; to whom honour, honour. | 8 Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. | 8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. | 8 Pay your debts as they come due. However, one debt you can never finish paying is the debt of love that you owe each other. The one who loves another person has fulfilled Moses' Teachings. | 8 Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. | 8 Owe no one anything, unless to love one another: for he that loves another has fulfilled the law. | 9 For this, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET," and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." | 9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. | 9 The commandments, "Never commit adultery; never murder; never steal; never have wrong desires," and every other commandment are summed up in this statement: "Love your neighbor as you love yourself." | 9 For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not give false testimony," "You shall not covet," and whatever other commandments there are, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." | 9 For, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not lust; and if there be any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. | 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. | 10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. | 10 Love never does anything that is harmful to a neighbor. Therefore, love fulfills Moses' Teachings. | 10 Love doesn't harm a neighbor. Love therefore is the fulfillment of the law. | 10 Love works no ill to its neighbour; love therefore is the whole law. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
11 Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. | 11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. | 11 You know the times [in which we are living]. It's time for you to wake up. Our salvation is nearer now than when we first became believers. | 11 Do this, knowing the time, that it is already time for you to awaken out of sleep, for salvation is now nearer to us than when we first believed. | 11 This also, knowing the time, that it is already time that we should be aroused out of sleep; for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. | 12 The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. | 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. | 12 The night is almost over, and the day is near. So we should get rid of the things that belong to the dark and take up the weapons that belong to the light. | 12 The night is far gone, and the day is near. Let's therefore throw off the works of darkness, and let's put on the armor of light. | 12 The night is far spent, and the day is near; let us cast away therefore the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. | 13 Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. | 13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. | 13 We should live decently, as people who live in the light of day. Wild parties, drunkenness, sexual immorality, promiscuity, rivalry, and jealousy cannot be part of our lives. | 13 Let us walk properly, as in the day; not in reveling and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and lustful acts, and not in strife and jealousy. | 13 As in the day, let us walk becomingly; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and lasciviousness, not in strife and emulation. | 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts. | 14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. | 14 Instead, live like the Lord Jesus Christ did, and forget about satisfying the desires of your sinful nature. | 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, for its lusts. | 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not take forethought for the flesh to fulfil its lusts. |
