1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, | 1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: | 1 Now that we have God's approval by faith, we have peace with God because of what our Lord Jesus Christ has done. | 1 Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ; | 1 Therefore having been justified on the principle of faith, we have peace towards God through our Lord Jesus Christ; | 2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. | 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. | 2 Through Christ we can approach God and stand in his favor. So we brag because of our confidence that we will receive glory from God. | 2 through whom we also have our access by faith into this grace in which we stand. We rejoice in hope of the glory of God. | 2 by whom we have also access by faith into this favour in which we stand, and we boast in hope of the glory of God. | 3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; | 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; | 3 But that's not all. We also brag when we are suffering. We know that suffering creates endurance, | 3 Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering works perseverance; | 3 And not only that, but we also boast in tribulations, knowing that tribulation works endurance; | 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; | 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: | 4 endurance creates character, and character creates confidence. | 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope: | 4 and endurance, experience; and experience, hope; | 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. | 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. | 5 We're not ashamed to have this confidence, because God's love has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. | 5 and hope doesn't disappoint us, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. | 5 and hope does not make ashamed, because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which has been given to us: | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. | 6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. | 6 Look at it this way: At the right time, while we were still helpless, Christ died for ungodly people. | 6 For while we were yet weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. | 6 for we being still without strength, in the due time Christ has died for the ungodly. | 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. | 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. | 7 Finding someone who would die for a godly person is rare. Maybe someone would have the courage to die for a good person. | 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man. Yet perhaps for a righteous person someone would even dare to die. | 7 For scarcely for the just man will one die, for perhaps for the good man some one might also dare to die; | 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. | 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. | 8 Christ died for us while we were still sinners. This demonstrates God's love for us. | 8 But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. | 8 but God commends his love to us, in that, we being still sinners, Christ has died for us. | 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. | 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. | 9 Since Christ's blood has now given us God's approval, we are even more certain that Christ will save us from God's anger. | 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we will be saved from God's wrath through him. | 9 Much rather therefore, having been now justified in the power of his blood, we shall be saved by him from wrath. | 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. | 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. | 10 If the death of his Son restored our relationship with God while we were still his enemies, we are even more certain that, because of this restored relationship, the life of his Son will save us. | 10 For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we will be saved by his life. | 10 For if, being enemies, we have been reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much rather, having been reconciled, we shall be saved in the power of his life. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
11 And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation. | 11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. | 11 In addition, our Lord Jesus Christ lets us continue to brag about God. After all, it is through Christ that we now have this restored relationship with God. | 11 Not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation. | 11 And not only that, but we are making our boast in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom now we have received the reconciliation. | 12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned-- | 12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: | 12 Sin came into the world through one person, and death came through sin. So death spread to everyone, because everyone sinned. | 12 Therefore, as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; and so death passed to all men, because all sinned. | 12 For this cause, even as by one man sin entered into the world, and by sin death; and thus death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: | 13 for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. | 13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. | 13 Sin was in the world before there were any laws. But no record of sin can be kept when there are no laws. | 13 For until the law, sin was in the world; but sin is not charged when there is no law. | 13 (for until law sin was in the world; but sin is not put to account when there is no law; | 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. | 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. | 14 Yet, death ruled from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin in the same way Adam did when he disobeyed. Adam is an image of the one who would come. | 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those whose sins weren't like Adam's disobedience, who is a foreshadowing of him who was to come. | 14 but death reigned from Adam until Moses, even upon those who had not sinned in the likeness of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him to come. | 15 But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many. | 15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. | 15 There is no comparison between [God's] gift and [Adam's] failure. If humanity died as the result of one person's failure, it is certainly true that God's kindness and the gift given through the kindness of one person, Jesus Christ, have been showered on humanity. | 15 But the free gift isn't like the trespass. For if by the trespass of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God, and the gift by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many. | 15 But shall not the act of favour be as the offence? For if by the offence of one the many have died, much rather has the grace of God, and the free gift in grace, which is by the one man Jesus Christ, abounded unto the many. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
16 The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification. | 16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. | 16 There is also no comparison between [God's] gift and the one who sinned. The verdict which followed one person's failure condemned everyone. But, even after many failures, the gift brought God's approval. | 16 The gift is not as through one who sinned: for the judgment came by one to condemnation, but the free gift came of many trespasses to justification. | 16 And shall not as by one that has sinned be the gift? For the judgment was of one to condemnation, but the act of favour, of many offences unto justification. | 17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. | 17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) | 17 It is certain that death ruled because of one person's failure. It's even more certain that those who receive God's overflowing kindness and the gift of his approval will rule in life because of one person, Jesus Christ. | 17 For if by the trespass of the one, death reigned through the one; so much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ. | 17 For if by the offence of the one death reigned by the one, much rather shall those who receive the abundance of grace, and of the free gift of righteousness, reign in life by the one Jesus Christ:) | 18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. | 18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. | 18 Therefore, everyone was condemned through one failure, and everyone received God's life-giving approval through one verdict. | 18 So then as through one trespass, all men were condemned; even so through one act of righteousness, all men were justified to life. | 18 so then as it was by one offence towards all men to condemnation, so by one righteousness towards all men for justification of life. | 19 For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. | 19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. | 19 Clearly, through one person's disobedience humanity became sinful, and through one person's obedience humanity will receive God's approval. | 19 For as through the one man's disobedience many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one, many will be made righteous. | 19 For as indeed by the disobedience of the one man the many have been constituted sinners, so also by the obedience of the one the many will be constituted righteous. | 20 The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, | 20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: | 20 Laws were added to increase the failure. But where sin increased, God's kindness increased even more. | 20 The law came in besides, that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace abounded more exceedingly; | 20 But law came in, in order that the offence might abound; but where sin abounded grace has overabounded, | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. | 21 As sin ruled by bringing death, God's kindness would rule by bringing us his approval. This results in our living forever because of Jesus Christ our Lord. | 21 that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 21 in order that, even as sin has reigned in the power of death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. |
