1 I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit,1 I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,1 As a Christian, I'm telling you the truth. I'm not lying. The Holy Spirit, along with my own thoughts, supports me in this.1 I tell the truth in Christ. 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart.2 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.2 I have deep sorrow and endless heartache.2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing pain in my heart.2 that I have great grief and uninterrupted pain in my heart,
3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh,3 For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:3 I wish I could be condemned and cut off from Christ for the sake of others who, like me, are Jewish by birth.3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brothers' sake, my relatives according to the flesh,3 for I have wished, I myself, to be a curse from the Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen, according to flesh;
4 who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises,4 Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;4 They are Israelites, God's adopted children. They have the Lord's glory, the pledges, Moses' Teachings, the true worship, and the promises.4 who are Israelites; whose is the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service, and the promises;4 who are Israelites; whose is the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the law-giving, and the service, and the promises;
5 whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.5 The Messiah is descended from their ancestors according to his human nature. The Messiah is God over everything, forever blessed. Amen.5 of whom are the fathers, and from whom is Christ as concerning the flesh, who is over all, God, blessed forever. Amen.5 whose are the fathers; and of whom, as according to flesh, is the Christ, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For they are not all Israel who are descended from Israel;6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:6 Now it is not as though God's word has failed. Clearly, not everyone descended from Israel is part of Israel6 But it is not as though the word of God has come to nothing. For they are not all Israel, that are of Israel.6 Not however as though the word of God had failed; for not all are Israel which are of Israel;
7 nor are they all children because they are Abraham's descendants, but: "THROUGH ISAAC YOUR DESCENDANTS WILL BE NAMED."7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.7 or a descendant of Abraham. However, [as Scripture says,] "Through Isaac your descendants will carry on your name."7 Neither, because they are Abraham's seed, are they all children. But, "In Isaac will your seed be called."7 nor because they are seed of Abraham are all children: but, In Isaac shall a seed be called to thee.
8 That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants.8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.8 This means that children born by natural descent [from Abraham] are not necessarily God's children. Instead, children born by the promise are considered Abraham's descendants.8 That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as a seed.8 That is, they that are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are reckoned as seed.
9 For this is the word of promise: "AT THIS TIME I WILL COME, AND SARAH SHALL HAVE A SON."9 For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son.9 For example, this is what the promise said, "I will come back at the right time, and Sarah will have a son."9 For this is a word of promise, "At the appointed time I will come, and Sarah will have a son."9 For this word is of promise, According to this time I will come, and there shall be a son to Sarah.
10 And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac;10 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;10 The same thing happened to Rebekah. Rebekah became pregnant by our ancestor Isaac.10 Not only so, but Rebecca also conceived by one, by our father Isaac.10 And not only that, but Rebecca having conceived by one, Isaac our father,

11 for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God's purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls,11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)11 Before the children had been born or had done anything good or bad, Rebekah was told that the older child would serve the younger one. This was said to Rebekah so that God's plan would remain a matter of his choice,11 For being not yet born, neither having done anything good or bad, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him who calls,11 the children indeed being not yet born, or having done anything good or worthless (that the purpose of God according to election might abide, not of works, but of him that calls),
12 it was said to her, "THE OLDER WILL SERVE THE YOUNGER."12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.12 a choice based on God's call and not on anything people do. 12 it was said to her, "The elder will serve the younger."12 it was said to her, The greater shall serve the less:
13 Just as it is written, "JACOB I LOVED, BUT ESAU I HATED."13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.13 The Scriptures say, "I loved Jacob, but I hated Esau."13 Even as it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."13 according as it is written, I have loved Jacob, and I have hated Esau.
14 What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be!14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.14 What can we say-that God is unfair? That's unthinkable!14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? May it never be!14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? Far be the thought.
15 For He says to Moses, "I WILL HAVE MERCY ON WHOM I HAVE MERCY, AND I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON WHOM I HAVE COMPASSION."15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.15 For example, God said to Moses, "I will be kind to anyone I want to. I will be merciful to anyone I want to."15 For he said to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion."15 For he says to Moses, I will shew mercy to whom I will shew mercy, and I will feel compassion for whom I will feel compassion.

16 So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy.16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.16 Therefore, God's choice does not depend on a person's desire or effort, but on God's mercy.16 So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who has mercy.16 So then it is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shews mercy.
17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, "FOR THIS VERY PURPOSE I RAISED YOU UP, TO DEMONSTRATE MY POWER IN YOU, AND THAT MY NAME MIGHT BE PROCLAIMED THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE EARTH."17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.17 For example, Scripture says to Pharaoh, "I put you here for this reason: to demonstrate my power through you and to spread my name throughout the earth."17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, "For this very purpose I caused you to be raised up, that I might show in you my power, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth."17 For the scripture says to Pharaoh, For this very thing I have raised thee up from amongst men, that I might thus shew in thee my power, and so that my name should be declared in all the earth.
18 So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires.18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.18 Therefore, if God wants to be kind to anyone, he will be. If he wants to make someone stubborn, he will.18 So then, he has mercy on whom he desires, and he hardens whom he desires.18 So then, to whom he will he shews mercy, and whom he will he hardens.
19 You will say to me then, "Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?"19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?19 You may ask me, "Why does God still find fault with anyone? Who can resist whatever God wants to do?"19 You will say then to me, "Why does he still find fault? For who withstands his will?"19 Thou wilt say to me then, Why does he yet find fault? for who resists his purpose?
20 On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, "Why did you make me like this," will it?20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?20 Who do you think you are to talk back to God like that? Can an object that was made say to its maker, "Why did you make me like this?"20 But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed ask him who formed it, "Why did you make me like this?"20 Aye, but thou, O man, who art thou that answerest again to God? Shall the thing formed say to him that has formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?

21 Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use?21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?21 A potter has the right to do whatever he wants with his clay. He can make something for a special occasion or something for everyday use from the same lump of clay.21 Or hasn't the potter a right over the clay, from the same lump to make one part a vessel for honor, and another for dishonor?21 Or has not the potter authority over the clay, out of the same lump to make one vessel to honour, and another to dishonour?
22 What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction?22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:22 If God wants to demonstrate his anger and reveal his power, he can do it. But can't he be extremely patient with people who are objects of his anger because they are headed for destruction?22 What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath made for destruction,22 And if God, minded to shew his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much long-suffering vessels of wrath fitted for destruction;
23 And He did so to make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory,23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,23 Can't God also reveal the riches of his glory to people who are objects of his mercy and who he had already prepared for glory?23 and that he might make known the riches of his glory on vessels of mercy, which he prepared beforehand for glory,23 and that he might make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy, which he had before prepared for glory,
24 even us, whom He also called, not from among Jews only, but also from among Gentiles.24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?24 This is what God did for us whom he called-whether we are Jews or not.24 us, whom he also called, not from the Jews only, but also from the Gentiles?24 us, whom he has also called, not only from amongst the Jews, but also from amongst the nations?
25 As He says also in Hosea, "I WILL CALL THOSE WHO WERE NOT MY PEOPLE, 'MY PEOPLE,' AND HER WHO WAS NOT BELOVED, 'BELOVED.'"25 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.25 As God says in Hosea: "Those who are not my people I will call my people. Those who are not loved I will call my loved ones.25 As he says also in Hosea, "I will call them 'my people,' which were not my people; and her 'beloved,' who was not beloved."25 As he says also in Hosea, I will call not-my-people My people; and the-not-beloved Beloved.

26 "AND IT SHALL BE THAT IN THE PLACE WHERE IT WAS SAID TO THEM, 'YOU ARE NOT MY PEOPLE,' THERE THEY SHALL BE CALLED SONS OF THE LIVING GOD."26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.26 Wherever they were told, 'You are not my people,' they will be called children of the living God."26 "It will be that in the place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' There they will be called 'children of the living God.'"26 And it shall be, in the place where it was said to them, Ye are not my people, there shall they be called Sons of the living God.
27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, "THOUGH THE NUMBER OF THE SONS OF ISRAEL BE LIKE THE SAND OF THE SEA, IT IS THE REMNANT THAT WILL BE SAVED;27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:27 Isaiah also says about Israel: "Although the descendants of Israel are as numerous as the grains of sand on the seashore, only a few will be saved.27 Isaiah cries concerning Israel, "If the number of the children of Israel are as the sand of the sea, it is the remnant who will be saved;27 But Esaias cries concerning Israel, Should the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, the remnant shall be saved:
28 FOR THE LORD WILL EXECUTE HIS WORD ON THE EARTH, THOROUGHLY AND QUICKLY."28 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.28 The Lord will carry out his sentence on the land, completely and decisively."28 for He will finish the work and cut it short in righteousness, because the LORD will make a short work upon the earth."28 for he is bringing the matter to an end, and cutting it short in righteousness; because a cutting short of the matter will the Lord accomplish upon the earth.
29 And just as Isaiah foretold, "UNLESS THE LORD OF SABAOTH HAD LEFT TO US A POSTERITY, WE WOULD HAVE BECOME LIKE SODOM, AND WOULD HAVE RESEMBLED GOMORRAH."29 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.29 This is what Isaiah predicted: "If the Lord of Armies hadn't left us some descendants, we would have been like Sodom and Gomorrah."29 As Isaiah has said before, "Unless the Lord of Armies had left us a seed, we would have become like Sodom, and would have been made like Gomorrah."29 And according as Esaias said before, Unless the Lord of hosts had left us a seed, we had been as Sodom, and made like even as Gomorrha.
30 What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith;30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.30 So what can we say? We can say that non-Jewish people who were not trying to gain God's approval won his approval, an approval based on faith.30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, who didn't follow after righteousness, attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith;30 What then shall we say? That they of the nations, who did not follow after righteousness, have attained righteousness, but the righteousness that is on the principle of faith.

31 but Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law.31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.31 The people of Israel tried to gain God's approval by obeying Moses' Teachings, but they did not reach their goal.31 but Israel, following after a law of righteousness, didn't arrive at the law of righteousness.31 But Israel, pursuing after a law of righteousness, has not attained to that law.
32 Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone,32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;32 Why? They didn't rely on faith to gain God's approval, but they relied on their own efforts. They stumbled over the rock that trips people.32 Why? Because they didn't seek it by faith, but as it were by works of the law. They stumbled over the stumbling stone;32 Wherefore? Because it was not on the principle of faith, but as of works. They have stumbled at the stumblingstone,
33 just as it is written, "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED."33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.33 As Scripture says, "I am placing a rock in Zion that people trip over, a large rock that people find offensive. Whoever believes in him will not be ashamed."33 even as it is written, "Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and a rock of offense; and no one who believes in him will be disappointed."33 according as it is written, Behold, I place in Zion a stone of stumbling and rock of offence: and he that believes on him shall not be ashamed.
