The Unrighteous Steward

1 Now He was also saying to the disciples, "There was a rich man who had a manager, and this manager was reported to him as squandering his possessions.1 And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.1 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "A rich man had a business manager. The manager was accused of wasting the rich man's property.1 He also said to his disciples, "There was a certain rich man who had a manager. An accusation was made to him that this man was wasting his possessions.1 And he said also to his disciples, There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and he was accused to him as wasting his goods.
2 "And he called him and said to him, 'What is this I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management, for you can no longer be manager.'2 And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.2 So the rich man called for his manager and said to him, 'What's this I hear about you? Let me examine your books. It's obvious that you can't manage my property any longer.'2 He called him, and said to him, 'What is this that I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management, for you can no longer be manager.'2 And having called him, he said to him, What is this that I hear of thee? give the reckoning of thy stewardship, for thou canst be no longer steward.
3 "The manager said to himself, 'What shall I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig; I am ashamed to beg.3 Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed.3 "The manager thought, 'What should I do? My master is taking my job away from me. I'm not strong enough to dig, and I'm ashamed to beg.3 "The manager said within himself, 'What will I do, seeing that my lord is taking away the management position from me? I don't have strength to dig. I am ashamed to beg.3 And the steward said within himself, What shall I do; for my lord is taking the stewardship from me? I am not able to dig; I am ashamed to beg.
4 'I know what I shall do, so that when I am removed from the management people will welcome me into their homes.'4 I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.4 I know what I'll do so that people will welcome me into their homes when I've lost my job.'4 I know what I will do, so that when I am removed from management, they may receive me into their houses.'4 I know what I will do, that when I shall have been removed from the stewardship I may be received into their houses.
5 "And he summoned each one of his master's debtors, and he began saying to the first, 'How much do you owe my master?'5 So he called every one of his lord's debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord?5 "So the manager called for each one of his master's debtors. He said to the first, 'How much do you owe my master?'5 Calling each one of his lord's debtors to him, he said to the first, 'How much do you owe to my lord?'5 And having called to him each one of the debtors of his own lord, he said to the first, How much owest thou to my lord?

6 "And he said, 'A hundred measures of oil.' And he said to him, 'Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.'6 And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty.6 "The debtor replied, 'Eight hundred gallons of olive oil.' "The manager told him, 'Take my master's ledger. Quick! Sit down, and write "four hundred!"'6 He said, 'A hundred batos of oil.' He said to him, 'Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.'6 And he said, A hundred baths of oil. And he said to him, Take thy writing and sit down quickly and write fifty.
7 "Then he said to another, 'And how much do you owe?' And he said, 'A hundred measures of wheat.' He said to him, 'Take your bill, and write eighty.'7 Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore.7 "Then he asked another debtor, 'How much do you owe?' "The debtor replied, 'A thousand bushels of wheat.' "The manager told him, 'Take the ledger, and write "eight hundred!"'7 Then he said to another, 'How much do you owe?' He said, 'A hundred cors of wheat.' He said to him, 'Take your bill, and write eighty.'7 Then he said to another, And thou, how much dost thou owe? And he said, A hundred cors of wheat. And he says to him, Take thy writing and write eighty.
8 "And his master praised the unrighteous manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the sons of this age are more shrewd in relation to their own kind than the sons of light.8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.8 "The master praised the dishonest manager for being so clever. Worldly people are more clever than spiritually-minded people when it comes to dealing with others."8 "His lord commended the dishonest manager because he had done wisely, for the children of this world are, in their own generation, wiser than the children of the light.8 And the lord praised the unrighteous steward because he had done prudently. For the sons of this world are, for their own generation, more prudent than the sons of light.
9 "And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of the wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, they will receive you into the eternal dwellings.9 And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.9 [Jesus continued,] "I'm telling you that although wealth is often used in dishonest ways, you should use it to make friends for yourselves. When life is over, you will be welcomed into an eternal home.9 I tell you, make for yourselves friends by means of unrighteous mammon, so that when you fail, they may receive you into the eternal tents.9 And I say to you, Make to yourselves friends with the mammon of unrighteousness, that when it fails ye may be received into the eternal tabernacles.
10 "He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much.10 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.10 Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with a lot. Whoever is dishonest with very little is dishonest with a lot.10 He who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much. He who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.10 He that is faithful in the least is faithful also in much; and he that is unrighteous in the least is unrighteous also in much.

11 "Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of unrighteous wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you?11 If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?11 Therefore, if you can't be trusted with wealth that is often used dishonestly, who will trust you with wealth that is real?11 If therefore you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?11 If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who shall entrust to you the true?
12 "And if you have not been faithful in the use of that which is another's, who will give you that which is your own?12 And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own?12 If you can't be trusted with someone else's wealth, who will give you your own?12 If you have not been faithful in that which is another's, who will give you that which is your own?12 and if ye have not been faithful in that which is another's, who shall give to you your own?
13 "No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth."13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.13 "A servant cannot serve two masters. He will hate the first master and love the second, or he will be devoted to the first and despise the second. 15 And He said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God.15 And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.15 So Jesus said to them, "You try to justify your actions in front of people. But God knows what's in your hearts. What is important to humans is disgusting to God.15 He said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts. For that which is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.15 And he said to them, Ye are they who justify themselves before men, but God knows your hearts; for what amongst men is highly thought of is an abomination before God.

16 "The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John; since that time the gospel of the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it.16 The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.16 "Moses' Teachings and the Prophets were [in force] until the time of John. Since that time, people have been telling the Good News about the kingdom of God, and everyone is trying to force their way into it.16 The law and the prophets were until John. From that time the Good News of the Kingdom of God is preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it.16 The law and the prophets were until John: from that time the glad tidings of the kingdom of God are announced, and every one forces his way into it.
17 "But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter of the Law to fail.17 And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.17 It is easier for the earth and the heavens to disappear than to drop a comma from Moses' Teachings.17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one tiny stroke of a pen in the law to fall.17 But it is easier that the heaven and the earth should pass away than that one tittle of the law should fail.
18 "Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery.18 Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.18 "Any man who divorces his wife to marry another woman is committing adultery. The man who marries a woman divorced in this way is committing adultery.18 Everyone who divorces his wife, and marries another, commits adultery. He who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery.18 Every one who puts away his wife and marries another commits adultery; and every one that marries one put away from a husband commits adultery.
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 "Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day.19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:19 "There was a rich man who wore expensive clothes. Every day was like a party to him.19 "Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, living in luxury every day.19 Now there was a rich man and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, making good cheer in splendour every day.
20 "And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores,20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,20 There was also a beggar named Lazarus who was regularly brought to the gate of the rich man's house.20 A certain beggar, named Lazarus, was laid at his gate, full of sores,20 And there was a poor man, by name Lazarus, who was laid at his gateway full of sores,

21 and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man's table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores.21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.21 Lazarus would have eaten any scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Lazarus was covered with sores, and dogs would lick them. 21 and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table. 22 "Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;22 "One day the beggar died, and the angels carried him to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried.22 It happened that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried.22 And it came to pass that the poor man died, and that he was carried away by the angels into the bosom of Abraham. And the rich man also died and was buried.
23 "In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom.23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.23 He went to hell, where he was constantly tortured. As he looked up, in the distance he saw Abraham and Lazarus.23 In Hades, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far off, and Lazarus at his bosom.23 And in hades lifting up his eyes, being in torments, he sees Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 "And he cried out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.'24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.24 He yelled, 'Father Abraham! Have mercy on me! Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool off my tongue. I am suffering in this fire.'24 He cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue! For I am in anguish in this flame.'24 And he crying out said, Father Abraham, have compassion on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering in this flame.
25 "But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony.25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.25 "Abraham replied, 'Remember, my child, that you had a life filled with good times, while Lazarus' life was filled with misery. Now he has peace here, while you suffer.25 "But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you, in your lifetime, received your good things, and Lazarus, in the same way, bad things. But now here he is comforted and you are in anguish.25 But Abraham said, Child, recollect that thou hast fully received thy good things in thy lifetime, and likewise Lazarus evil things. But now he is comforted here, and thou art in suffering.

26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.'26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.26 Besides, a wide area separates us. People couldn't cross it in either direction even if they wanted to.'26 Besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that those who want to pass from here to you are not able, and that none may cross over from there to us.'26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm is fixed, so that those who desire to pass hence to you cannot, nor do they who desire to cross from there pass over unto us.
27 "And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father's house--27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:27 "The rich man responded, 'Then I ask you, Father, to send Lazarus back to my father's home.27 "He said, 'I ask you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house;27 And he said, I beseech thee then, father, that thou wouldest send him to the house of my father,
28 for I have five brothers-- in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.28 I have five brothers. He can warn them so that they won't end up in this place of torture.'28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, so they won't also come into this place of torment.'28 for I have five brothers, so that he may earnestly testify to them, that they also may not come to this place of torment.
29 "But Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.'29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.29 "Abraham replied, 'They have Moses' [Teachings] and the Prophets. Your brothers should listen to them!'29 "But Abraham said to him, 'They have Moses and the prophets. 30 "But he said, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!'30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.30 "The rich man replied, 'No, Father Abraham! If someone comes back to them from the dead, they will turn to God and change the way they think and act.'30 "He said, 'No, father Abraham, but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.'30 But he said, Nay, father Abraham, but if one from the dead should go to them, they will repent.

31 "But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.'"31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.31 "Abraham answered him, 'If they won't listen to Moses' [Teachings] and the Prophets, they won't be persuaded even if someone comes back to life.'"31 "He said to him, 'If they don't listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if one rises from the dead.'"31 And he said to him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, not even if one rise from among the dead will they be persuaded.
