The Visit of the Magi | ||||
NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, | 1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, | 1 Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea when Herod was king. After Jesus' birth wise men from the east arrived in Jerusalem. | 1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, | 1 Now Jesus having been born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, behold magi from the east arrived at Jerusalem, saying, | 2 "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him." | 2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. | 2 They asked, "Where is the one who was born to be the king of the Jews? We saw his star rising and have come to worship him." | 2 "Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him." | 2 Where is the king of the Jews that has been born? for we have seen his star in the east, and have come to do him homage. | 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. | 3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. | 3 When King Herod and all Jerusalem heard about this, they became disturbed. | 3 When King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. | 3 But Herod the king having heard of it, was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; | 4 Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. | 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. | 4 He called together all the chief priests and scribes and tried to find out from them where the Messiah was supposed to be born. | 4 Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born. | 4 and, assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ should be born. | 5 They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet: | 5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, | 5 They told him, "In Bethlehem in Judea. The prophet wrote about this: | 5 They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is written through the prophet, | 5 And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judaea; for thus it is written through the prophet: | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
6 'AND YOU, BETHLEHEM, LAND OF JUDAH, ARE BY NO MEANS LEAST AMONG THE LEADERS OF JUDAH; FOR OUT OF YOU SHALL COME FORTH A RULER WHO WILL SHEPHERD MY PEOPLE ISRAEL.'" | 6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. | 6 Bethlehem in the land of Judah, you are by no means least among the leaders of Judah. A leader will come from you. He will shepherd my people Israel." | 6 'You Bethlehem, land of Judah, are in no way least among the princes of Judah: for out of you shall come forth a governor, who shall shepherd my people, Israel.'" | 6 And thou Bethlehem, land of Juda, art in no wise the least among the governors of Juda; for out of thee shall go forth a leader who shall shepherd my people Israel. | 7 Then Herod secretly called the magi and determined from them the exact time the star appeared. | 7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. | 7 Then Herod secretly called the wise men and found out from them exactly when the star had appeared. | 7 Then Herod secretly called the wise men, and learned from them exactly what time the star appeared. | 7 Then Herod, having secretly called the magi, inquired of them accurately the time of the star that was appearing; | 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him." | 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. | 8 As he sent them to Bethlehem, he said, "Go and search carefully for the child. When you have found him, report to me so that I may go and worship him too." | 8 He sent them to Bethlehem, and said, "Go and search diligently for the young child. When you have found him, bring me word, so that I also may come and worship him." | 8 and having sent them to Bethlehem, said, Go, search out accurately concerning the child, and when ye shall have found him bring me back word, so that I also may come and do him homage. | 9 After hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was. | 9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. | 9 After they had heard the king, they started out. The star they had seen rising led them until it stopped over the place where the child was. | 9 They, having heard the king, went their way; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, until it came and stood over where the young child was. | 9 And they having heard the king went their way; and lo, the star, which they had seen in the east, went before them until it came and stood over the place where the little child was. | 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. | 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. | 10 They were overwhelmed with joy to see the star. | 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. | 10 And when they saw the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. | 11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh. | 11 When they entered the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary. So they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. | 11 They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Opening their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. | 11 And having come into the house they saw the little child with Mary his mother, and falling down did him homage. And having opened their treasures, they offered to him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. | 12 And having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way. | 12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. | 12 God warned them in a dream not to go back to Herod. So they left for their country by another road. | 12 Being warned in a dream that they shouldn't return to Herod, they went back to their own country another way. | 12 And being divinely instructed in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. | The Flight to Egypt |
13 Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him." | 13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. | 13 After they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. The angel said to him, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, because Herod intends to search for the child and kill him." | 13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him." | 13 Now, they having departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appears in a dream to Joseph, saying, Arise, take to thee the little child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there until I shall tell thee; for Herod will seek the little child to destroy it. | 14 So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt. | 14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: | 14 Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and left for Egypt that night. | 14 He arose and took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt, | 14 And, having arisen, he took to him the little child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt. | 15 He remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "OUT OF EGYPT I CALLED MY SON." | 15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. | 15 He stayed there until Herod died. What the Lord had spoken through the prophet came true: "I have called my son out of Egypt." | 15 and was there until the death of Herod; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called my son." | 15 And he was there until the death of Herod, that that might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. | Herod Slaughters Babies |

16 Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi. | 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men. | 16 When Herod saw that the wise men had tricked him, he became furious. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys two years old and younger in or near Bethlehem. This matched the exact time he had learned from the wise men. | 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was exceedingly angry, and sent out, and killed all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all the surrounding countryside, from two years old and under, according to the exact time which he had learned from the wise men. | 16 Then Herod, seeing that he had been mocked by the magi, was greatly enraged; and sent and slew all the boys which were in Bethlehem, and in all its borders, from two years and under, according to the time which he had accurately inquired from the magi. | 17 Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: | 17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, | 17 Then the words spoken through the prophet Jeremiah came true: | 17 Then that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying, | 17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremias the prophet, saying, | 18 "A VOICE WAS HEARD IN RAMAH, WEEPING AND GREAT MOURNING, RACHEL WEEPING FOR HER CHILDREN; AND SHE REFUSED TO BE COMFORTED, BECAUSE THEY WERE NO MORE." | 18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. | 18 "A sound was heard in Ramah, the sound of crying in bitter grief. Rachel was crying for her children. She refused to be comforted because they were dead." | 18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; she wouldn't be comforted, because they are no more." | 18 A voice has been heard in Rama, weeping, and great lamentation: Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. | 19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said, | 19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, | 19 After Herod was dead, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt. | 19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, | 19 But Herod having died, behold, an angel of the Lord appears in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, | 20 "Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child's life are dead." | 20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life. | 20 The angel said to him, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to Israel. Those who tried to kill the child are dead." | 20 "Arise and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who sought the young child's life are dead." | 20 Arise, take to thee the little child and its mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they who sought the life of the little child are dead. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
21 So Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. | 21 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. | 21 Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went to Israel. | 21 He arose and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. | 21 And he arose and took to him the little child and its mother, and came into the land of Israel; | 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being warned by God in a dream, he left for the regions of Galilee, | 22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee: | 22 But when he heard that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod as king of Judea, Joseph was afraid to go there. Warned in a dream, he left for Galilee | 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in the place of his father, Herod, he was afraid to go there. Being warned in a dream, he withdrew into the region of Galilee, | 22 but having heard that 'Archelaus reigns over Judaea, instead of Herod his father,' he was afraid to go there; and having been divinely instructed in a dream, he went away into the parts of Galilee, | 23 and came and lived in a city called Nazareth. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: "He shall be called a Nazarene." | 23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene. | 23 and made his home in a city called Nazareth. So what the prophets had said came true: "He will be called a Nazarene." | 23 and came and lived in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene." | 23 and came and dwelt in a town called Nazareth; so that that should be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets, He shall be called a Nazaraean. |
