The Preaching of John the Baptist | ||||
NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
1 Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, | 1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, | 1 Later, John the Baptizer appeared in the desert of Judea. His message was, | 1 In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, | 1 Now in those days comes John the baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, | 2 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." | 2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. | 2 "Turn to God and change the way you think and act, because the kingdom of heaven is near." | 2 "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!" | 2 and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn nigh. | 3 For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet when he said, "THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!'" | 3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. | 3 Isaiah the prophet spoke about this man when he said, "A voice cries out in the desert: 'Prepare the way for the Lord! Make his paths straight!'" | 3 For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight." | 3 For this is he who has been spoken of through Esaias the prophet, saying, Voice of him that crieth in the wilderness: prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. | 4 Now John himself had a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. | 4 And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. | 4 John wore clothes made from camel's hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His diet consisted of locusts and wild honey. | 4 Now John himself wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. | 4 And John himself had his garment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins, and his nourishment was locusts and wild honey. | 5 Then Jerusalem was going out to him, and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan; | 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, | 5 Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole Jordan Valley went to him. | 5 Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him. | 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the country round the Jordan, | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
6 and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins. | 6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. | 6 As they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River. | 6 They were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. | 6 and were baptised by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. | 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? | 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? | 7 But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to be baptized, he said to them, "You poisonous snakes! Who showed you how to flee from God's coming anger? | 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said to them, "You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? | 7 But seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, Offspring of vipers, who has forewarned you to flee from the coming wrath? | 8 "Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance; | 8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: | 8 Do those things that prove you have turned to God and have changed the way you think and act. | 8 Therefore bring forth fruit worthy of repentance! | 8 Produce therefore fruit worthy of repentance. | 9 and do not suppose that you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father'; for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. | 9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. | 9 Don't think you can say, 'Abraham is our ancestor.' I can guarantee that God can raise up descendants for Abraham from these stones. | 9 Don't think to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father,' for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. | 9 And do not think to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. | 10 "The axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. | 10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. | 10 The ax is now ready to cut the roots of the trees. Any tree that doesn't produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into a fire. | 10 "Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn't bring forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire. | 10 And already the axe is applied to the root of the trees; every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
11 "As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. | 11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: | 11 I baptize you with water so that you will change the way you think and act. But the one who comes after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. | 11 I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit. | 11 I indeed baptise you with water to repentance, but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not fit to bear; he shall baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire; | 12 "His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." | 12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. | 12 His winnowing shovel is in his hand, and he will clean up his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into a barn, but he will burn the husks in a fire that can never be put out." | 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire." | 12 whose winnowing fan is in his hand, and he shall thoroughly purge his threshing-floor, and shall gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. | The Baptism of Jesus |
13 Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him. | 13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. | 13 Then Jesus appeared. He came from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. | 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. | 13 Then comes Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptised of him; | 14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?" | 14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? | 14 But John tried to stop him and said, "I need to be baptized by you. Why are you coming to me?" | 14 But John would have hindered him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?" | 14 but John urgently forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptised of thee; and comest thou to me? | 15 But Jesus answering said to him, "Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he permitted Him. | 15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. | 15 Jesus answered him, "This is the way it has to be now. This is the proper way to do everything that God requires of us." Then John gave in to him. | 15 But Jesus, answering, said to him, "Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him. | 15 But Jesus answering said to him, Suffer it now; for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffers him. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, | 16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: | 16 After Jesus was baptized, he immediately came up from the water. Suddenly, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down as a dove to him. | 16 Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him. | 16 And Jesus, having been baptised, went up straightway from the water, and lo, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him: | 17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased." | 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. | 17 Then a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love-my Son with whom I am pleased." | 17 Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." | 17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I have found my delight. |
