Cities of Refuge
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
1 "When the LORD your God cuts off the nations, whose land the LORD your God gives you, and you dispossess them and settle in their cities and in their houses,1 When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;1 The LORD your God will destroy all the nations that are living in the land that he's giving you. You will force them out and live in their cities and houses.1 When Yahweh your God shall cut off the nations, whose land Yahweh your God gives you, and you succeed them, and dwell in their cities, and in their houses;1 When Jehovah thy God hath cut off the nations whose land Jehovah thy God giveth thee, and thou hast dispossessed them, and dwellest in their cities and in their houses,
2 you shall set aside three cities for yourself in the midst of your land, which the LORD your God gives you to possess.2 Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.2 When all this is done, set aside three cities in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.2 you shall set apart three cities for you in the midst of your land, which Yahweh your God gives you to possess it.2 thou shalt separate three cities for thyself in the midst of thy land, which Jehovah thy God giveth thee to possess.
3 "You shall prepare the roads for yourself, and divide into three parts the territory of your land which the LORD your God will give you as a possession, so that any manslayer may flee there.3 Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.3 Provide a route to each of these cities and divide the land that the LORD your God is giving you into three regions. Whoever kills someone may run to one of these cities.3 You shall prepare you the way, and divide the borders of your land, which Yahweh your God causes you to inherit, into three parts, that every manslayer may flee there.3 Thou shalt prepare thee the way, and divide the territory of thy land, which Jehovah thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, so that every slayer may flee thither.
4 "Now this is the case of the manslayer who may flee there and live: when he kills his friend unintentionally, not hating him previously--4 And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbor ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;4 A person who unintentionally kills someone he never hated in the past may run to one of these cities to save his life.4 This is the case of the manslayer, that shall flee there and live: whoever kills his neighbor unawares, and didn't hate him in time past;4 And this is the case of the slayer who shall flee thither that he may live: he that smiteth his neighbour unwittingly, whom he hated not previously;
5 as when a man goes into the forest with his friend to cut wood, and his hand swings the axe to cut down the tree, and the iron head slips off the handle and strikes his friend so that he dies-- he may flee to one of these cities and live;5 As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbor to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbor, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live:5 Suppose two people go into the woods to cut wood. As one of them swings the ax to cut down a tree, the head flies off the handle, hits, and kills the other person. The one who accidentally killed the other person may run to one of these cities and save his life.5 as when a man goes into the forest with his neighbor to chop wood, and his hand fetches a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slips from the handle, and lights on his neighbor, so that he dies; he shall flee to one of these cities and live:5 as when he goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the iron slippeth from the handle, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; such an one shall flee unto one of these cities, and live;
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
6 otherwise the avenger of blood might pursue the manslayer in the heat of his anger, and overtake him, because the way is long, and take his life, though he was not deserving of death, since he had not hated him previously.6 Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.6 Otherwise, in a rage the relative who has the authority to avenge the death will pursue him. If the place is too far away, the relative may catch up with him and take his life even though he didn't deserve the death penalty, because in the past he never hated the person he killed.6 lest the avenger of blood pursue the manslayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and strike him mortally; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he didn't hate him in time past.6 lest the avenger of blood pursue the manslayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and smite him mortally; whereas he was not worthy of death, since he hated him not previously.
7 "Therefore, I command you, saying, 'You shall set aside three cities for yourself.'7 Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.7 This is why I'm commanding you to set aside three cities for yourselves.7 Therefore I command you, saying, You shall set apart three cities for yourselves.7 Therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thyself.
8 "If the LORD your God enlarges your territory, just as He has sworn to your fathers, and gives you all the land which He promised to give your fathers--8 And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers;8 The LORD your God may expand your country's borders as he promised your ancestors with an oath. He may give you the whole land he promised to give them.8 If Yahweh your God enlarges your border, as he has sworn to your fathers, and gives you all the land which he promised to give to your fathers;8 And if Jehovah thy God enlarge thy border, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers
9 if you carefully observe all this commandment which I command you today, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in His ways always-- then you shall add three more cities for yourself, besides these three.9 If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three:9 He may do this because you faithfully obey all these commands I am now giving you-to love the LORD your God and follow his directions as long as you live. If this happens, you may add three more cities of refuge to these three.9 if you keep all this commandment to do it, which I command you this day, to love Yahweh your God, and to walk ever in his ways; then you shall add three cities more for yourselves, besides these three:9 (if thou keep all this commandment to do it, which I command thee this day, to love Jehovah thy God, and to walk in his ways continually), then shalt thou add three cities more for thyself to these three,
10 "So innocent blood will not be shed in the midst of your land which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance, and bloodguiltiness be on you.10 That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.10 That way, innocent people won't be killed in the land that the LORD your God is giving you, and you won't be guilty of murder.10 that innocent blood not be shed in the midst of your land, which Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, and so blood be on you.10 that innocent blood be not shed in the midst of thy land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and blood come not upon thee.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
11 "But if there is a man who hates his neighbor and lies in wait for him and rises up against him and strikes him so that he dies, and he flees to one of these cities,11 But if any man hate his neighbor, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:11 Suppose someone hates another person, waits in ambush for him, attacks him, takes his life, and runs to one of these cities.11 But if any man hates his neighbor, and lies in wait for him, and rises up against him, and strikes him mortally so that he dies, and he flees into one of these cities;11 But if a man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and he flee into one of these cities,
12 then the elders of his city shall send and take him from there and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.12 Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.12 If someone does this, the leaders of your city must send for that person. They must take him from that city and hand him over to the relative who has the authority to avenge the death. He must die.12 then the elders of his city shall send and bring him there, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.12 then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.
13 "You shall not pity him, but you shall purge the blood of the innocent from Israel, that it may go well with you.13 Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.13 They must have no pity on him. The guilt of murdering an innocent person must be removed from Israel. Then things will go well for Israel.13 Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall put away the innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with you.13 Thine eye shall not spare him; and thou shalt put away innocent blood from Israel, that it may be well with thee.
Laws of Landmark and Testimony
14 "You shall not move your neighbor's boundary mark, which the ancestors have set, in your inheritance which you will inherit in the land that the LORD your God gives you to possess.14 Thou shalt not remove thy neighbor's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.14 Never move your neighbor's original boundary marker on any property in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.14 You shall not remove your neighbor's landmark, which they of old time have set, in your inheritance which you shall inherit, in the land that Yahweh your God gives you to possess it.14 Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have fixed in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee to possess.
15 "A single witness shall not rise up against a man on account of any iniquity or any sin which he has committed; on the evidence of two or three witnesses a matter shall be confirmed.15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.15 One witness is never enough to convict someone of a crime, offense, or sin he may have committed. Cases must be settled based on the testimony of two or three witnesses.15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sins: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall a matter be established.15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, and for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall a matter be established.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
16 "If a malicious witness rises up against a man to accuse him of wrongdoing,16 If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;16 This is what you must do whenever a witness takes the stand to accuse a person falsely of a crime.16 If an unrighteous witness rise up against any man to testify against him of wrongdoing,16 If an unrighteous witness rise up against any man to testify against him of an offence;
17 then both the men who have the dispute shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges who will be in office in those days.17 Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;17 The two people involved must stand in the LORD's presence, in front of the priests and judges who are serving at that time.17 then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before Yahweh, before the priests and the judges who shall be in those days;17 then both the men between whom the controversy is shall stand before Jehovah, before the priests and the judges that shall be in those days;
18 "The judges shall investigate thoroughly, and if the witness is a false witness and he has accused his brother falsely,18 And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;18 The judges must make a thorough investigation. If it is found that the witness lied when he testified against the other Israelite,18 and the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness is a false witness, and has testified falsely against his brother;18 and the judges shall make thorough inquiry; and if the witness be a false witness, and he have testified falsely against his brother,
19 then you shall do to him just as he had intended to do to his brother. Thus you shall purge the evil from among you.19 Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.19 then do to him what he planned to do to the other person. You must get rid of this evil.19 then you shall do to him as he had thought to do to his brother: so you shall put away the evil from the midst of you.19 then shall ye do unto him as he had thought to have done unto his brother; and thou shalt put evil away from thy midst.
20 "The rest will hear and be afraid, and will never again do such an evil thing among you.20 And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.20 When the rest of the people hear about this, they will be afraid. Never again will such an evil thing be done among you.20 Those who remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil in the midst of you.20 And those that remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil in thy midst.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
21 "Thus you shall not show pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.21 And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.21 Have no pity on him: [Take] a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand, and a foot for a foot.21 Your eyes shall not pity; life [shall go] for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.21 And thine eye shall not spare: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
