Sonship in Christ
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
1 Now I say, as long as the heir is a child, he does not differ at all from a slave although he is owner of everything,1 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;1 Let me explain further. As long as an heir is a child, he is no better off than a slave, even though he owns everything.1 But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a bondservant, though he is lord of all;1 Now I say, As long as the heir is a child, he differs nothing from a bondman, though he be lord of all;
2 but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by the father.2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.2 He is placed under the control of guardians and trustees until the time set by his father.2 but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed by the father.2 but he is under guardians and stewards until the period fixed by the father.
3 So also we, while we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental things of the world.3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:3 It was the same way with us. When we were children, we were slaves to the principles of this world.3 So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental principles of the world.3 So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the principles of the world;
4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law,4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,4 But when the right time came, God sent his Son [into the world]. A woman gave birth to him, and he came under the control of God's laws.4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent out his Son, born to a woman, born under the law,4 but when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, come of woman, come under law,
5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.5 God sent him to pay for the freedom of those who were controlled by these laws so that we would be adopted as his children.5 that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of children.5 that he might redeem those under law, that we might receive sonship.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
6 Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!"6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.6 Because you are God's children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into us to call out, "Abba! Father!" 6 And because you are children, God sent out the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, "Abba, Father!"6 But because ye are sons, God has sent out the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
7 Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.7 So you are no longer slaves but God's children. Since you are God's children, God has also made you heirs.7 So you are no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.7 So thou art no longer bondman, but son; but if son, heir also through God.
8 However at that time, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those which by nature are no gods.8 Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.8 When you didn't know God, you were slaves to things which are really not gods at all.8 However at that time, not knowing God, you were in bondage to those who by nature are not gods.8 But then indeed, not knowing God, ye were in bondage to those who by nature are not gods;
9 But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again?9 But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?9 But now you know God, or rather, God knows you. So how can you turn back again to the powerless and bankrupt principles of this world? Why do you want to become their slaves all over again?9 But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, why do you turn back again to the weak and miserable elemental principles, to which you desire to be in bondage all over again?9 but now, knowing God, but rather being known by God, how do ye turn again to the weak and beggarly principles to which ye desire to be again anew in bondage?
10 You observe days and months and seasons and years.10 Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.10 You religiously observe days, months, seasons, and years!10 You observe days, months, seasons, and years.10 Ye observe days and months and times and years.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
11 I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored over you in vain.11 I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.11 I'm afraid for you. Maybe the hard work I spent on you has been wasted.11 I am afraid for you, that I might have wasted my labor for you.11 I am afraid of you, lest indeed I have laboured in vain as to you.
12 I beg of you, brethren, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You have done me no wrong;12 Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all.12 Brothers and sisters, I beg you to become like me. After all, I became like you were. You didn't do anything wrong to me.12 I beg you, brothers, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong,12 Be as I am, for I also am as ye, brethren, I beseech you: ye have not at all wronged me.
13 but you know that it was because of a bodily illness that I preached the gospel to you the first time;13 Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.13 You know that the first time I brought you the Good News I was ill.13 but you know that because of weakness of the flesh I preached the Good News to you the first time.13 But ye know that in weakness of the flesh I announced the glad tidings to you at the first;
14 and that which was a trial to you in my bodily condition you did not despise or loathe, but you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus Himself.14 And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.14 Even though my illness was difficult for you, you didn't despise or reject me. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were God's messenger or Christ Jesus himself. 14 That which was a temptation to you in my flesh, you didn't despise nor reject; but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.14 and my temptation, which was in my flesh, ye did not slight nor reject with contempt; but ye received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus.
15 Where then is that sense of blessing you had? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.15 Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.15 What happened to your positive attitude? It's a fact that if it had been possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me.15 What was the blessing you enjoyed? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.15 What then was your blessedness? for I bear you witness that, if possible, plucking out your own eyes ye would have given them to me.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
16 So have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?16 Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?16 Can it be that I have become your enemy for telling you the truth?16 So then, have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?16 So I have become your enemy in speaking the truth to you?
17 They eagerly seek you, not commendably, but they wish to shut you out so that you will seek them.17 They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them.17 These people [who distort the Good News] are devoted to you, but not in a good way. They don't want you to associate with me so that you will be devoted only to them.17 They zealously seek you in no good way. No, they desire to alienate you, that you may seek them.17 They are not rightly zealous after you, but desire to shut you out from us, that ye may be zealous after them.
18 But it is good always to be eagerly sought in a commendable manner, and not only when I am present with you.18 But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.18 (Devotion to a good cause is always good, even when I'm not with you.)18 But it is always good to be zealous in a good cause, and not only when I am present with you.18 But it is right to be zealous at all times in what is right, and not only when I am present with you --
19 My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you--19 My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,19 My children, I am suffering birth pains for you again until Christ is formed in you.19 My little children, of whom I am again in travail until Christ is formed in you--19 my children, of whom I again travail in birth until Christ shall have been formed in you:
20 but I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.20 I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.20 I wish I were with you right now so that I could change the tone of my voice. I'm completely puzzled by what you've done!20 but I could wish to be present with you now, and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.20 and I should wish to be present with you now, and change my voice, for I am perplexed as to you.
Bond and Free
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
21 Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not listen to the law?21 Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?21 Those who want to be controlled by Moses' laws should tell me something. Are you really listening to what Moses' Teachings say?21 Tell me, you that desire to be under the law, don't you listen to the law?21 Tell me, ye who are desirous of being under law, do ye not listen to the law?
22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the bondwoman and one by the free woman.22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.22 Scripture says that Abraham had two sons, one by a woman who was a slave and the other by a free woman.22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the handmaid, and one by the free woman.22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons; one of the maid servant, and one of the free woman.
23 But the son by the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise.23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.23 Now, the son of the slave woman was conceived in a natural way, but the son of the free woman was conceived through a promise [made to Abraham].23 However, the son by the handmaid was born according to the flesh, but the son by the free woman was born through promise.23 But he that was of the maid servant was born according to flesh, and he that was of the free woman through the promise.
24 This is allegorically speaking, for these women are two covenants: one proceeding from Mount Sinai bearing children who are to be slaves; she is Hagar.24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.24 I'm going to use these historical events as an illustration. The women illustrate two arrangements. The one woman, Hagar, is the arrangement made on Mount Sinai. Her children are born into slavery. 24 These things contain an allegory, for these are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children to bondage, which is Hagar.24 Which things have an allegorical sense; for these are two covenants: one from mount Sinai, gendering to bondage, which is Hagar.
25 Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children.25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.25 Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia. She is like Jerusalem today because she and her children are slaves.25 For this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and answers to the Jerusalem that exists now, for she is in bondage with her children.25 For Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which is now, for she is in bondage with her children;
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
26 But the Jerusalem above is free; she is our mother.26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is the mother of us all.26 but the Jerusalem above is free, which is our mother.
27 For it is written, "REJOICE, BARREN WOMAN WHO DOES NOT BEAR; BREAK FORTH AND SHOUT, YOU WHO ARE NOT IN LABOR; FOR MORE NUMEROUS ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE DESOLATE THAN OF THE ONE WHO HAS A HUSBAND."27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.27 Scripture says: "Rejoice, women who cannot get pregnant, who cannot give birth to any children! Break into shouting, those who feel no pains of childbirth! Because the deserted woman will have more children than the woman who has a husband."27 For it is written, "Rejoice, you barren who don't bear. Break forth and shout, you that don't travail. For more are the children of the desolate than of her who has a husband."27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break out and cry, thou that travailest not; because the children of the desolate are more numerous than those of her that has a husband.
28 And you brethren, like Isaac, are children of promise.28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.28 Now you, brothers and sisters, are children of the promise like Isaac.28 Now we, brothers, as Isaac was, are children of promise.28 But ye, brethren, after the pattern of Isaac, are children of promise.
29 But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now also.29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.29 Furthermore, at that time the son who was conceived in a natural way persecuted the son conceived in a spiritual way. That's exactly what's happening now.29 But as then, he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now.29 But as then he that was born according to flesh persecuted him that was born according to Spirit, so also it is now.
30 But what does the Scripture say? "CAST OUT THE BONDWOMAN AND HER SON, FOR THE SON OF THE BONDWOMAN SHALL NOT BE AN HEIR WITH THE SON OF THE FREE WOMAN."30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.30 But what does Scripture say? "Get rid of the slave woman and her son, because the son of the slave woman must never share the inheritance with the son of the free woman."30 However what does the Scripture say? "Throw out the handmaid and her son, for the son of the handmaid will not inherit with the son of the free woman."30 But what says the scripture? Cast out the maid servant and her son; for the son of the maid servant shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
31 So then, brethren, we are not children of a bondwoman, but of the free woman.31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.31 Brothers and sisters, we are not children of a slave woman but of the free woman.31 So then, brothers, we are not children of a handmaid, but of the free woman.31 So then, brethren, we are not maid servant's children, but children of the free woman.
