1 Now the LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, while he was sitting at the tent door in the heat of the day.1 And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;1 The LORD appeared to Abraham by the oak trees belonging to Mamre as he was sitting at the entrance of his tent during the hottest part of the day.1 Yahweh appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day.1 And Jehovah appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre. And he sat at the tent-door in the heat of the day.
2 When he lifted up his eyes and looked, behold, three men were standing opposite him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth,2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,2 Abraham looked up, and suddenly he saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran to meet them, and he bowed with his face touching the ground.2 He lifted up his eyes and looked, and saw that three men stood opposite him. When he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the earth,2 And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, three men standing near him. And when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent-door, and bowed himself to the earth,
3 and said, "My lord, if now I have found favor in your sight, please do not pass your servant by.3 And said, My LORD, if now I have found favor in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:3 "Please, sir," Abraham said, "stop by to visit me for a while.3 and said, "My lord, if now I have found favor in your sight, please don't go away from your servant.3 and said, Lord, if now I have found favour in thine eyes, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant.
4 "Please let a little water be brought and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree;4 Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:4 Why don't we let someone bring a little water? After you wash your feet, you can stretch out and rest under the tree.4 Now let a little water be fetched, wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.4 Let now a little water be fetched, that ye may wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.
5 and I will bring a piece of bread, that you may refresh yourselves; after that you may go on, since you have visited your servant." And they said, "So do, as you have said."5 And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.5 Let me bring some bread so that you can regain your strength. After that you can leave, since this is why you stopped by to visit me." They answered, "That's fine. Do as you say."5 I will get a morsel of bread so you can refresh your heart. After that you may go your way, now that you have come to your servant." They said, "Very well, do as you have said."5 And I will fetch a morsel of bread; and refresh yourselves; after that ye shall pass on; for therefore have ye passed on towards your servant. And they said, So do as thou hast said.

6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, "Quickly, prepare three measures of fine flour, knead it and make bread cakes."6 And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to find Sarah. "Quick," he said, "get three measures of flour, knead it, and make bread."6 Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, "Quickly prepare three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes."6 And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, Knead quickly three seahs of wheaten flour, and make cakes.
7 Abraham also ran to the herd, and took a tender and choice calf and gave it to the servant, and he hurried to prepare it.7 And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it.7 Then Abraham ran to the herd and took one of his best calves. He gave it to his servant, who prepared it quickly.7 Abraham ran to the herd, and fetched a tender and good calf, and gave it to the servant. He hurried to dress it.7 And Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf tender and good, and gave it to the attendant; and he hasted to dress it.
8 He took curds and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and placed it before them; and he was standing by them under the tree as they ate.8 And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.8 Abraham took cheese and milk, as well as the meat, and set these in front of them. Then he stood by them under the tree as they ate.8 He took butter, milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them. 9 Then they said to him, "Where is Sarah your wife?" And he said, "There, in the tent."9 And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.9 They asked him, "Where is your wife Sarah?" He answered, "Over there, in the tent."9 They asked him, "Where is Sarah, your wife?" He said, "See, in the tent."9 And they said to him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.
10 He said, "I will surely return to you at this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son." And Sarah was listening at the tent door, which was behind him.10 And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.10 The LORD said, "I promise I'll come back to you next year at this time, and your wife Sarah will have a son." Sarah happened to be listening at the entrance of the tent, which was behind him.10 He said, "I will certainly return to you when the season comes round. Behold, Sarah your wife will have a son." Sarah heard in the tent door, which was behind him.10 And he said, I will certainly return to thee at this time of the year, and behold, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah was listening at the tent-door, which was behind him.

11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; Sarah was past childbearing.11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.11 Abraham and Sarah were old. 12 Sarah laughed to herself, saying, "After I have become old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?"12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?12 And so Sarah laughed to herself, thinking, "Now that I've become old, will I enjoy myself again? What's more, my husband is old!"12 Sarah laughed within herself, saying, "After I have grown old will I have pleasure, my lord being old also?"12 And Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am become old, shall I have pleasure, and my lord old?
13 And the LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh, saying, 'Shall I indeed bear a child, when I am so old?'13 And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?13 The LORD asked Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Can I really have a child now that I'm old?'13 Yahweh said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh, saying, 'Will I really bear a child, yet I am old?'13 And Jehovah said to Abraham, Why is this, that Sarah laughs, saying, Shall I indeed bear, when I am become old?
14 "Is anything too difficult for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son."14 Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will come back to you next year at this time, and Sarah will have a son."14 Is anything too hard for Yahweh? At the set time I will return to you, when the season comes round, and Sarah will have a son."14 Is any matter too wonderful for Jehovah? At the time appointed I will return to thee, at this time of the year, and Sarah shall have a son.
15 Sarah denied it however, saying, "I did not laugh"; for she was afraid. And He said, "No, but you did laugh."15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.15 Because she was afraid, Sarah denied that she had laughed. But the LORD said, "Yes, you did laugh."15 Then Sarah denied, saying, "I didn't laugh," for she was afraid. He said, "No, but you did laugh."15 And Sarah denied, saying, I did not laugh; for she was afraid. And he said, No; but thou didst laugh.

16 Then the men rose up from there, and looked down toward Sodom; and Abraham was walking with them to send them off.16 And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.16 Then the men got up to leave. As Abraham was walking with them to see them off, they looked toward Sodom.16 The men rose up from there, and looked toward Sodom. Abraham went with them to see them on their way.16 And the men rose up thence, and looked toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to conduct them.
17 The LORD said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do,17 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;17 The LORD said, "I shouldn't hide what I am going to do from Abraham.17 Yahweh said, "Will I hide from Abraham what I do,17 And Jehovah said, Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing?
18 since Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed?18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?18 After all, Abraham is going to become a great and mighty nation and through him all the nations of the earth will be blessed.18 since Abraham has surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him?18 Since Abraham shall indeed become a great and mighty nation; and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him.
19 "For I have chosen him, so that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice, so that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken about him."19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.19 I have chosen him so that he will direct his children and his family after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just. In this way I, the LORD, will do what I have promised Abraham."19 For I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of Yahweh, to do righteousness and justice; to the end that Yahweh may bring on Abraham that which he has spoken of him."19 For I know him that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of Jehovah, to do righteousness and justice, in order that Jehovah may bring upon Abraham what he hath spoken of him.
20 And the LORD said, "The outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is indeed great, and their sin is exceedingly grave.20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;20 The LORD also said, "Sodom and Gomorrah have many complaints against them, and their sin is very serious.20 Yahweh said, "Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous,20 And Jehovah said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grievous,

21 "I will go down now, and see if they have done entirely according to its outcry, which has come to Me; and if not, I will know."21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.21 I must go down and see whether these complaints are true. If not, I will know it."21 I will go down now, and see whether their deeds are as bad as the reports which have come to me. 22 Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham was still standing before the LORD.22 And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.22 From there the men turned and went on toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing in front of the LORD.22 The men turned from there, and went toward Sodom, but Abraham stood yet before Yahweh.22 And the men turned thence, and went towards Sodom; and Abraham remained yet standing before Jehovah.
23 Abraham came near and said, "Will You indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked?23 And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?23 Abraham came closer and asked, "Are you really going to sweep away the innocent with the guilty?23 Abraham drew near, and said, "Will you consume the righteous with the wicked?23 And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also cause the righteous to perish with the wicked?
24 "Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will You indeed sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it?24 Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?24 What if there are 50 innocent people in the city? Are you really going to sweep them away? Won't you spare that place for the sake of the 50 innocent people who are in it?24 What if there are fifty righteous within the city? Will you consume and not spare the place for the fifty righteous who are in it?24 There are perhaps fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not forgive the place for the sake of the fifty righteous that are therein?
25 "Far be it from You to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?"25 That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?25 It would be unthinkable for you to do such a thing, to treat the innocent and the guilty alike and to kill the innocent with the guilty. That would be unthinkable! Won't the judge of the whole earth do what is fair?"25 Be it far from you to do things like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Shouldn't the Judge of all the earth do right?"25 Far be it from thee to do so, to slay the righteous with the wicked, that the righteous should be as the wicked far be it from thee! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?

26 So the LORD said, "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place on their account."26 And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.26 The LORD said, "If I find 50 innocent people inside the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake."26 Yahweh said, "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sake."26 And Jehovah said, If I find at Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will forgive all the place for their sakes.
27 And Abraham replied, "Now behold, I have ventured to speak to the Lord, although I am but dust and ashes.27 And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD, which am but dust and ashes:27 Abraham asked, "Consider now, if I may be so bold as to ask you, although I'm [only] dust and ashes,27 Abraham answered, "See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord, who am but dust and ashes.27 And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have ventured to speak unto the Lord; I, who am dust and ashes.
28 "Suppose the fifty righteous are lacking five, will You destroy the whole city because of five?" And He said, "I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there."28 Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.28 what if there are 45 innocent people? Will you destroy the whole city because of 5 fewer people?" The LORD answered, "I will not destroy it if I find 45 there."28 What if there will lack five of the fifty righteous? Will you destroy all the city for lack of five?" He said, "I will not destroy it, if I find forty-five there."28 Perhaps there may want five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city on account of the five? And he said, If I shall find forty-five there, I will not destroy it.
29 He spoke to Him yet again and said, "Suppose forty are found there?" And He said, "I will not do it on account of the forty."29 And he spake unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake.29 Abraham asked him again, "What if 40 are found there?" He answered, "For the sake of the 40 I will not do it."29 He spoke to him yet again, and said, "What if there are forty found there?" He said, "I will not do it for the forty's sake."29 And he continued yet to speak with him, and said, Perhaps there may be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for the forty's sake.
30 Then he said, "Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak; suppose thirty are found there?" And He said, "I will not do it if I find thirty there."30 And he said unto him, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.30 "Please don't be angry if I speak again," Abraham said. "What if 30 are found there?" He answered, "If I find 30 there, I will not do it."30 He said, "Oh don't let the Lord be angry, and I will speak. What if there are thirty found there?" He said, "I will not do it, if I find thirty there."30 And he said, Oh, let not the Lord be angry that I speak! Perhaps there may be thirty found there. And he said, I will not do it if I find thirty there.

31 And he said, "Now behold, I have ventured to speak to the Lord; suppose twenty are found there?" And He said, "I will not destroy it on account of the twenty."31 And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake.31 "Look now, if I may be so bold as to ask you," Abraham said. "What if 20 are found there?" He answered, "I will not destroy it for the sake of the 20."31 He said, "See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord. What if there are twenty found there?" He said, "I will not destroy it for the twenty's sake."31 And he said, Behold now, I have ventured to speak with the Lord. Perhaps there may be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for the twenty's sake.
32 Then he said, "Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak only this once; suppose ten are found there?" And He said, "I will not destroy it on account of the ten."32 And he said, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.32 "Please don't be angry if I speak only one more time," Abraham said. "What if 10 are found there?" He answered, "I will not destroy it for the sake of the 10."32 He said, "Oh don't let the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there?" He said, "I will not destroy it for the ten's sake."32 And he said, Oh, let not the Lord be angry, that I speak yet but this time! Perhaps there may be ten found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for the ten's sake.
33 As soon as He had finished speaking to Abraham the LORD departed, and Abraham returned to his place.33 And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.33 When the LORD finished speaking to Abraham, he left. Abraham returned home.33 Yahweh went his way, as soon as he had finished communing with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.33 And Jehovah went away when he had ended speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.
