Jacob’s Fear of Esau
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
 Now as Jacob went on his way, the angels of God met him.1 And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.1 As Jacob went on his way, God's angels met him.1 Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.1 And Jacob went on his way; and the angels of God met him.
 Jacob said when he saw them, "This is God's camp." So he named that place Mahanaim.2 And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.2 When he saw them, Jacob said, "This is God's camp!" He named that place Mahanaim [Two Camps].2 When he saw them, Jacob said, "This is God's army." He called the name of that place Mahanaim.2 And when Jacob saw them he said, This is the camp of God. And he called the name of that place Mahanaim.
 Then Jacob sent messengers before him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.3 Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in Seir, the country of Edom.3 Jacob sent messengers in front of him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom.3 And Jacob sent messengers before his face to Esau his brother, into the land of Seir, the fields of Edom.
 He also commanded them saying, "Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: 'Thus says your servant Jacob, "I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now;4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:4 He commanded them to give this message to Esau, "Sir, this is what Jacob has to say, 'I've been living with Laban and have stayed until now.4 He commanded them, saying, "This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: 'This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak to my lord, to Esau: Thy servant Jacob speaks thus With Laban have I sojourned and tarried until now;
 I have oxen and donkeys and flocks and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight."'"5 And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.5 I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, and male and female slaves. I've sent [these messengers] to tell you [this news] in order to win your favor.'"5 I have cattle, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.'"5 and I have oxen, and asses, sheep, and bondmen, and bondwomen; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favour in thine eyes.

 The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother Esau, and furthermore he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him."6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.6 When the messengers came back to Jacob, they said, "We went to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you with 400 men."6 The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother Esau. Not only that, but he comes to meet you, and four hundred men with him."6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother, to Esau; and he also is coming to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and the herds and the camels, into two companies;7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;7 Jacob was terrified and distressed. So he divided the people, the sheep and goats, the cattle, and the camels into two camps.7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. He divided the people who were with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, into two companies;7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid, and was distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the sheep and the cattle and the camels, into two troops.
 for he said, "If Esau comes to the one company and attacks it, then the company which is left will escape."8 And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.8 He thought, "If Esau attacks the one camp, then the other camp will be able to escape."8 and he said, "If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape."8 And he said, If Esau come to the one troop and smite it, then the other troop which is left shall escape.
 Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O LORD, who said to me, 'Return to your country and to your relatives, and I will prosper you,'9 And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:9 Then Jacob prayed, "God of my grandfather Abraham and God of my father Isaac! LORD, you said to me, 'Go back to your land and to your relatives, and I will make you prosperous.'9 Jacob said, "God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh, who said to me, 'Return to your country, and to your relatives, and I will do you good,'9 And Jacob said, God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Jehovah, who saidst unto me: Return into thy country and to thy kindred, and I will do thee good,
 I am unworthy of all the lovingkindness and of all the faithfulness which You have shown to Your servant; for with my staff only I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two companies.10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast showed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.10 I'm not worthy of all the love and faithfulness you have shown me. I only had a shepherd's staff when I crossed the Jordan River, but now I have two camps.10 I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant; for with just my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.10 I am too small for all the loving-kindness and all the faithfulness that thou hast shewn unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I am become two troops.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
 "Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, that he will come and attack me and the mothers with the children.11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.11 Please save me from my brother Esau, because I'm afraid of him. I'm afraid that he'll come and attack me and the mothers and children too.11 Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he come and strike me, and the mothers with the children.11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and smite me, and the mother with the children.
 "For You said, 'I will surely prosper you and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which is too great to be numbered.'"12 And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.12 But you did say, 'I will make sure that you are prosperous and that your descendants will be as many as the grains of sand on the seashore. No one will be able to count them because there are so many.'"12 You said, 'I will surely do you good, and make your seed as the sand of the sea, which can't be numbered because there are so many.'"12 And thou saidst, I will certainly deal well with thee, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
 So he spent the night there. Then he selected from what he had with him a present for his brother Esau:13 And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;13 He stayed there that night. Then he prepared a gift for his brother Esau from what he had brought with him:13 He lodged there that night, and took from that which he had with him, a present for Esau, his brother:13 And he lodged there that night; and took of what came to his hand a gift for Esau his brother --
 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,14 200 female goats and 20 male goats, 200 female sheep and 20 male sheep,14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,14 two hundred she-goats, and twenty he-goats; two hundred ewes, and twenty rams;
 thirty milking camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.15 30 female camels with their young, 40 cows and 10 bulls, 20 female donkeys and 10 male donkeys.15 thirty milk camels and their colts, forty cows, ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals.15 thirty milch camels with their colts; forty kine, and ten bulls; twenty she-asses, and ten young asses.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
 He delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, "Pass on before me, and put a space between droves."16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.16 He placed servants in charge of each herd. Then he said to his servants, "Go ahead of me, and keep a distance between the herds."16 He delivered them into the hands of his servants, every herd by itself, and said to his servants, "Pass over before me, and put a space between herd and herd."16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself; and he said to his servants, Go on before me, and put a space between drove and drove.
 He commanded the one in front, saying, "When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, saying, 'To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and to whom do these animals in front of you belong?'17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?17 He commanded the first servant, "When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, 'To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and whose animals are these ahead of you?'17 He commanded the foremost, saying, "When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, 'Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?'17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meets thee, and asks thee, saying, Whose art thou, and where goest thou, and whose are these before thee?
 then you shall say, 'These belong to your servant Jacob; it is a present sent to my lord Esau. And behold, he also is behind us.'"18 Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.18 then say, 'Sir, they belong to your servant Jacob. This is a gift sent to you. Jacob is right behind us.'"18 Then you shall say, 'They are your servant, Jacob's. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.'"18 then thou shalt say, Thy servant Jacob's: it is a gift sent to my lord, to Esau. And behold, he also is behind us.
 Then he commanded also the second and the third, and all those who followed the droves, saying, "After this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him;19 And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.19 He also commanded the second servant, the third, and all the others who followed the herds. He said, "Say the same thing to Esau when you find him.19 He commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the herds, saying, "This is how you shall speak to Esau, when you find him.19 And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, According to this word shall ye speak to Esau when ye find him.
 and you shall say, 'Behold, your servant Jacob also is behind us.'" For he said, "I will appease him with the present that goes before me. Then afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me."20 And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.20 And be sure to add, 'Jacob is right behind us, sir.' " He thought, "I'll make peace with him by giving him this gift that I'm sending ahead of me. After that I will see him, and he'll welcome me back."20 You shall say, 'Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.'" For, he said, "I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me."20 And, moreover, ye shall say, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will propitiate him with the gift that goes before me, and afterwards I will see his face: perhaps he will accept me.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
 So the present passed on before him, while he himself spent that night in the camp.21 So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.21 So Jacob sent the gift ahead of him while he stayed in the camp that night.21 So the present passed over before him, and he himself lodged that night in the camp.21 And the gift went over before him; and he himself lodged that night in the camp.
 Now he arose that same night and took his two wives and his two maids and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.22 During that night he got up and gathered his two wives, his two slaves and his eleven children and crossed at the shallow part of the Jabbok River.22 He rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two handmaids, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford of the Jabbok.22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two maidservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford of the Jabbok;
 He took them and sent them across the stream. And he sent across whatever he had.23 And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.23 After he sent them across the stream, he sent everything else across.23 He took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had.23 and he took them and led them over the river, and led over what he had.
Jacob Wrestles
 Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak.24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.24 So Jacob was left alone. Then a man wrestled with him until dawn.24 Jacob was left alone, and wrestled with a man there until the breaking of the day.24 And Jacob remained alone; and a man wrestled with him until the rising of the dawn.
 When he saw that he had not prevailed against him, he touched the socket of his thigh; so the socket of Jacob's thigh was dislocated while he wrestled with him.25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.25 When the man saw that he could not win against Jacob, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that it was dislocated as they wrestled.25 When he saw that he didn't prevail against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was strained, as he wrestled.25 And when he saw that he did not prevail against him, he touched the joint of his thigh; and the joint of Jacob's thigh was dislocated as he wrestled with him.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
 Then he said, "Let me go, for the dawn is breaking." But he said, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.26 Then the man said, "Let me go; it's almost dawn." But Jacob answered, "I won't let you go until you bless me."26 The man said, "Let me go, for the day breaks." Jacob said, "I won't let you go, unless you bless me."26 And he said, Let me go, for the dawn ariseth. And he said, I will not let thee go except thou bless me.
 So he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob."27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.27 So the man asked him, "What's your name?" "Jacob," he answered.27 He said to him, "What is your name?" He said, "Jacob."27 And he said to him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
 He said, "Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed."28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.28 The man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob but Israel [He Struggles With God], because you have struggled with God and with men-and you have won."28 He said, "Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed."28 And he said, Thy name shall not henceforth be called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast wrestled with God, and with men, and hast prevailed.
 Then Jacob asked him and said, "Please tell me your name." But he said, "Why is it that you ask my name?" And he blessed him there.29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.29 Jacob said, "Please tell me your name." The man answered, "Why do you ask for my name?" Then he blessed Jacob there.29 Jacob asked him, "Please tell me your name." He said, "Why is it that you ask what my name is?" He blessed him there.29 And Jacob asked and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, How is it that thou askest after my name? And he blessed him there.
 So Jacob named the place Peniel, for he said, "I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been preserved."30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.30 So Jacob named that place Peniel [Face of God], because he said, "I have seen God face to face, but my life was saved."30 Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for, he said, "I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved."30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel For I have seen God face to face, and my life has been preserved.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
 Now the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over Penuel, and he was limping on his thigh.31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.31 The sun rose as he passed Penuel. He was limping because of his hip. 31 The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh.31 And as he passed over Peniel, the sun rose upon him; and he limped upon his hip.
 Therefore, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip which is on the socket of the thigh, because he touched the socket of Jacob's thigh in the sinew of the hip.32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.32 (Therefore, even today the people of Israel do not eat the muscle of the thigh attached to the hip socket because God touched the socket of Jacob's hip at the muscle of the thigh.)32 Therefore the children of Israel don't eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew of the hip.32 Therefore the children of Israel do not eat of the sinew that is over the joint of the thigh, to this day; because he touched the joint of Jacob's thigh the sinew.
