The Sin of Partiality

1 My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism.1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.1 My brothers and sisters, practice your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ by not favoring one person over another.1 My brothers, don't hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory with partiality.1 My brethren, do not have the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, Lord of glory, with respect of persons:
2 For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes,2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;2 For example, two men come to your worship service. One man is wearing gold rings and fine clothes; the other man, who is poor, is wearing shabby clothes.2 For if a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, comes into your synagogue, and a poor man in filthy clothing also comes in;2 for if there come unto your synagogue a man with a gold ring in splendid apparel, and a poor man also come in in vile apparel,
3 and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing the fine clothes, and say, "You sit here in a good place," and you say to the poor man, "You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool,"3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:3 Suppose you give special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say to him, "Please have a seat." But you say to the poor man, "Stand over there," or "Sit on the floor at my feet."3 and you pay special attention to him who wears the fine clothing, and say, "Sit here in a good place;" and you tell the poor man, "Stand there," or "Sit by my footstool;"3 and ye look upon him who wears the splendid apparel, and say, Do thou sit here well, and say to the poor, Do thou stand there, or sit here under my footstool:
4 have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil motives?4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?4 Aren't you discriminating against people and using a corrupt standard to make judgments?4 haven't you shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?4 have ye not made a difference among yourselves, and become judges having evil thoughts?
5 Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters! Didn't God choose poor people in the world to become rich in faith and to receive the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?5 Listen, my beloved brothers. Didn't God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him?5 Hear, my beloved brethren: Has not God chosen the poor as to the world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to them that love him?

6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and personally drag you into court?6 But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?6 Yet, you show no respect to poor people. Don't rich people oppress you and drag you into court?6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Don't the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts?6 But ye have despised the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and do not they drag you before the tribunals?
7 Do they not blaspheme the fair name by which you have been called?7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?7 Don't they curse the good name [of Jesus], the name that was used to bless you?7 Don't they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called?7 And do not they blaspheme the excellent name which has been called upon you?
8 If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF," you are doing well.8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:8 You are doing right if you obey this law from the highest authority: "Love your neighbor as you love yourself."8 However, if you fulfill the royal law, according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well.8 If indeed ye keep the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well.
9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.9 If you favor one person over another, you're sinning, and this law convicts you of being disobedient.9 But if you show partiality, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.9 But if ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.
10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.10 If someone obeys all of God's laws except one, that person is guilty of breaking all of them.10 For whoever keeps the whole law, and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.10 For whoever shall keep the whole law and shall offend in one point, he has come under the guilt of breaking all.

11 For He who said, "DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY," also said, "DO NOT COMMIT MURDER." Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.11 After all, the one who said, "Never commit adultery," is the same one who said, "Never murder." If you do not commit adultery but you murder, you become a person who disobeys God's laws.11 For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not commit murder." Now if you do not commit adultery, but murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.11 For he who said, Thou shalt not commit adultery, said also, Thou shalt not kill. Now if thou dost not commit adultery, but killest, thou art become transgressor of the law.
12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty.12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.12 Talk and act as people who are going to be judged by laws that bring freedom.12 So speak, and so do, as men who are to be judged by a law of freedom.12 So speak ye, and so act, as those that are to be judged by the law of liberty;
13 For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.13 No mercy will be shown to those who show no mercy to others. Mercy triumphs over judgment.13 For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.13 for judgment will be without mercy to him that has shewn no mercy. Mercy glories over judgment.
Faith and Works
14 What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him?14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?14 My brothers and sisters, what good does it do if someone claims to have faith but doesn't do any good things? Can this kind of faith save him?14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him?14 What is the profit, my brethren, if any one say he have faith, but have not works? can faith save him?
15 If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food,15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,15 Suppose a believer, whether a man or a woman, needs clothes or food15 And if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food,15 Now if a brother or a sister is naked and destitute of daily food,

16 and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and be filled," and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?16 and one of you tells that person, "God be with you! Stay warm, and make sure you eat enough." If you don't provide for that person's physical needs, what good does it do?16 and one of you tells them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled;" and yet you didn't give them the things the body needs, what good is it?16 and one from amongst you say to them, Go in peace, be warmed and filled; but give not to them the needful things for the body, what is the profit?
17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.17 In the same way, faith by itself is dead if it doesn't cause you to do any good things.17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.17 So also faith, if it have not works, is dead by itself.
18 But someone may well say, "You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works."18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.18 Another person might say, "You have faith, but I do good things." Show me your faith apart from the good things you do. I will show you my faith by the good things I do.18 Yes, a man will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.18 But some one will say, Thou hast faith and I have works. Shew me thy faith without works, and I from my works will shew thee my faith.
19 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.19 You believe that there is one God. That's fine! The demons also believe that, and they tremble with fear.19 You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe, and shudder.19 Thou believest that God is one. Thou doest well. The demons even believe, and tremble.
20 But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?20 You fool! Do you have to be shown that faith which does nothing is useless?20 But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?21 Didn't our ancestor Abraham receive God's approval as a result of what he did when he offered his son Isaac as a sacrifice on the altar?21 Wasn't Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22 You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected;22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?22 You see that Abraham's faith and what he did worked together. His faith was shown to be genuine by what he did.22 You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected;22 Thou seest that faith wrought with his works, and that by works faith was perfected.
23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "AND ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS," and he was called the friend of God.23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.23 The Scripture passage came true. It says, "Abraham believed God, and that faith was regarded by God to be his approval of Abraham." So Abraham was called God's friend.23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness;" and he was called the friend of God.23 And the scripture was fulfilled which says, Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness, and he was called Friend of God.
24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.24 You see that a person receives God's approval because of what he does, not only because of what he believes.24 You see then that by works, a man is justified, and not only by faith.24 Ye see that a man is justified on the principle of works, and not on the principle of faith only.
25 In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?25 The same is true of the prostitute Rahab who welcomed the spies and sent them away on another road. She received God's approval because of what she did.25 In the same way, wasn't Rahab the prostitute also justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way?25 But was not in like manner also Rahab the harlot justified on the principle of works, when she had received the messengers and put them forth by another way?

26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.26 A body that doesn't breathe is dead. In the same way faith that does nothing is dead. 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.26 For as the body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
