| 1 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment. | 1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. | 1 Brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers. You know that we who teach will be judged more severely. | 1 Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment. | 1 Be not many teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive greater judgment. | 2 For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well. | 2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. | 2 All of us make a lot of mistakes. If someone doesn't make any mistakes when he speaks, he would be perfect. He would be able to control everything he does. | 2 For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn't stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. | 2 For we all often offend. They are very big and are driven by strong winds. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! | 5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! | 5 In the same way the tongue is a small part of the body, but it can brag about doing important things. A large forest can be set on fire by a little flame. | 5 So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest! | 5 Thus also the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. | 6 And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell. | 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. | 6 The tongue is that kind of flame. It is a world of evil among the parts of our bodies, and it completely contaminates our bodies. The tongue sets our lives on fire, and is itself set on fire from hell. | 6 And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna. | 6 and the tongue is fire, the world of unrighteousness; the tongue is set in our members, the defiler of the whole body, and which sets fire to the course of nature, and is set on fire of hell. | 7 For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. | 7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: | 7 People have tamed all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and sea creatures. | 7 For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and thing in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind. | 7 For every species both of beasts and of birds, both of creeping things and of sea animals, is tamed and has been tamed by the human species; | 8 But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. | 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. | 8 Yet, no one can tame the tongue. It is an uncontrollable evil filled with deadly poison. | 8 But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. | 8 but the tongue can no one among men tame; it is an unsettled evil, full of death-bringing poison. | 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; | 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. | 9 With our tongues we praise our Lord and Father. Yet, with the same tongues we curse people, who were created in God's likeness. | 9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God. | 9 Therewith bless we the Lord and Father, and therewith curse we men made after the likeness of God. | 10 from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. | 11 Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water? | 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? | 11 Do clean and polluted water flow out of the same spring? | 11 Does a spring send out from the same opening fresh and bitter water? | 11 Does the fountain, out of the same opening, pour forth sweet and bitter? | 12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh. | 12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. | 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree produce olives? Can a grapevine produce figs? In the same way, a pool of salt water can't produce fresh water. | 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, yield olives, or a vine figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh water. | 12 Can, my brethren, a fig produce olives, or a vine figs? Neither can salt water make sweet water. | Wisdom from Above |
| 13 Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. | 13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. | 13 Do any of you have wisdom and insight? Show this by living the right way with the humility that comes from wisdom. | 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom. | 13 Who is wise and understanding among you; let him shew out of a good conversation his works in meekness of wisdom; | 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. | 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. | 14 But if you are bitterly jealous and filled with self-centered ambition, don't brag. Don't say that you are wise when it isn't true. | 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don't boast and don't lie against the truth. | 14 but if ye have bitter emulation and strife in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. | 15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. | 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. | 15 That kind of wisdom doesn't come from above. It belongs to this world.
