1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen | 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, | 1 From Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ. To God's chosen people who are temporary residents [in the world] and are scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. | 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the chosen ones who are living as foreigners in the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, | 1 Peter, apostle of Jesus Christ, to the sojourners of the dispersion of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, | 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure. | 2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. | 2 God the Father knew you long ago and chose you to live holy lives with the Spirit's help so that you are obedient to Jesus Christ and are sprinkled with his blood. May good will and peace fill your lives! | 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, that you may obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with his blood: Grace to you and peace be multiplied. | 2 elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by sanctification of the Spirit, unto the obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied. | 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, | 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, | 3 Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! God has given us a new birth because of his great mercy. We have been born into a new life that has a confidence which is alive because Jesus Christ has come back to life. | 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy became our father again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, | 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who, according to his great mercy, has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from among the dead, | 4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, | 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, | 4 We have been born into a new life which has an inheritance that can't be destroyed or corrupted and can't fade away. That inheritance is kept in heaven for you, | 4 to an incorruptible and undefiled inheritance that doesn't fade away, reserved in Heaven for you, | 4 to an incorruptible and undefiled and unfading inheritance, reserved in the heavens for you, | 5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. | 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. | 5 since you are guarded by God's power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed at the end of time. | 5 who by the power of God are guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. | 5 who are kept guarded by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, | 6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: | 6 You are extremely happy about these things, even though you have to suffer different kinds of trouble for a little while now. | 6 Wherein you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been put to grief in various trials, | 6 Wherein ye exult, for a little while at present, if needed, put to grief by various trials, | 7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; | 7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: | 7 The purpose of these troubles is to test your faith as fire tests how genuine gold is. Your faith is more precious than gold, and by passing the test, it gives praise, glory, and honor to God. This will happen when Jesus Christ appears again. | 7 that the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes even though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ-- | 7 that the proving of your faith, much more precious than of gold which perishes, though it be proved by fire, be found to praise and glory and honour in the revelation of Jesus Christ: | 8 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, | 8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: | 8 Although you have never seen Christ, you love him. You don't see him now, but you believe in him. You are extremely happy with joy and praise that can hardly be expressed in words | 8 whom not having known you love; in whom, though now you don't see him, yet believing, you rejoice greatly with joy unspeakable and full of glory-- | 8 whom, having not seen, ye love; on whom though not now looking, but believing, ye exult with joy unspeakable and filled with the glory, | 9 obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls. | 9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. | 9 as you obtain the salvation that is the goal of your faith. | 9 receiving the result of your faith, the salvation of your souls. | 9 receiving the end of your faith, the salvation of your souls. | 10 As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, | 10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: | 10 The prophets carefully researched and investigated this salvation. Long ago they spoke about God's kindness that would come to you. | 10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets sought and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, | 10 Concerning which salvation prophets, who have prophesied of the grace towards you, sought out and searched out; | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. | 11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. | 11 So they tried to find out what time or situation the Spirit of Christ kept referring to whenever he predicted Christ's sufferings and the glory that would follow. | 11 searching for who or what kind of time the Spirit of Christ, which was in them, pointed to, when he predicted the sufferings of Christ, and the glories that would follow them. | 11 searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ which was in them pointed out, testifying before of the sufferings which belonged to Christ, and the glories after these. | 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven-- things into which angels long to look. | 12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. | 12 God revealed to the prophets that the things they had spoken were not for their own benefit but for yours. What the prophets had spoken, the Holy Spirit, who was sent from heaven, has now made known to you by those who spread the Good News among you. These are things that even the angels want to look into. | 12 To them it was revealed, that not to themselves, but to you, they ministered these things, which now have been announced to you through those who preached the Good News to you by the Holy Spirit sent out from heaven; which things angels desire to look into. | 12 To whom it was revealed, that not to themselves but to you they ministered those things, which have now been announced to you by those who have declared to you the glad tidings by the Holy Spirit, sent from heaven, which angels desire to look into. | 13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. | 13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; | 13 Therefore, your minds must be clear and ready for action. Place your confidence completely in what God's kindness will bring you when Jesus Christ appears again. | 13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action, be sober and set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ-- | 13 Wherefore, having girded up the loins of your mind, be sober and hope with perfect stedfastness in the grace which will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; | 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, | 14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: | 14 Because you are children who obey God, don't live the kind of lives you once lived. Once you lived to satisfy your desires because you didn't know any better. | 14 as children of obedience, not conforming yourselves according to your former lusts as in your ignorance, | 14 as children of obedience, not conformed to your former lusts in your ignorance; | 15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; | 15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; | 15 But because the God who called you is holy you must be holy in every aspect of your life. | 15 but just as he who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior; | 15 but as he who has called you is holy, be ye also holy in all your conversation; | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
16 because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY." | 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. | 16 Scripture says, "Be holy, because I am holy." | 16 because it is written, "You shall be holy; for I am holy." | 16 because it is written, Be ye holy, for I am holy. | 17 If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; | 17 And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: | 17 So if you call God your Father, live your time as temporary residents on earth in fear. He is the God who judges all people by what they have done, and he doesn't play favorites. | 17 If you call on him as Father, who without respect of persons judges according to each man's work, pass the time of your living as foreigners here in reverent fear: | 17 And if ye invoke as Father him who, without regard of persons, judges according to the work of each, pass your time of sojourn in fear, | 18 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, | 18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; | 18 Realize that you weren't set free from the worthless life handed down to you from your ancestors by a payment of silver or gold which can be destroyed. | 18 knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers, | 18 knowing that ye have been redeemed, not by corruptible things, as silver or gold, from your vain conversation handed down from your fathers, | 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. | 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: | 19 Rather, the payment that freed you was the precious blood of Christ, the lamb with no defects or imperfections. | 19 but with precious blood, as of a faultless and pure lamb, the blood of Christ; | 19 but by precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, the blood of Christ, | 20 For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you | 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, | 20 He is the lamb who was known long ago before the world existed, but for your good he became publicly known in the last period of time. | 20 who was foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of times for your sake, | 20 foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but who has been manifested at the end of times for your sakes, | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
21 who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. | 21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. | 21 Through him you believe in God who brought Christ back to life and gave him glory. So your faith and confidence are in God. | 21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead, and gave him glory; so that your faith and hope might be in God. | 21 who by him do believe on God, who has raised him from among the dead and given him glory, that your faith and hope should be in God. | 22 Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, | 22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: | 22 Love each other with a warm love that comes from the heart. After all, you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth. As a result you have a sincere love for each other. | 22 Seeing you have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth through the Spirit in sincere brotherly affection, love one another from the heart fervently: | 22 Having purified your souls by obedience to the truth to unfeigned brotherly love, love one another out of a pure heart fervently; | 23 for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God. | 23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. | 23 You have been born again, not from a seed that can be destroyed, but through God's everlasting word that can't be destroyed. That's why [Scripture says], | 23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the word of God, which lives and remains forever. | 23 being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the living and abiding word of God. | 24 For, "ALL FLESH IS LIKE GRASS, AND ALL ITS GLORY LIKE THE FLOWER OF GRASS. THE GRASS WITHERS, AND THE FLOWER FALLS OFF, | 24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: | 24 "All people are like grass, and all their beauty is like a flower of the field. The grass dries up and the flower drops off, | 24 For, "All flesh is like grass, and all of man's glory like the flower in the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls; | 24 Because all flesh is as grass, and all its glory as the flower of grass. The grass has withered and its flower has fallen; | 25 BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER." And this is the word which was preached to you. | 25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. | 25 but the word of the Lord lasts forever." This word is the Good News that was told to you. | 25 but the Lord's word endures forever." This is the word of Good News which was preached to you. | 25 but the word of the Lord abides for eternity. But this is the word which in the glad tidings is preached to you. |
