1 "These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from stumbling. | 1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. | 1 [Jesus continued,] "I have said these things to you so that you won't lose your faith. | 1 "These things have I spoken to you, so that you wouldn't be caused to stumble. | 1 These things I have spoken unto you that ye may not be offended. | 2 "They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God. | 2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. | 2 You will be thrown out of synagogues. Certainly, the time is coming when people who murder you will think that they are serving God. | 2 They will put you out of the synagogues. Yes, the time comes that whoever kills you will think that he offers service to God. | 2 They shall put you out of the synagogues; but the hour is coming that every one who kills you will think to render service to God; | 3 "These things they will do because they have not known the Father or Me. | 3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. | 3 They will do these things to you because they haven't known the Father or me. | 3 They will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. | 3 and these things they will do because they have not known the Father nor me. | 4 "But these things I have spoken to you, so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. These things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you. | 4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you. | 4 But I've told you this so that when it happens you'll remember what I've told you. I didn't tell you this at first, because I was with you. | 4 But I have told you these things, so that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you about them. I didn't tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you. | 4 But I have spoken these things to you, that when their hour shall have come, ye may remember them, that I have said them unto you. But I did not say these things unto you from the beginning, because I was with you. | The Holy Spirit Promised |
5 "But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, 'Where are You going?' | 5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? | 5 "Now I'm going to the one who sent me. Yet, none of you asks me where I'm going. | 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' | 5 But now I go to him that has sent me, and none of you demands of me, Where goest thou? | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
6 "But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. | 6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. | 6 But because I've told you this, you're filled with sadness. | 6 But because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart. | 6 But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. | 7 "But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. | 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. | 7 However, I am telling you the truth: It's good for you that I'm going away. If I don't go away, the helper won't come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. | 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I don't go away, the Counselor won't come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. | 7 But I say the truth to you, It is profitable for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I go I will send him to you. | 8 "And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; | 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: | 8 He will come to convict the world of sin, to show the world what has God's approval, and to convince the world that God judges it. | 8 When he has come, he will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment; | 8 And having come, he will bring demonstration to the world, of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: | 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; | 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; | 9 He will convict the world of sin, because people don't believe in me. | 9 about sin, because they don't believe in me; | 9 of sin, because they do not believe on me; | 10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; | 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; | 10 He will show the world what has God's approval, because I'm going to the Father and you won't see me anymore. | 10 about righteousness, because I am going to my Father, and you won't see me any more; | 10 of righteousness, because I go away to my Father, and ye behold me no longer; | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. | 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. | 11 He will convince the world that God judges it, because the ruler of this world has been judged. | 11 about judgment, because the prince of this world has been judged. | 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. | 12 "I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. | 12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. | 12 "I have a lot more to tell you, but that would be too much for you now. | 12 "I have yet many things to tell you, but you can't bear them now. | 12 I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now. | 13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. | 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. | 13 When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into the full truth. He won't speak on his own. He will speak what he hears and will tell you about things to come. | 13 However when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he hears, he will speak. He will declare to you things that are coming. | 13 But when he is come, the Spirit of truth, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but whatsoever he shall hear he shall speak; and he will announce to you what is coming. | 14 "He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. | 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. | 14 He will give me glory, because he will tell you what I say. | 14 He will glorify me, for he will take from what is mine, and will declare it to you. | 14 He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine and shall announce it to you. | 15 "All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you. | 15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. | 15 Everything the Father says is also what I say. That is why I said, 'He will take what I say and tell it to you.' | 15 All things whatever the Father has are mine; therefore I said that he takes of mine, and will declare it to you. | 15 All things that the Father has are mine; on account of this I have said that he receives of mine and shall announce it to you. | Jesus Death and Resurrection Foretold |
NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
16 "A little while, and you will no longer see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me." | 16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father. | 16 "In a little while you won't see me anymore. Then in a little while you will see me again." | 16 A little while, and you will not see me. Again a little while, and you will see me." | 16 A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, because I go away to the Father. | 17 Some of His disciples then said to one another, "What is this thing He is telling us, 'A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me'; and, 'because I go to the Father '?" | 17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? | 17 Some of his disciples said to each other, "What does he mean? He tells us that in a little while we won't see him. Then he tells us that in a little while we will see him again and that he's going to the Father." | 17 Some of his disciples therefore said to one another, "What is this that he says to us, 'A little while, and you won't see me, and again a little while, and you will see me;' and, 'Because I go to the Father?'" | 17 Some of his disciples therefore said to one another, What is this he says to us, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away to the Father? | 18 So they were saying, "What is this that He says, 'A little while '? We do not know what He is talking about." | 18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith. | 18 So they were asking each other, "What does he mean when he says, 'In a little while'? We don't understand what he's talking about." | 18 They said therefore, "What is this that he says, 'A little while?' We don't know what he is saying." | 18 They said therefore, What is this which he says of the little while? We do not know of what he speaks. | 19 Jesus knew that they wished to question Him, and He said to them, "Are you deliberating together about this, that I said, 'A little while, and you will not see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me'? | 19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me? | 19 Jesus knew they wanted to ask him something. So he said to them, "Are you trying to figure out among yourselves what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you won't see me, and in a little while you will see me again'? | 19 Therefore Jesus perceived that they wanted to ask him, and he said to them, "Do you inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, 'A little while, and you won't see me, and again a little while, and you will see me?' | 19 Jesus knew therefore that they desired to demand of him, and said to them, Do ye inquire of this among yourselves that I said, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me? | 20 "Truly, truly, I say to you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but your grief will be turned into joy. | 20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. | 20 I can guarantee this truth: You will cry because you are sad, but the world will be happy. You will feel pain, but your pain will turn to happiness. | 20 Most certainly I tell you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. | 20 Verily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, ye, but the world shall rejoice; and ye will be grieved, but your grief shall be turned to joy. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
21 "Whenever a woman is in labor she has pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a child has been born into the world. | 21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. | 21 A woman has pain when her time to give birth comes. But after the child is born, she doesn't remember the pain anymore because she's happy that a child has been brought into the world. | 21 A woman, when she gives birth, has sorrow, because her time has come. But when she has delivered the child, she doesn't remember the anguish any more, for the joy that a human being is born into the world. | 21 A woman, when she gives birth to a child, has grief because her hour has come; but when the child is born, she no longer remembers the trouble, on account of the joy that a man has been born into the world. | 22 "Therefore you too have grief now; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. | 22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. | 22 "Now you're in a painful situation. But I will see you again. Then you will be happy, and no one will take that happiness away from you. | 22 Therefore you now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. | 22 And ye now therefore have grief; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one takes from you. | Prayer Promises |
23 "In that day you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you. | 23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. | 23 When that day comes, you won't ask me any more questions. I can guarantee this truth: If you ask the Father for anything in my name, he will give it to you. | 23 "In that day you will ask me no questions. Most certainly I tell you, whatever you may ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. | 23 And in that day ye shall demand nothing of me: verily, verily, I say to you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give you. | 24 "Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full. | 24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. | 24 So far you haven't asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive so that you can be completely happy. | 24 Until now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be made full. | 24 Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. | 25 "These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but will tell you plainly of the Father. | 25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. | 25 "I have used examples to illustrate these things. The time is coming when I won't use examples to speak to you. Rather, I will speak to you about the Father in plain words. | 25 I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. But the time is coming when I will no more speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father. | 25 These things I have spoken to you in allegories; the hour is coming that I will no longer speak to you in allegories, but will declare to you openly concerning the Father. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
26 "In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; | 26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: | 26 When that day comes, you will ask for what you want in my name. I'm telling you that I won't have to ask the Father for you. | 26 In that day you will ask in my name; and I don't say to you, that I will pray to the Father for you, | 26 In that day ye shall ask in my name; and I say not to you that I will demand of the Father for you, | 27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from the Father. | 27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. | 27 The Father loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. | 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from God. | 27 for the Father himself has affection for you, because ye have had affection for me, and have believed that I came out from God. | 28 "I came forth from the Father and have come into the world; I am leaving the world again and going to the Father." | 28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. | 28 I left the Father and came into the world. Again, [as I've said,] I'm going to leave the world and go back to the Father." | 28 I came out from the Father, and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world, and go to the Father." | 28 I came out from the Father and have come into the world; again, I leave the world and go to the Father. | 29 His disciples said, "Lo, now You are speaking plainly and are not using a figure of speech. | 29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. | 29 His disciples said, "Now you're talking in plain words and not using examples. | 29 His disciples said to him, "Behold, now you speak plainly, and speak no figures of speech. | 29 His disciples say to him, Lo, now thou speakest openly and utterest no allegory. | 30 "Now we know that You know all things, and have no need for anyone to question You; by this we believe that You came from God." | 30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. | 30 Now we know that you know everything. You don't need to wait for questions to be asked. Because of this, we believe that you have come from God." | 30 Now we know that you know all things, and don't need for anyone to question you. By this we believe that you came forth from God." | 30 Now we know that thou knowest all things, and hast not need that any one should demand of thee. By this we believe that thou art come from God. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? | 31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? | 31 Jesus replied to them, "Now you believe. | 31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? | 31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? | 32 "Behold, an hour is coming, and has already come, for you to be scattered, each to his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. | 32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. | 32 The time is coming, and is already here, when all of you will be scattered. Each of you will go your own way and leave me all alone. Yet, I'm not all alone, because the Father is with me. | 32 Behold, the time is coming, yes, and has now come, that you will be scattered, everyone to his own place, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. | 32 Behold, the hour is coming, and has come, that ye shall be scattered, each to his own, and shall leave me alone; and yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. | 33 "These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world." | 33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. | 33 I've told you this so that my peace will be with you. In the world you'll have trouble. But cheer up! I have overcome the world." | 33 I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have oppression; but cheer up! I have overcome the world." | 33 These things have I spoken to you that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye have tribulation; but be of good courage: I have overcome the world. |
