1 While Israel remained at Shittim, the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab. | 1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab. | 1 While Israel was staying at Shittim, the men began to have sex with Moabite women | 1 Israel stayed in Shittim; and the people began to play the prostitute with the daughters of Moab: | 1 And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to commit fornication with the daughters of Moab. | 2 For they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. | 2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. | 2 who invited the people to the sacrifices offered to their gods. The people ate the meat from the sacrifices and worshiped these gods. | 2 for they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods. | 2 And they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods. | 3 So Israel joined themselves to Baal of Peor, and the LORD was angry against Israel. | 3 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel. | 3 Since the Israelites joined in worshiping the god Baal of Peor, the LORD became angry with Israel. | 3 Israel joined himself to Baal Peor: and the anger of Yahweh was kindled against Israel. | 3 And Israel joined himself to Baal-Peor; and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel. | 4 The LORD said to Moses, "Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel." | 4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel. | 4 The LORD said to Moses, "Take all the leaders of the people, and execute them in broad daylight in the LORD's presence. This will turn the LORD's anger away from Israel." | 4 Yahweh said to Moses, "Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up to Yahweh before the sun, that the fierce anger of Yahweh may turn away from Israel." | 4 And Jehovah said to Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up to Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may be turned away from Israel. | 5 So Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Each of you slay his men who have joined themselves to Baal of Peor." | 5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor. | 5 So Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Each of you must kill the men who have joined in worshiping the god Baal of Peor." | 5 Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Everyone kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal Peor." | 5 And Moses said to the judges of Israel, Slay every one his men that have joined themselves to Baal-Peor. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
6 Then behold, one of the sons of Israel came and brought to his relatives a Midianite woman, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, while they were weeping at the doorway of the tent of meeting. | 6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. | 6 One of the Israelite men brought a Midianite woman to his brothers. He did this right in front of Moses and the whole community of Israel while they were crying at the entrance to the tent of meeting. | 6 Behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the Tent of Meeting. | 6 And behold, a man of the children of Israel came and brought a Midianitish woman to his brethren, in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of the whole assembly of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the entrance of the tent of meeting. | 7 When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he arose from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand, | 7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand; | 7 Phinehas, son of Eleazar and grandson of the priest Aaron, saw this. So he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand, | 7 When Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand; | 7 And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, and rose up from among the assembly, and took a javelin in his hand, | 8 and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and pierced both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman, through the body. So the plague on the sons of Israel was checked. | 8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. | 8 and went into the tent after the Israelite man. He drove the spear through the man and into the woman's body. Because of this, the plague that the Israelites were experiencing stopped. | 8 and he went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. | 8 and he went after the man of Israel into the tent-chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. And the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. | 9 Those who died by the plague were 24,000. | 9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand. | 9 However, 24,000 people died from that plague. | 9 Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand. | 9 And those that died in the plague were twenty-four thousand. | The Zeal of Phinehas |

11 "Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned away My wrath from the sons of Israel in that he was jealous with My jealousy among them, so that I did not destroy the sons of Israel in My jealousy. | 11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy. | 11 "Phinehas, son of Eleazar and grandson of the priest Aaron, turned my fury away from the Israelites. Since he stood up for me, I didn't have to stand up for myself and destroy them. | 11 "Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I didn't consume the children of Israel in my jealousy. | 11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy. | 12 "Therefore say, 'Behold, I give him My covenant of peace; | 12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace: | 12 So tell Phinehas that I'm making a promise of peace to him. | 12 Therefore say, 'Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace: | 12 Therefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace! | 13 and it shall be for him and his descendants after him, a covenant of a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the sons of Israel.'" | 13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel. | 13 My promise is that he and his descendants will be priests permanently because he stood up for his God and he made peace with the LORD for the Israelites." | 13 and it shall be to him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.'" | 13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel. | 14 Now the name of the slain man of Israel who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, a leader of a father's household among the Simeonites. | 14 Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites. | 14 The name of the Israelite man who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri, son of Salu. (Salu was the leader of a family from Simeon.) | 14 Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers' house among the Simeonites. | 14 And the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, the prince of a father's house of the Simeonites. | 15 The name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi the daughter of Zur, who was head of the people of a father's household in Midian. | 15 And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian. | 15 The name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi, daughter of Zur. 16 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | 16 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, | 16 The LORD said to Moses, | 16 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, | 16 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying, | 17 "Be hostile to the Midianites and strike them; | 17 Vex the Midianites, and smite them: | 17 "Treat the Midianites as your enemies, and kill them | 17 "Harass the Midianites, and strike them; | 17 Harass the Midianites, and smite them, | 18 for they have been hostile to you with their tricks, with which they have deceived you in the affair of Peor and in the affair of Cozbi, the daughter of the leader of Midian, their sister who was slain on the day of the plague because of Peor." | 18 For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake. | 18 because they treated you as enemies. They plotted to trick you in the incident that took place at Peor. They used their sister Cozbi, daughter of a Midianite leader, who was killed on the day of the plague caused by the incident at Peor." | 18 for they harassed you with their wiles, with which they have deceived you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor." | 18 for they have harassed you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague because of the matter of Peor. |
