Contrast the Upright and the Wicked
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
He who separates himself seeks his own desire, He quarrels against all sound wisdom.1 Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.1 A loner is out to get what he wants for himself. He opposes all sound reasoning.1 An unfriendly man pursues selfishness, and defies all sound judgment.1 He that separateth himself seeketh his pleasure, he is vehement against all sound wisdom.
A fool does not delight in understanding, But only in revealing his own mind.2 A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.2 A fool does not find joy in understanding but only in expressing his own opinion.2 A fool has no delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own opinion.2 A fool hath no delight in understanding, but only that his heart may reveal itself.
When a wicked man comes, contempt also comes, And with dishonor comes scorn.3 When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.3 When wickedness comes, contempt also comes, and insult comes along with disgrace.3 When wickedness comes, contempt also comes, and with shame comes disgrace.3 When the wicked cometh, there cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.
The words of a man's mouth are deep waters; The fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.4 The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.4 The words of a person's mouth are like deep waters. The fountain of wisdom is an overflowing stream.4 The words of a man's mouth are like deep waters. The fountain of wisdom is like a flowing brook.4 The words of a man's mouth are deep waters, and the fountain of wisdom is a gushing brook.
To show partiality to the wicked is not good, Nor to thrust aside the righteous in judgment.5 It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.5 It is not good to be partial toward a wicked person, thereby depriving an innocent person of justice.5 To be partial to the faces of the wicked is not good, nor to deprive the innocent of justice.5 It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to wrong the righteous in judgment.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
A fool's lips bring strife, And his mouth calls for blows.6 A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.6 By talking, a fool gets into an argument, and his mouth invites a beating.6 A fool's lips come into strife, and his mouth invites beatings.6 A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for stripes.
A fool's mouth is his ruin, And his lips are the snare of his soul.7 A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.7 A fool's mouth is his ruin. His lips are a trap to his soul.7 A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are a snare to his soul.7 A fool's mouth is destruction to him, and his lips are a snare to his soul.
The words of a whisperer are like dainty morsels, And they go down into the innermost parts of the body.8 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.8 The words of a gossip are swallowed greedily, and they go down into a person's innermost being.8 The words of a gossip are like dainty morsels: they go down into a person's innermost parts.8 The words of a talebearer are as dainty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
He also who is slack in his work Is brother to him who destroys.9 He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.9 Whoever is lazy in his work is related to a vandal.9 One who is slack in his work is brother to him who is a master of destruction.9 He also who is indolent in his work is brother of the destroyer.
The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it and is safe.10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower. A righteous person runs to it and is safe.10 The name of Yahweh is a strong tower: the righteous run to him, and are safe.10 The name of Jehovah is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
A rich man's wealth is his strong city, And like a high wall in his own imagination.11 The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit.11 A rich person's wealth is his strong city and is like a high wall in his imagination.11 The rich man's wealth is his strong city, like an unscalable wall in his own imagination.11 The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as a high wall in his own imagination.
Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, But humility goes before honor.12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.12 Before destruction a person's heart is arrogant, but humility comes before honor.12 Before destruction the heart of man is proud, but before honor is humility.12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty; and before honour goeth humility.
He who gives an answer before he hears, It is folly and shame to him.13 He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.13 Whoever gives an answer before he listens is stupid and shameful.13 He who gives answer before he hears, that is folly and shame to him.13 He that giveth answer before he heareth, it is folly and shame unto him.
The spirit of a man can endure his sickness, But as for a broken spirit who can bear it?14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?14 A person's spirit can endure sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit?14 A man's spirit will sustain him in sickness, but a crushed spirit, who can bear?14 The spirit of a man sustaineth his infirmity; but a broken spirit who can bear?
The mind of the prudent acquires knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.15 The mind of a person who has understanding acquires knowledge. The ears of wise people seek knowledge.15 The heart of the discerning gets knowledge. The ear of the wise seeks knowledge.15 The heart of an intelligent man getteth knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
A man's gift makes room for him And brings him before great men.16 A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.16 A gift opens doors for the one who gives it and brings him into the presence of great people.16 A man's gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.16 A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.
The first to plead his case seems right, Until another comes and examines him.17 He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.17 The first to state his case seems right [until] his neighbor comes to cross-examine him.17 He who pleads his cause first seems right; until another comes and questions him.17 He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.
The cast lot puts an end to strife And decides between the mighty ones.18 The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty.18 Flipping a coin ends quarrels and settles [issues] between powerful people.18 The lot settles disputes, and keeps strong ones apart.18 The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty.
A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city, And contentions are like the bars of a citadel.19 A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.19 An offended brother is more [resistant]than a strong city, and disputes are like the locked gate of a castle tower.19 A brother offended is more difficult than a fortified city; and disputes are like the bars of a castle.19 A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city; and contentions are as the bars of a palace.
With the fruit of a man's mouth his stomach will be satisfied; He will be satisfied with the product of his lips.20 A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.20 A person's speaking ability provides for his stomach. His talking provides him a living.20 A man's stomach is filled with the fruit of his mouth. With the harvest of his lips he is satisfied.20 A man's belly is satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; with the increase of his lips is he satisfied.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.21 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love to talk will have to eat their own words.21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit.21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
He who finds a wife finds a good thing And obtains favor from the LORD.22 Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.22 Whoever finds a wife finds something good and has obtained favor from the LORD.22 Whoever finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor of Yahweh.22 Whoso hath found a wife hath found a good thing, and hath obtained favour from Jehovah.
The poor man utters supplications, But the rich man answers roughly.23 The poor useth intreaties; but the rich answereth roughly.23 A poor person is timid when begging, but a rich person is blunt when replying.23 The poor plead for mercy, but the rich answer harshly.23 He that is poor speaketh with supplications, but the rich answereth roughly.
A man of too many friends comes to ruin, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.24 A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.24 Friends can destroy one another, but a loving friend can stick closer than family. 24 A man of many companions may be ruined, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.24 A man of many friends will come to ruin but there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
