Duties of the Older and Younger | ||||
NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
1 But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. | 1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: | 1 Tell believers to live the kind of life that goes along with accurate teachings. | 1 But say the things which fit sound doctrine, | 1 But do thou speak the things that become sound teaching; | 2 Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance. | 2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. | 2 Tell older men to be sober. Tell them to be men of good character, to use good judgment, and to be well-grounded in faith, love, and endurance. | 2 that older men should be temperate, sensible, sober minded, sound in faith, in love, and in patience: | 2 that the elder men be sober, grave, discreet, sound in faith, in love, in patience; | 3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, | 3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; | 3 Tell older women to live their lives in a way that shows they are dedicated to God. Tell them not to be gossips or addicted to alcohol, but to be examples of virtue. | 3 and that older women likewise be reverent in behavior, not slanderers nor enslaved to much wine, teachers of that which is good; | 3 that the elder women in like manner be in deportment as becoming those who have to say to sacred things, not slanderers, not enslaved to much wine, teachers of what is right; | 4 so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, | 4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, | 4 In this way they will teach young women to show love to their husbands and children, | 4 that they may train the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, | 4 that they may admonish the young women to be attached to their husbands, to be attached to their children, | 5 to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored. | 5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. | 5 to use good judgment, and to be morally pure. Also, tell them to teach young women to be homemakers, to be kind, and to place themselves under their husbands' authority. Then no one can speak evil of God's word. | 5 to be sober minded, chaste, workers at home, kind, being in subjection to their own husbands, that God's word may not be blasphemed. | 5 discreet, chaste, diligent in home work, good, subject to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be evil spoken of. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
6 Likewise urge the young men to be sensible; | 6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. | 6 Encourage young men to use good judgment. | 6 Likewise, exhort the younger men to be sober minded; | 6 The younger men in like manner exhort to be discreet: | 7 in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified, | 7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, | 7 Always set an example by doing good things. When you teach, be an example of moral purity and dignity. | 7 in all things showing yourself an example of good works; in your teaching showing integrity, seriousness, incorruptibility, | 7 in all things affording thyself as a pattern of good works; in teaching uncorruptedness, gravity, | 8 sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us. | 8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. | 8 Speak an accurate message that cannot be condemned. Then those who oppose us will be ashamed because they cannot say anything bad about us. | 8 and soundness of speech that can't be condemned; that he who opposes you may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say about us. | 8 a sound word, not to be condemned; that he who is opposed may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say about us: | 9 Urge bondslaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, | 9 Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; | 9 Tell slaves who are believers to place themselves under their masters' authority in everything they do. Tell them to please their masters, not to argue with them | 9 Exhort servants to be in subjection to their own masters, and to be well-pleasing in all things; not contradicting; | 9 bondmen to be subject to their own masters, to make themselves acceptable in everything; not gainsaying; | 10 not pilfering, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect. | 10 Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. | 10 or steal from them. Instead, tell slaves to show their masters how good and completely loyal they can be. Then they will show the beauty of the teachings about God our Savior in everything they do. | 10 not stealing, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God, our Savior, in all things. | 10 not robbing their masters, but shewing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the teaching which is of our Saviour God in all things. | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, | 11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, | 11 After all, God's saving kindness has appeared for the benefit of all people. | 11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, | 11 For the grace of God which carries with it salvation for all men has appeared, | 12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, | 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; | 12 It trains us to avoid ungodly lives filled with worldly desires so that we can live self-controlled, moral, and godly lives in this present world. | 12 instructing us to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we would live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world; | 12 teaching us that, having denied impiety and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, and justly, and piously in the present course of things, | 13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, | 13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; | 13 At the same time we can expect what we hope for-the appearance of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. | 13 looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ; | 13 awaiting the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ; | 14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. | 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. | 14 He gave himself for us to set us free from every sin and to cleanse us so that we can be his special people who are enthusiastic about doing good things. | 14 who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good works. | 14 who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all lawlessness, and purify to himself a peculiar people, zealous for good works. | 15 These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you. | 15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. | 15 Tell these things to the believers. Encourage and correct them, using your full authority. Don't let anyone ignore you. | 15 Say these things and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no man despise you. | 15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise thee. |
