1 Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed, | 1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, | 1 Remind believers to willingly place themselves under the authority of government officials. Believers should obey them and be ready to help them with every good thing they do. | 1 Remind them to be in subjection to rulers and to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, | 1 Put them in mind to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient to rule, to be ready to do every good work, | 2 to malign no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing every consideration for all men. | 2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. | 2 Believers shouldn't curse anyone or be quarrelsome, but they should be gentle and show courtesy to everyone. | 2 to speak evil of no one, not to be contentious, to be gentle, showing all humility toward all men. | 2 to speak evil of no one, not to be contentious, to be mild, shewing all meekness towards all men. | 3 For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. | 3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. | 3 Indeed, we, too, were once stupid, disobedient, and misled. We were slaves to many kinds of lusts and pleasures. We were mean and jealous. We were hated, and we hated each other. | 3 For we were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. | 3 For we were once ourselves also without intelligence, disobedient, wandering in error, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. | 4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, | 4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, | 4 However, when God our Savior made his kindness and love for humanity appear, | 4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love toward mankind appeared, | 4 But when the kindness and love to man of our Saviour God appeared, | 5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, | 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; | 5 he saved us, but not because of anything we had done to gain his approval. Instead, because of his mercy he saved us through the washing in which the Holy Spirit gives us new birth and renewal. | 5 not by works of righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, | 5 not on the principle of works which have been done in righteousness which we had done, but according to his own mercy he saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, | 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; | 6 God poured a generous amount of the Spirit on us through Jesus Christ our Savior. | 6 whom he poured out on us richly, through Jesus Christ our Savior; | 6 which he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; | 7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. | 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. | 7 As a result, God in his kindness has given us his approval and we have become heirs who have the confidence that we have everlasting life. | 7 that, being justified by his grace, we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. | 7 that, having been justified by his grace, we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. | 8 This is a trustworthy statement; and concerning these things I want you to speak confidently, so that those who have believed God will be careful to engage in good deeds. These things are good and profitable for men. | 8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. | 8 This is a statement that can be trusted. I want you to insist on these things so that those who believe in God can concentrate on setting an example by doing good things. This is good and helps other people. | 8 This saying is faithful, and concerning these things I desire that you affirm confidently, so that those who have believed God may be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men; | 8 The word is faithful, and I desire that thou insist strenuously on these things, that they who have believed God may take care to pay diligent attention to good works. These things are good and profitable to men. | 9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. | 9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. | 9 Avoid foolish controversies, arguments about genealogies, quarrels, and fights about Moses' Teachings. This is useless and worthless. | 9 but shun foolish questionings, genealogies, strife, and disputes about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. | 9 But foolish questions, and genealogies, and strifes, and contentions about the law, shun; for they are unprofitable and vain. | 10 Reject a factious man after a first and second warning, | 10 A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; | 10 Have nothing to do with people who continue to teach false doctrine after you have warned them once or twice. | 10 Avoid a factious man after a first and second warning; | 10 An heretical man after a first and second admonition have done with, | NASB | KJV | GWT | WEB | DBY |
11 knowing that such a man is perverted and is sinning, being self-condemned. | 11 Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself. | 11 You know that people like this are corrupt. They are sinners condemned by their own actions. | 11 knowing that such a one is perverted, and sins, being self-condemned. | 11 knowing that such a one is perverted, and sins, being self-condemned. | Personal Concerns |
