Judah and Tamar
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
And it came about at that time, that Judah departed from his brothers and visited a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.1 About that time Judah left his brothers and went to stay with a man from Adullam whose name was Hirah.1 It happened at that time, that Judah went down from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a man of Adullam whose name was Hirah.
Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua; and he took her and went in to her.2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.2 There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man whose name was Shua. He married her and slept with her.2 Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua. He took her, and went in to her.2 And Judah saw there the daughter of a Canaanitish man whose name was Shua; and he took her, and went in to her.
So she conceived and bore a son and he named him Er.3 And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.3 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son named Er. 3 She conceived, and bore a son; and he named him Er.3 And she conceived and bore a son; and he called his name Er.
Then she conceived again and bore a son and named him Onan.4 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.4 She became pregnant again and gave birth to another son, whom she named Onan.4 She conceived again, and bore a son; and she named him Onan.4 And she again conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Onan.
She bore still another son and named him Shelah; and it was at Chezib that she bore him.5 And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.5 Then she became pregnant again and gave birth to another son, whom she named Shelah. He was born at Kezib.5 She yet again bore a son, and named him Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bore him.5 And again she bore a son, and she called his name Shelah; and he was at Chezib when she bore him.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
Now Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.6 Judah chose a wife for his firstborn son Er. Her name was Tamar.6 Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.
But Er, Judah's firstborn, was evil in the sight of the LORD, so the LORD took his life.7 And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.7 Er angered the LORD. So the LORD took away his life.7 Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of Yahweh. Yahweh killed him.7 And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of Jehovah, and Jehovah slew him.
Then Judah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife, and perform your duty as a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother."8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.8 Then Judah said to Onan, "Go sleep with your brother's widow. Do your duty for her as a brother-in-law, and produce a descendant for your brother."8 Judah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her, and raise up seed to your brother."8 Then Judah said to Onan, Go in to thy brother's wife, and fulfil to her the brother-in-law's duty, and raise up seed to thy brother.
Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so when he went in to his brother's wife, he wasted his seed on the ground in order not to give offspring to his brother.9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.9 But Onan knew that the descendant wouldn't belong to him, so whenever he slept with his brother's widow, he wasted his semen on the ground to avoid giving his brother a descendant.9 Onan knew that the seed wouldn't be his; and it happened, when he went in to his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother.9 But when Onan knew that the seed should not be his own, it came to pass when he went in to his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, in order to give no seed to his brother.
But what he did was displeasing in the sight of the LORD; so He took his life also.10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.10 What Onan did angered the LORD so much that the LORD took away Onan's life too.10 The thing which he did was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and he killed him also.10 And the thing which he did was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and he slew him also.

Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Remain a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up"; for he thought, "I am afraid that he too may die like his brothers." So Tamar went and lived in her father's house.11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Return to your father's home. Live as a widow until my son Shelah grows up." He thought that this son, too, might die like his brothers. So Tamar went to live in her father's home.11 Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, "Remain a widow in your father's house, until Shelah, my son, is grown up;" for he said, "Lest he also die, like his brothers." Tamar went and lived in her father's house.11 And Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, Remain a widow in thy father's house, until Shelah my son is grown; for he said, Lest he die also, as his brethren. And Tamar went and remained in her father's house.
Now after a considerable time Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died; and when the time of mourning was ended, Judah went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.12 And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.12 After a long time Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had finished mourning, he and his friend Hirah from Adullam went to Timnah where the men were shearing Judah's sheep.12 After many days, Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died. Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheepshearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah, the Adullamite.12 And as the days were multiplied, Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. And Judah was comforted, and he went up to his sheep-shearers, to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
It was told to Tamar, "Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep."13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.13 As soon as Tamar was told that her father-in-law was on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,13 It was told Tamar, saying, "Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep."13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.
So she removed her widow's garments and covered herself with a veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gateway of Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah had grown up, and she had not been given to him as a wife.14 And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.14 she took off her widow's clothes, covered her face with a veil, and disguised herself. Then she sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. (She did this because she realized that Shelah was grown up now, and she hadn't been given to him in marriage.)14 She took off of her the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she wasn't given to him as a wife.14 And she put the garments of her widowhood off from her, and covered herself with a veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the entry of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as wife.
When Judah saw her, he thought she was a harlot, for she had covered her face.15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute because she had covered her face.15 When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.15 And Judah saw her, and took her for a harlot; because she had covered her face.

So he turned aside to her by the road, and said, "Here now, let me come in to you"; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, "What will you give me, that you may come in to me?"16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?16 Since he didn't know she was his daughter-in-law, he approached her by the roadside and said, "Come on, let's sleep together!" She asked, "What will you pay to sleep with me?"16 He turned to her by the way, and said, "Please come, let me come in to you," for he didn't know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, "What will you give me, that you may come in to me?"16 And he turned aside to her by the way, and said, Come, I pray thee, let me go in to thee; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in to me?
He said, therefore, "I will send you a young goat from the flock." She said, moreover, "Will you give a pledge until you send it?"17 And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?17 "I'll send you a young goat from the flock," he answered. She said, "First give me something as a deposit until you send it."17 He said, "I will send you a young goat from the flock." She said, "Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?"17 And he said, I will send thee a kid of the goats from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, until thou send it?
He said, "What pledge shall I give you?" And she said, "Your seal and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand." So he gave them to her and went in to her, and she conceived by him.18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.18 "What should I give you as a deposit?" he asked. "Your signet ring, its cord, and the shepherd's staff that's in your hand," she answered. So he gave them to her. Then he slept with her, and she became pregnant.18 He said, "What pledge will I give you?" She said, "Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand." He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him.18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy lace, and thy staff which is in thy hand. And he gave it her, and went in to her; and she conceived by him.
Then she arose and departed, and removed her veil and put on her widow's garments.19 And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.19 After she got up and left, she took off her veil and put her widow's clothes back on.19 She arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.19 And she arose and went away; and she laid by her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
When Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman's hand, he did not find her.20 And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.20 Judah sent his friend Hirah to deliver the young goat so that he could get back his deposit from the woman, but his friend couldn't find her.20 Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend, the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman's hand, but he didn't find her.20 And Judah sent the kid of the goats by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman's hand; but he found her not.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
He asked the men of her place, saying, "Where is the temple prostitute who was by the road at Enaim?" But they said, "There has been no temple prostitute here."21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.21 He asked the men of that area, "Where's that prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?" "There's no prostitute here," they answered.21 Then he asked the men of her place, saying, "Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the road?" They said, "There has been no prostitute here."21 And he asked the men of her place, saying, Where is the prostitute that was at Enaim, by the way-side? And they said, There was no prostitute here.
So he returned to Judah, and said, "I did not find her; and furthermore, the men of the place said, 'There has been no temple prostitute here.'"22 And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.22 So he went back to Judah and said, "I couldn't find her. Even the men of that area said, 'There's no prostitute here.'"22 He returned to Judah, and said, "I haven't found her; and also the men of the place said, 'There has been no prostitute here.'"22 And he returned to Judah, and said, I have not found her; and also the men of the place said, No prostitute has been here.
Then Judah said, "Let her keep them, otherwise we will become a laughingstock. After all, I sent this young goat, but you did not find her."23 And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.23 Then Judah said, "Let her keep what I gave her, or we'll become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you couldn't find her."23 Judah said, "Let her keep it, lest we be shamed. Behold, I sent this young goat, and you haven't found her."23 Then Judah said, Let her take it for herself, lest we be put to shame. Behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.
Now it was about three months later that Judah was informed, "Your daughter-in-law Tamar has played the harlot, and behold, she is also with child by harlotry." Then Judah said, "Bring her out and let her be burned!"24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.24 About three months later Judah was told, "Your daughter-in-law Tamar has been acting like a prostitute. What's more, because of it she's pregnant." Judah ordered, "Bring her out to be burned."24 It happened about three months later, that it was told Judah, saying, "Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has played the prostitute; and moreover, behold, she is with child by prostitution." Judah said, "Bring her forth, and let her be burnt."24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter-in-law has committed fornication, and behold, she is also with child by fornication. And Judah said, Bring her forth, that she may be burned.
It was while she was being brought out that she sent to her father-in-law, saying, "I am with child by the man to whom these things belong." And she said, "Please examine and see, whose signet ring and cords and staff are these?"25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.25 As she was brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law, "I'm pregnant by the man who owns these things. See if you recognize whose signet ring, cord, and shepherd's staff these are."25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, "By the man, whose these are, I am with child." She also said, "Please discern whose are these--the signet, and the cords, and the staff."25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, By the man to whom these belong am I with child; and she said, Acknowledge, I pray thee, whose are this signet, and this lace, and this staff.

Judah recognized them, and said, "She is more righteous than I, inasmuch as I did not give her to my son Shelah." And he did not have relations with her again.26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.26 Judah recognized them and said, "She's not guilty. I am! She did this because I haven't given her my son Shelah." Judah never made love to her again.26 Judah acknowledged them, and said, "She is more righteous than I, because I didn't give her to Shelah, my son." He knew her again no more.26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She is more righteous than I, because I have not given her to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
It came about at the time she was giving birth, that behold, there were twins in her womb.27 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.27 The time came for Tamar to give birth, and she had twin boys.27 It happened in the time of her travail, that behold, twins were in her womb.27 And it came to pass at the time of her delivery, that behold, twins were in her womb.
Moreover, it took place while she was giving birth, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, "This one came out first."28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.28 When she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand. The midwife took a piece of red yarn, tied it on his wrist, and said, "This one came out first."28 When she travailed, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, "This came out first."28 And it came to pass when she brought forth, that one stretched out his hand, and the midwife took it and bound round his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.
But it came about as he drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out. Then she said, "What a breach you have made for yourself!" So he was named Perez.29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.29 As he pulled back his hand, his brother was born. So she said, "Is this how you burst into the world!" He was named Perez [Bursting Into].29 It happened, as he drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out, and she said, "Why have you made a breach for yourself?" Therefore his name was called Perez.29 And it came to pass as he drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out; and she said, How hast thou broken forth! on thee be the breach! And they called his name Pherez.
Afterward his brother came out who had the scarlet thread on his hand; and he was named Zerah.30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.30 After that his brother was born with the red yarn on his hand. He was named Zerah [Sunrise].30 Afterward his brother came out, that had the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerah.30 And afterwards came out his brother, round whose hand was the scarlet thread; and they called his name Zerah.
