The Return to Egypt
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
1 Now the famine was severe in the land.1 And the famine was sore in the land.1 The famine was severe in the land.1 The famine was severe in the land.1 And the famine was grievous in the land.
2 So it came about when they had finished eating the grain which they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, "Go back, buy us a little food."2 And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food.2 When they finished eating the grain they had brought from Egypt, Israel said to his sons, "Go back and buy us a little more food."2 It happened, when they had eaten up the grain which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said to them, "Go again, buy us a little more food."2 And it came to pass, when they had finished eating the grain which they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, Go again, buy us a little food.
3 Judah spoke to him, however, saying, "The man solemnly warned us, 'You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.'3 And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.3 Judah said to him, "The man gave us a severe warning: 'You won't be allowed to see me again unless your brother is with you.'3 Judah spoke to him, saying, "The man solemnly warned us, saying, 'You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.'3 And Judah spoke to him, saying, The man did positively testify to us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, unless your brother be with you.
4 "If you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.4 If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food:4 If you let our brother go with us, we'll go and buy food for you.4 If you'll send our brother with us, we'll go down and buy you food,4 If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food;
5 "But if you do not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, 'You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.'"5 But if thou wilt not send him, we will not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.5 If you won't let him go, we won't go. The man said to us, 'You won't be allowed to see me again unless your brother is with you.'"5 but if you'll not send him, we'll not go down, for the man said to us, 'You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.'"5 but if thou do not send him, we will not go down, for the man said to us, Ye shall not see my face, unless your brother be with you.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
6 Then Israel said, "Why did you treat me so badly by telling the man whether you still had another brother?"6 And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?6 Israel asked, "Why have you made trouble for me by telling the man you had another brother?"6 Israel said, "Why did you treat me so badly, telling the man that you had another brother?"6 And Israel said, Why did ye deal so ill with me as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?
7 But they said, "The man questioned particularly about us and our relatives, saying, 'Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?' So we answered his questions. Could we possibly know that he would say, 'Bring your brother down '?"7 And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?7 They answered, "The man kept asking about us and our family: 'Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?' We simply answered his questions. How could we possibly know he would say, 'Bring your brother here'?"7 They said, "The man asked directly concerning ourselves, and concerning our relatives, saying, 'Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?' We just answered his questions. Is there any way we could know that he would say, 'Bring your brother down?'"7 And they said, The man asked very closely after us, and after our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye a brother? And we told him according to the tenor of these words. Could we at all know that he would say, Bring your brother down?
8 Judah said to his father Israel, "Send the lad with me and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, we as well as you and our little ones.8 And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.8 Then Judah said to his father Israel, "Send the boy along with me. Let's get going so that we won't starve to death.8 Judah said to Israel, his father, "Send the boy with me, and we'll get up and go, so that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones.8 And Judah said to Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live, and not die, both we and thou and our little ones.
9 "I myself will be surety for him; you may hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame before you forever.9 I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever:9 I guarantee that he will come back. You can hold me responsible for him. If I don't bring him back to you and place him here in front of you, you can blame me the rest of my life.9 I'll be collateral for him. From my hand will you require him. If I don't bring him to you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever,9 I will be surety for him: of my hand shalt thou require him; if I bring him not to thee, and set him before thy face, then shall I be guilty toward thee for ever.
10 "For if we had not delayed, surely by now we could have returned twice."10 For except we had lingered, surely now we had returned this second time.10 If we hadn't waited so long, we could have made this trip twice by now."10 for if we hadn't delayed, surely we would have returned a second time by now."10 For had we not lingered, we should now certainly have returned already twice.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
11 Then their father Israel said to them, "If it must be so, then do this: take some of the best products of the land in your bags, and carry down to the man as a present, a little balm and a little honey, aromatic gum and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds.11 And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:11 Then their father Israel said to them, "If that's the way it has to be, then take the man a gift. Put some of the best products of the land in your bags. Take a little balm, a little honey, gum, myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds.11 Their father, Israel, said to them, "If it must be so, then do this. Take from the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry down a present for the man, a little balm, a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts, and almonds;11 And their father Israel said to them, If it is then so, do this: take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a gift: a little balsam and a little honey, tragacanth and ladanum, pistacia-nuts and almonds.
12 "Take double the money in your hand, and take back in your hand the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks; perhaps it was a mistake.12 And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight:12 Take twice as much money with you. You must return the money that was put back in your sacks. Maybe it was a mistake.12 and take double money in your hand, and take back the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight.12 And take other money in your hand, and the money that was returned to you in the mouth of your sacks, carry back in your hand: perhaps it is an oversight.
13 "Take your brother also, and arise, return to the man;13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man:13 Take your brother, and go back to the man.13 Take your brother also, get up, and return to the man.13 And take your brother, and arise, go again to the man.
14 and may God Almighty grant you compassion in the sight of the man, so that he will release to you your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved."14 And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.14 May God Almighty make him merciful to you so that he will send your other brother and Benjamin [home] with you. If I lose my children, I lose my children."14 May God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release to you your other brother and Benjamin. If I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved."14 And the Almighty God give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother and Benjamin! And I, if I be bereaved of children, am bereaved.
15 So the men took this present, and they took double the money in their hand, and Benjamin; then they arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.15 And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.15 The men took the gifts, twice as much money, and Benjamin. They went to Egypt, where they presented themselves to Joseph.15 The men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and got up, went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.15 And the men took that gift, and took double money in their hand, and Benjamin, and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and came before Joseph.
Joseph Sees Benjamin
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to his house steward, "Bring the men into the house, and slay an animal and make ready; for the men are to dine with me at noon."16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and slay, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon.16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the man in charge of his house, "Take these men to my house. Butcher an animal, and prepare a meal, because they are going to eat with me at noon."16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, "Bring the men into the house, and butcher an animal, and prepare; for the men will dine with me at noon."16 And Joseph saw Benjamin with them, and said to the man who was over his house, Bring the men into the house, and slaughter cattle, and make ready; for the men shall eat with me at noon.
17 So the man did as Joseph said, and brought the men to Joseph's house.17 And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph's house.17 So the man did as Joseph said and took them to Joseph's house.17 The man did as Joseph commanded, and the man brought the men to Joseph's house.17 And the man did as Joseph had said; and the man brought the men into Joseph's house.
18 Now the men were afraid, because they were brought to Joseph's house; and they said, "It is because of the money that was returned in our sacks the first time that we are being brought in, that he may seek occasion against us and fall upon us, and take us for slaves with our donkeys."18 And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph's house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses.18 The men were frightened, because they had been brought to Joseph's house. They thought, "We've been brought here because of the money that was put back into our sacks the first time. They're going to attack us, overpower us, take our donkeys, and make us slaves."18 The men were afraid, because they were brought to Joseph's house; and they said, "Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time, we're brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, attack us, and seize us as slaves, along with our donkeys."18 And the men were afraid because they were brought into Joseph's house, and said, Because of the money that was returned to us in our sacks at the beginning are we brought in, that he may turn against us, and fall upon us and take us for bondmen, and our asses.
19 So they came near to Joseph's house steward, and spoke to him at the entrance of the house,19 And they came near to the steward of Joseph's house, and they communed with him at the door of the house,19 So they came to the man in charge of Joseph's house and spoke to him at the door.19 They came near to the steward of Joseph's house, and they spoke to him at the door of the house,19 And they came up to the man that was over Joseph's house, and they spoke to him at the door of the house,
20 and said, "Oh, my lord, we indeed came down the first time to buy food,20 And said, O sir, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food:20 "Please, sir," they said, "we came here to buy food once before.20 and said, "Oh, my lord, we indeed came down the first time to buy food.20 and said, Ah! my lord, we came indeed down at the first to buy food.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
21 and it came about when we came to the lodging place, that we opened our sacks, and behold, each man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full. So we have brought it back in our hand.21 And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand.21 When we stopped for the night, we opened our sacks, and each man found all of his money inside. So we brought it back with us.21 When we came to the lodging place, we opened our sacks, and behold, each man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. We have brought it back in our hand.21 And it came to pass when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money according to its weight; and we have brought it again in our hand.
22 "We have also brought down other money in our hand to buy food; we do not know who put our money in our sacks."22 And other money have we brought down in our hands to buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks.22 We also brought more money to buy food. We have no idea who put our money back in our sacks."22 We have brought down other money in our hand to buy food. We don't know who put our money in our sacks."22 And other money have we brought down in our hand to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks.
23 He said, "Be at ease, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks; I had your money." Then he brought Simeon out to them.23 And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them.23 "It's alright," he said. "Don't be afraid! Your God, the God of your father, must have given you treasure in your sacks. I received your money." Then he brought Simeon out to them.23 He said, "Peace be to you. Don't be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks. I received your money." He brought Simeon out to them.23 And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks; your money came to me. And he brought Simeon out to them.
24 Then the man brought the men into Joseph's house and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their donkeys fodder.24 And the man brought the men into Joseph's house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender.24 The man took the brothers into Joseph's house. He gave them water to wash their feet and feed for their donkeys.24 The man brought the men into Joseph's house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet. He gave their donkeys fodder.24 And the man brought the men into Joseph's house, and gave water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses food.
25 So they prepared the present for Joseph's coming at noon; for they had heard that they were to eat a meal there.25 And they made ready the present against Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there.25 They got their gifts ready for Joseph's return at noon, because they had heard they were going to eat there.25 They prepared the present for Joseph's coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there.25 And they made ready the gift for Joseph's coming at noon; for they had heard that they should eat bread there.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
26 When Joseph came home, they brought into the house to him the present which was in their hand and bowed to the ground before him.26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.26 When Joseph came home, they gave him the gifts they had brought to the house. Then they bowed to him with their faces touching the ground.26 When Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves down to him to the earth.26 When Joseph came home, they brought him the gift that was in their hand, into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.
27 Then he asked them about their welfare, and said, "Is your old father well, of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?"27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive?27 He asked them how they were. Then he said, "You told me about your elderly father. How is he? Is he still alive?"27 He asked them of their welfare, and said, "Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he yet alive?"27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well the old man of whom ye spoke? Is he yet alive?
28 They said, "Your servant our father is well; he is still alive." They bowed down in homage.28 And they answered, Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance.28 They answered, "Yes, sir. Our father is alive and well." Then they knelt, bowing down.28 They said, "Your servant, our father, is well. He is still alive." They bowed the head, and did homage.28 And they said, Thy servant our father is well; he is yet alive. And they bowed, and made obeisance.
29 As he lifted his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, he said, "Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?" And he said, "May God be gracious to you, my son."29 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son.29 As Joseph looked around, he saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son. "Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?" he asked. "God be gracious to you, my son," he said.29 He lifted up his eyes, and saw Benjamin, his brother, his mother's son, and said, "Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?" He said, "God be gracious to you, my son."29 And he lifted up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, Is this your younger brother of whom ye spoke to me? And he said, God be gracious to thee, my son!
30 Joseph hurried out for he was deeply stirred over his brother, and he sought a place to weep; and he entered his chamber and wept there.30 And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there.30 Deeply moved at the sight of his brother, he hurried away, looking for a place to cry. He went into his private room and cried there.30 Joseph hurried, for his heart yearned over his brother; and he sought a place to weep. He entered into his room, and wept there.30 And Joseph made haste, for his bowels burned for his brother; and he sought a place to weep, and he went into the chamber, and wept there.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
31 Then he washed his face and came out; and he controlled himself and said, "Serve the meal."31 And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread.31 Then he washed his face and came out. He was in control of his emotions when he said, "Serve the food."31 He washed his face, and came out. He controlled himself, and said, "Serve the meal."31 And he washed his face, and came out, and controlled himself, and said, Set on bread.
32 So they served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is loathsome to the Egyptians.32 And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.32 He was served separately from his brothers. The Egyptians who were there with him were also served separately, because they found it offensive to eat with Hebrews.32 They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians, that ate with him, by themselves, because the Egyptians don't eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.32 And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves; because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.
33 Now they were seated before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth, and the men looked at one another in astonishment.33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marveled one at another.33 The brothers were seated facing him according to their ages-from the oldest to the youngest. They looked at each other in amazement.33 They sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth, and the men marveled one with another.33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth; and the men marvelled one at another.
34 He took portions to them from his own table, but Benjamin's portion was five times as much as any of theirs. So they feasted and drank freely with him.34 And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin's mess was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.34 Joseph had portions of food brought to them from his table, but Benjamin's portion was five times more than any of the others. So they ate and drank with Joseph until they were drunk.34 He sent portions to them from before him, but Benjamin's portion was five times as much as any of theirs. They drank, and were merry with him.34 And he had portions carried to them from before him. And Benjamin's portion was five times greater than the portions of them all. And they drank, and made merry with him.
