Jesus, the Example

1 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,1 Since we are surrounded by so many examples [of faith], we must get rid of everything that slows us down, especially sin that distracts us. We must run the race that lies ahead of us and never give up.1 Therefore let us also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,1 Let us also therefore, having so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, laying aside every weight, and sin which so easily entangles us, run with endurance the race that lies before us,
2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.2 We must focus on Jesus, the source and goal of our faith. He saw the joy ahead of him, so he endured death on the cross and ignored the disgrace it brought him. Then he received the highest position in heaven, the one next to the throne of God.2 looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.2 looking stedfastly on Jesus the leader and completer of faith: who, in view of the joy lying before him, endured the cross, having despised the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.3 Think about Jesus, who endured opposition from sinners, so that you don't become tired and give up.3 For consider him who has endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, that you don't grow weary, fainting in your souls.3 For consider well him who endured so great contradiction from sinners against himself, that ye be not weary, fainting in your minds.
A Father’s Discipline
4 You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin;4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.4 You struggle against sin, but your struggles haven't killed you.4 You have not yet resisted to blood, striving against sin;4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, wrestling against sin.
5 and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, "MY SON, DO NOT REGARD LIGHTLY THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD, NOR FAINT WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED BY HIM;5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:5 You have forgotten the encouraging words that God speaks to you as his children: "My child, pay attention when the Lord disciplines you. Don't give up when he corrects you.5 and you have forgotten the exhortation which reasons with you as with children, "My son, don't take lightly the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when you are reproved by him;5 And ye have quite forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when reproved by him;

6 FOR THOSE WHOM THE LORD LOVES HE DISCIPLINES, AND HE SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES."6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.6 The Lord disciplines everyone he loves. He severely disciplines everyone he accepts as his child."6 For whom the Lord loves, he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives."6 for whom the Lord loves he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives.
7 It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?7 Endure your discipline. God corrects you as a father corrects his children. All children are disciplined by their fathers.7 It is for discipline that you endure. God deals with you as with children, for what son is there whom his father doesn't discipline?7 Ye endure for chastening, God conducts himself towards you as towards sons; for who is the son that the father chastens not?
8 But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.8 If you aren't disciplined like the other children, you aren't part of the family.8 But if you are without discipline, of which all have been made partakers, then are you illegitimate, and not children.8 But if ye are without chastening, of which all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
9 Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live?9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?9 On earth we have fathers who disciplined us, and we respect them. Shouldn't we place ourselves under the authority of God, the father of spirits, so that we will live?9 Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live?9 Moreover we have had the fathers of our flesh as chasteners, and we reverenced them; shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live?
10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.10 For a short time our fathers disciplined us as they thought best. Yet, God disciplines us for our own good so that we can become holy like him.10 For they indeed, for a few days, punished us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness.10 For they indeed chastened for a few days, as seemed good to them; but he for profit, in order to the partaking of his holiness.

11 All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.11 We don't enjoy being disciplined. It always seems to cause more pain than joy. But later on, those who learn from that discipline have peace that comes from doing what is right.11 All chastening seems for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been exercised thereby.11 But no chastening at the time seems to be matter of joy, but of grief; but afterwards yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those exercised by it.
12 Therefore, strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble,12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;12 Strengthen your tired arms and weak knees.12 Therefore, lift up the hands that hang down and the feeble knees,12 Wherefore lift up the hands that hang down, and the failing knees;
13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that the limb which is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed.13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.13 Keep walking along straight paths so that your injured leg won't get worse. Instead, let it heal.13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that which is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.13 and make straight paths for your feet, that that which is lame be not turned aside; but that rather it may be healed.
14 Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:14 Try to live peacefully with everyone, and try to live holy lives, because if you don't, you will not see the Lord.14 Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man will see the Lord,14 Pursue peace with all, and holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord:
15 See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled;15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;15 Make sure that everyone has kindness from God so that bitterness doesn't take root and grow up to cause trouble that corrupts many of you. 15 looking carefully lest there be any man who falls short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and many be defiled by it;15 watching lest there be any one who lacks the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and many be defiled by it;

16 that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal.16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.16 Make sure that no one commits sexual sin or is as concerned about earthly things as Esau was. He sold his rights as the firstborn son for a single meal.16 lest there be any sexually immoral person, or profane person, like Esau, who sold his birthright for one meal.16 lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one meal sold his birthright;
17 For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.17 You know that afterwards, when he wanted to receive the blessing that the firstborn son was to receive, he was rejected. Even though he begged and cried for the blessing, he couldn't do anything to change what had happened.17 For you know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for a change of mind though he sought it diligently with tears.17 for ye know that also afterwards, desiring to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, (for he found no place for repentance) although he sought it earnestly with tears.
Contrast of Sinai and Zion
18 For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind,18 For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,18 You have not come to something that you can feel, to a blazing fire, to darkness, to gloom, to a storm,18 For you have not come to a mountain that might be touched, and that burned with fire, and to blackness, darkness, storm,18 For ye have not come to the mount that might be touched and was all on fire, and to obscurity, and darkness, and tempest,
19 and to the blast of a trumpet and the sound of words which sound was such that those who heard begged that no further word be spoken to them.19 And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:19 to a trumpet's blast, and to a voice. When your ancestors heard that voice, they begged not to hear it say another word.19 the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which those who heard it begged that not one more word should be spoken to them,19 and trumpet's sound, and voice of words; which they that heard, excusing themselves, declined the word being addressed to them any more:
20 For they could not bear the command, "IF EVEN A BEAST TOUCHES THE MOUNTAIN, IT WILL BE STONED."20 (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:20 They couldn't obey the command that was given, "If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned to death."20 for they could not stand that which was commanded, "If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned;"20 (for they were not able to bear what was enjoined: And if a beast should touch the mountain, it shall be stoned;

21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, "I AM FULL OF FEAR and trembling."21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)21 The sight was so terrifying that even Moses said he was trembling and afraid.21 and so fearful was the appearance, that Moses said, "I am terrified and trembling."21 and, so fearful was the sight, Moses said, I am exceedingly afraid and full of trembling;)
22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels,22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,22 Instead, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, to the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to tens of thousands of angels joyfully gathered together22 But you have come to Mount Zion, and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable multitudes of angels,22 but ye have come to mount Zion; and to the city of the living God, heavenly Jerusalem; and to myriads of angels,
23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,23 and to the assembly of God's firstborn children (whose names are written in heaven). You have come to a judge (the God of all people) and to the spirits of people who have God's approval and have gained eternal life.23 to the general assembly and assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect,23 the universal gathering; and to the assembly of the firstborn who are registered in heaven; and to God, judge of all; and to the spirits of just men made perfect;
24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel.24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things that that of Abel.24 You have come to Jesus, who brings the new promise from God, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better message than Abel's. 24 to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better than that of Abel.24 and to Jesus, mediator of a new covenant; and to the blood of sprinkling, speaking better than Abel.
The Unshaken Kingdom
25 See to it that you do not refuse Him who is speaking. For if those did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape who turn away from Him who warns from heaven.25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:25 Be careful that you do not refuse to listen when God speaks. Your ancestors didn't escape when they refused to listen to God, who warned them on earth. We certainly won't escape if we turn away from God, who warns us from heaven.25 See that you don't refuse him who speaks. For if they didn't escape when they refused him who warned on the Earth, how much more will we not escape who turn away from him who warns from heaven,25 See that ye refuse not him that speaks. For if those did not escape who had refused him who uttered the oracles on earth, much more we who turn away from him who does so from heaven:

26 And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, "YET ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO THE HEAVEN."26 Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.26 When God spoke to your ancestors, his voice shook the earth. But now he has promised, "Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the sky."26 whose voice shook the earth then, but now he has promised, saying, "Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heavens."26 whose voice then shook the earth; but now he has promised, saying, Yet once will I shake not only the earth, but also the heaven.
27 This expression, "Yet once more," denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.27 The words [once more] show clearly that God will change what he has made. These are the things that can be shaken. Then only the things that cannot be shaken will remain.27 This phrase, "Yet once more," signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain.27 But this Yet once, signifies the removing of what is shaken, as being made, that what is not shaken may remain.
28 Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:28 Therefore, we must be thankful that we have a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Because we are thankful, we must serve God with fear and awe in a way that pleases him.28 Therefore, receiving a Kingdom that can't be shaken, let us have grace, through which we serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe,28 Wherefore let us, receiving a kingdom not to be shaken, have grace, by which let us serve God acceptably with reverence and fear.
29 for our God is a consuming fire.29 For our God is a consuming fire.29 After all, our God is a destructive fire.29 for our God is a consuming fire.29 For also our God is a consuming fire.
