Job Says His Friends’ Proverbs Are Ashes
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
1 "Behold, my eye has seen all this, My ear has heard and understood it.1 Lo, mine eye hath seen all this, mine ear hath heard and understood it.1 "My eye has certainly seen all of this! My ear has heard and understood it.1 "Behold, my eye has seen all this. My ear has heard and understood it.1 Lo, mine eye hath seen all this, mine ear hath heard and understood it.
2 "What you know I also know; I am not inferior to you.2 What ye know, the same do I know also: I am not inferior unto you.2 After all, I know it as well as you do. I am not inferior to you.2 What you know, I know also. I am not inferior to you.2 What ye know, I know also: I am not inferior to you.
3 "But I would speak to the Almighty, And I desire to argue with God.3 Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.3 However, I want to speak to the Almighty, and I wish to argue my case in front of God.3 "Surely I would speak to the Almighty. I desire to reason with God.3 But I will speak to the Almighty, and will find pleasure in reasoning with God;
4 "But you smear with lies; You are all worthless physicians.4 But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value.4 But you are smearing me with lies. All of you are worthless physicians.4 But you are forgers of lies. You are all physicians of no value.4 For ye indeed are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value.
5 "O that you would be completely silent, And that it would become your wisdom!5 O that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.5 I wish you would keep silent. For you, that would be wisdom.5 Oh that you would be completely silent! Then you would be wise.5 Oh that ye would be altogether silent! and it would be your wisdom.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
6 "Please hear my argument And listen to the contentions of my lips.6 Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips.6 Please listen to my argument, and pay attention to my plea.6 Hear now my reasoning. Listen to the pleadings of my lips.6 Hear now my defence, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips.
7 "Will you speak what is unjust for God, And speak what is deceitful for Him?7 Will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully for him?7 "Will you talk wickedly for God and talk deceitfully on his behalf?7 Will you speak unrighteously for God, and talk deceitfully for him?7 Will ye speak unrighteously for God? and for him speak deceit?
8 "Will you show partiality for Him? Will you contend for God?8 Will ye accept his person? will ye contend for God?8 Will you favor him [as] if you were arguing in court on God's behalf?8 Will you show partiality to him? Will you contend for God?8 Will ye accept his person? will ye contend for God?
9 "Will it be well when He examines you? Or will you deceive Him as one deceives a man?9 Is it good that he should search you out? or as one man mocketh another, do ye so mock him?9 Will it go well when he cross-examines you? Will you try to trick him as one mortal tricks another?9 Is it good that he should search you out? Or as one deceives a man, will you deceive him?9 Will it be well if he should search you out? or as one mocketh at a man, will ye mock at him?
10 "He will surely reprove you If you secretly show partiality.10 He will surely reprove you, if ye do secretly accept persons.10 Will he really defend you if you secretly favor [him]?10 He will surely reprove you if you secretly show partiality.10 He will certainly reprove you, if ye do secretly accept persons.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
11 "Will not His majesty terrify you, And the dread of Him fall on you?11 Shall not his excellency make you afraid? and his dread fall upon you?11 Doesn't his majesty terrify you? Doesn't the fear of him fall upon you?11 Shall not his majesty make you afraid, And his dread fall on you?11 Shall not his excellency terrify you? and his dread fall upon you?
12 "Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes, Your defenses are defenses of clay.12 Your remembrances are like unto ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.12 "Your recollections are worthless proverbs. Your answers are absolutely useless. 12 Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes, Your defenses are defenses of clay.12 Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes, your bulwarks are bulwarks of mire.
Job Is Sure He Will Be Vindicated
13 "Be silent before me so that I may speak; Then let come on me what may.13 Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will.13 Be quiet, because I want to speak. Let whatever may happen to me [happen]!13 "Be silent, leave me alone, that I may speak. Let come on me what will.13 Hold your peace from me, and I will speak, and let come on me what will!
14 "Why should I take my flesh in my teeth And put my life in my hands?14 Wherefore do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in mine hand?14 I am biting off more than I can chew and taking my life in my own hands.14 Why should I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand?14 Wherefore should I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand?
15 "Though He slay me, I will hope in Him. Nevertheless I will argue my ways before Him.15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.15 If God would kill me, I would have no hope [left]. Nevertheless, I will defend my behavior to his face. 15 Behold, he will kill me. I have no hope. Nevertheless, I will maintain my ways before him.15 Behold, if he slay me, yet would I trust in him; but I will defend mine own ways before him.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
16 "This also will be my salvation, For a godless man may not come before His presence.16 He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him.16 This also will be my salvation because no godless person could face him.16 This also shall be my salvation, that a godless man shall not come before him.16 This also shall be my salvation, that a profane man shall not come before his face.
17 "Listen carefully to my speech, And let my declaration fill your ears.17 Hear diligently my speech, and my declaration with your ears.17 "Listen carefully to my words. Hear my declaration.17 Hear diligently my speech. Let my declaration be in your ears.17 Hear attentively my speech and my declaration with your ears.
18 "Behold now, I have prepared my case; I know that I will be vindicated.18 Behold now, I have ordered my cause; I know that I shall be justified.18 I have prepared my case. I know that I will be declared righteous.18 See now, I have set my cause in order. I know that I am righteous.18 Behold now, I have ordered the cause; I know that I shall be justified.
19 "Who will contend with me? For then I would be silent and die.19 Who is he that will plead with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, I shall give up the ghost.19 Who can make a case against me? If someone could, I'd be silent and die.19 Who is he who will contend with me? For then would I hold my peace and give up the spirit.19 Who is he that contendeth with me? For if I were silent now, I should expire.
20 "Only two things do not do to me, Then I will not hide from Your face:20 Only do not two things unto me: then will I not hide myself from thee.20 "Please don't do two things to me so that I won't have to hide from you:20 "Only don't do two things to me; then I will not hide myself from your face:20 Only do not two things unto me; then will I not hide myself from thee.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
21 Remove Your hand from me, And let not the dread of You terrify me.21 Withdraw thine hand far from me: and let not thy dread make me afraid.21 Stop oppressing me. Don't let your terror frighten me.21 withdraw your hand far from me; and don't let your terror make me afraid.21 Withdraw thy hand far from me; and let not thy terror make me afraid:
22 "Then call, and I will answer; Or let me speak, then reply to me.22 Then call thou, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer thou me.22 Then call, and I'll answer. Otherwise, I'll speak, and you'll answer me.22 Then call, and I will answer; or let me speak, and you answer me.22 Then call, and I will answer; or I will speak, and answer thou me.
23 "How many are my iniquities and sins? Make known to me my rebellion and my sin.23 How many are mine iniquities and sins? make me to know my transgression and my sin.23 How many crimes and sins have I committed? Make me aware of my disobedience and my sin.23 How many are my iniquities and sins? Make me know my disobedience and my sin.23 How many are mine iniquities and sins? Make me to know my transgression and my sin.
24 "Why do You hide Your face And consider me Your enemy?24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and holdest me for thine enemy?24 Why do you hide your face [from me] and consider me your enemy?24 Why hide you your face, and hold me for your enemy?24 Wherefore dost thou hide thy face, and countest me for thine enemy?
25 "Will You cause a driven leaf to tremble? Or will You pursue the dry chaff?25 Wilt thou break a leaf driven to and fro? and wilt thou pursue the dry stubble?25 Are you trying to make a fluttering leaf tremble or trying to chase dry husks?25 Will you harass a driven leaf? Will you pursue the dry stubble?25 Wilt thou terrify a driven leaf? and wilt thou pursue dry stubble?
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
26 "For You write bitter things against me And make me to inherit the iniquities of my youth.26 For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to possess the iniquities of my youth.26 You write down bitter accusations against me. You make me suffer for the sins of my youth.26 For you write bitter things against me, and make me inherit the iniquities of my youth:26 For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to possess the iniquities of my youth;
27 "You put my feet in the stocks And watch all my paths; You set a limit for the soles of my feet,27 Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks, and lookest narrowly unto all my paths; thou settest a print upon the heels of my feet.27 You put my feet in shackles. You follow my trail by engraving marks on the soles of my feet.27 You also put my feet in the stocks, and mark all my paths. You set a bound to the soles of my feet,27 And thou puttest my feet in the stocks, and markest all my paths; thou settest a bound about the soles of my feet; --
28 While I am decaying like a rotten thing, Like a garment that is moth-eaten.28 And he, as a rotten thing, consumeth, as a garment that is moth eaten.28 I am like worn-out wineskins, like moth-eaten clothes.28 though I am decaying like a rotten thing, like a garment that is moth-eaten.28 One who, as a rotten thing consumeth, as a garment that the moth eateth.
