 "Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge And fill himself with the east wind?2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?2 "Should a wise person answer with endless details and fill his stomach with the east wind?2 "Should a wise man answer with vain knowledge, and fill himself with the east wind?2 Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind,
 "Should he argue with useless talk, Or with words which are not profitable?3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?3 Should he argue with words that don't help, with speeches that don't help [anyone]?3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk, or with speeches with which he can do no good?3 Reasoning with unprofitable talk, and with speeches which do no good?
 "Indeed, you do away with reverence And hinder meditation before God.4 Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.4 Yes, you destroy the fear [of God] and diminish devotion to God.4 Yes, you do away with fear, and hinder devotion before God.4 Yea, thou makest piety of none effect, and restrainest meditation before God.
 "For your guilt teaches your mouth, And you choose the language of the crafty.5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.5 Your sin teaches you what to say. You choose [to talk with] a sly tongue.5 For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the language of the crafty.5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
 "Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; And your own lips testify against you.6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.6 Your [own] mouth condemns you, not I. Your lips testify against you.6 Your own mouth condemns you, and not I. Yes, your own lips testify against you.6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; and thy lips testify against thee.
 "Were you the first man to be born, Or were you brought forth before the hills?7 Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?7 "Were you the first human to be born? Were you delivered before the hills [existed]?7 "Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought forth before the hills?7 Art thou the first man that was born? and wast thou brought forth before the hills?
 "Do you hear the secret counsel of God, And limit wisdom to yourself?8 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?8 Did you listen in on God's council meeting and receive a monopoly on wisdom?8 Have you heard the secret counsel of God? Do you limit wisdom to yourself?8 Hast thou listened in the secret council of +God? And hast thou absorbed wisdom for thyself?
 "What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that we do not?9 What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?9 What do you know that we don't know? What do you understand that we don't?9 What do you know, that we don't know? What do you understand, which is not in us?9 What knowest thou that we know not? what understandest thou which is not in us?
 "Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us, Older than your father.10 With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.10 Both the old and the gray-haired are among us. They are older than your father.10 With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, much elder than your father.10 Both the greyheaded and the aged are with us, older than thy father.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
 "Are the consolations of God too small for you, Even the word spoken gently with you?11 Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?11 Isn't God's comfort enough for you, even when gently spoken to you?11 Are the consolations of God too small for you, even the word that is gentle toward you?11 Are the consolations of God too small for thee? and the word gently spoken to thee?
 "Why does your heart carry you away? And why do your eyes flash,12 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,12 Why have your emotions carried you away? Why do your eyes flash12 Why does your heart carry you away? Why do your eyes flash,12 Why doth thy heart carry thee away? and why do thine eyes wink?
 That you should turn your spirit against God And allow such words to go out of your mouth?13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?13 when you turn against God and spit these words out of your mouth?13 That you turn your spirit against God, and let such words go out of your mouth?13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest words go out of thy mouth?
 "What is man, that he should be pure, Or he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?14 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?14 Why should a mortal be considered faultless or someone born of a woman be considered righteous?14 What is man, that he should be clean? What is he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?14 What is man, that he should be pure? and he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
 "Behold, He puts no trust in His holy ones, And the heavens are not pure in His sight;15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.15 If God doesn't trust his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight,15 Behold, he puts no trust in his holy ones. Yes, the heavens are not clean in his sight;15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight:
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
 How much less one who is detestable and corrupt, Man, who drinks iniquity like water!16 How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?16 how much less will he trust the one who is disgusting and corrupt, the one who drinks wickedness like water.16 how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks iniquity like water!16 How much less the abominable and corrupt, man, that drinketh unrighteousness like water!
What Eliphaz Has Seen of Life
 "I will tell you, listen to me; And what I have seen I will also declare;17 I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;17 "I'll tell you; listen to me! I'll relate what I have seen.17 "I will show you, listen to me; that which I have seen I will declare:17 I will shew thee, listen to me; and what I have seen I will declare;
 What wise men have told, And have not concealed from their fathers,18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:18 I'll tell you what wise people have declared and what was not kept secret from their ancestors.18 (Which wise men have told by their fathers, and have not hidden it;18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hidden;
 To whom alone the land was given, And no alien passed among them.19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.19 (The land was given to them alone, and no stranger passed through their land.)19 to whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them):19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
 "The wicked man writhes in pain all his days, And numbered are the years stored up for the ruthless.20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.20 "The wicked person is tortured all his days. Only a few years are reserved for the ruthless person.20 the wicked man writhes in pain all his days, even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.20 All his days the wicked man is tormented, and numbered years are allotted to the violent.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
 "Sounds of terror are in his ears; While at peace the destroyer comes upon him.21 A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.21 Terrifying sounds are in his ears. While he enjoys peace, the destroyer comes to him.21 A sound of terrors is in his ears. In prosperity the destroyer shall come on him.21 The sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer cometh upon him.
 "He does not believe that he will return from darkness, And he is destined for the sword.22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.22 He doesn't believe he'll return from the dark. He is destined [to be killed] with a sword.22 He doesn't believe that he shall return out of darkness. He is waited for by the sword.22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is singled out for the sword.
 "He wanders about for food, saying, 'Where is it?' He knows that a day of darkness is at hand.23 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.23 He wanders around for food and asks, 'Where is it?' He knows that his ruin is close at hand. 23 He wanders abroad for bread, saying, 'Where is it?' He knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.23 He wandereth abroad for bread, where may it be? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
 "Distress and anguish terrify him, They overpower him like a king ready for the attack,24 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.24 "The day of darkness troubles him. Distress and anguish terrify him like a king ready for battle.24 Distress and anguish make him afraid. They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.24 Distress and anguish make him afraid; they prevail against him, as a king ready for the battle.
 Because he has stretched out his hand against God And conducts himself arrogantly against the Almighty.25 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.25 He stretches out his hand against God and attacks the Almighty like a warrior.25 Because he has stretched out his hand against God, and behaves himself proudly against the Almighty;25 For he hath stretched out his hand against God, and strengthened himself against the Almighty:
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
 "He rushes headlong at Him With his massive shield.26 He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:26 He stubbornly charges at him with a thick shield.26 he runs at him with a stiff neck, with the thick shields of his bucklers;26 He runneth against him, with outstretched neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers;
 "For he has covered his face with his fat And made his thighs heavy with flesh.27 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.27 "His face is bloated with fat, and he is fat around the waist.27 because he has covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat on his thighs.27 For he hath covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat upon his flanks.
 "He has lived in desolate cities, In houses no one would inhabit, Which are destined to become ruins.28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.28 He lives in ruined cities where no one dwells, in houses that are doomed to be piles of rubble.28 He has lived in desolate cities, in houses which no one inhabited, which were ready to become heaps.28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, in houses that no man inhabiteth, which are destined to become heaps.
 "He will not become rich, nor will his wealth endure; And his grain will not bend down to the ground.29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.29 He won't get rich, and his wealth won't last. His possessions won't spread out over the land.29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall their possessions be extended on the earth.29 He shall not become rich, neither shall his substance continue, and their possessions shall not extend upon the earth.
 "He will not escape from darkness; The flame will wither his shoots, And by the breath of His mouth he will go away.30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.30 "He won't escape the darkness. A flame will shrivel his branches. He will be blown away by his own breath.30 He shall not depart out of darkness. The flame shall dry up his branches. By the breath of God's mouth shall he go away.30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches; and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
 "Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself; For emptiness will be his reward.31 Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.31 He shouldn't trust in worthless things and deceive himself because he will get worthless things in return.31 Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself; for emptiness shall be his reward.31 Let him not trust in vanity: he is deceived, for vanity shall be his recompense;
 "It will be accomplished before his time, And his palm branch will not be green.32 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.32 It will happen before his time has come, and his branch will not become green.32 It shall be accomplished before his time. His branch shall not be green.32 It shall be complete before his day, and his branch shall not be green.
 "He will drop off his unripe grape like the vine, And will cast off his flower like the olive tree.33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.33 He will drop his unripened grapes like a vine and throw off his blossoms like an olive tree33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive tree.33 He shall shake off his unripe grapes as a vine, and shall cast his flower as an olive.
 "For the company of the godless is barren, And fire consumes the tents of the corrupt.34 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.34 because a mob of godless people produces nothing, and fire burns up the tents of those who offer bribes.34 For the company of the godless shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.34 For the family of the ungodly shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.
 "They conceive mischief and bring forth iniquity, And their mind prepares deception."35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.35 They conceive trouble and give birth to evil. Their heart prepares deceit."35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
