| 1 Then Job answered, | 1 Then Job answered and said, | 1 Then Job replied [to his friends], | 1 Then Job answered, | 1 And Job answered and said, | 2 "I have heard many such things; Sorry comforters are you all. | 2 I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all. | 2 "I have heard many things like this before. You are all pathetic at comforting me. | 2 "I have heard many such things. You are all miserable comforters! | 2 I have heard many such things: grievous comforters are ye all. | 3 "Is there no limit to windy words? Or what plagues you that you answer? | 3 Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldeneth thee that thou answerest? | 3 Will [your] long-winded speeches never end? What disturbs you that you keep on answering [me]? | 3 Shall vain words have an end? Or what provokes you that you answer? | 3 Shall words of wind have an end? or what provoketh thee that thou answerest? | 4 "I too could speak like you, If I were in your place. I could compose words against you And shake my head at you. | 4 I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you. | 4 I, too, could speak like you if we could trade places. I could string words together against you and shake my head at you. | 4 I also could speak as you do. If your soul were in my soul's place, I could join words together against you, and shake my head at you, | 4 I also could speak as ye: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could join together words against you, and shake my head at you; | 5 "I could strengthen you with my mouth, And the solace of my lips could lessen your pain. | 5 But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should asswage your grief. | 5 I could encourage you with my mouth, and my quivering lips could ease [your pain]. | 5 but I would strengthen you with my mouth. | 6 "If I speak, my pain is not lessened, And if I hold back, what has left me? | 6 Though I speak, my grief is not asswaged: and though I forbear, what am I eased? | 6 If I speak, my pain is not eased. It testifies to my face. | 8 Thou hast shrivelled me up! it is become a witness; and my leanness riseth up against me, it beareth witness to my face. | 9 "His anger has torn me and hunted me down, He has gnashed at me with His teeth; My adversary glares at me. | 9 He teareth me in his wrath, who hateth me: he gnasheth upon me with his teeth; mine enemy sharpeneth his eyes upon me. | 9 "God's anger tore me [apart] and attacked me. He gritted his teeth at me. My opponent looked sharply at me. | 9 He has torn me in his wrath, and persecuted me. He has gnashed on me with his teeth. My adversary sharpens his eyes on me. | 9 His anger teareth and pursueth me; he gnasheth with his teeth against me; as mine adversary he sharpeneth his eyes at me. | 10 "They have gaped at me with their mouth, They have slapped me on the cheek with contempt; They have massed themselves against me. | 10 They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me. | 10 People gaped at me with wide-open mouths.
