Job’s Present State Is Humiliating
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
1 "But now those younger than I mock me, Whose fathers I disdained to put with the dogs of my flock.1 But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.1 "But now those who are younger than I am laugh at me. I didn't think their fathers were fit to sit with the dogs of my flock.1 "But now those who are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to put with my sheep dogs.1 But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to set with the dogs of my flock.
2 "Indeed, what good was the strength of their hands to me? Vigor had perished from them.2 Yea, whereto might the strength of their hands profit me, in whom old age was perished?2 Of what use to me was the strength of their hands? Their strength is gone.2 Of what use is the strength of their hands to me, men in whom ripe age has perished?2 Yea, whereto should the strength of their hands profit me, men in whom vigour hath perished?
3 "From want and famine they are gaunt Who gnaw the dry ground by night in waste and desolation,3 For want and famine they were solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste.3 Shriveled up from need and hunger, they gnaw at the dry and barren ground during the night. 3 They are gaunt from lack and famine. They gnaw the dry ground, in the gloom of waste and desolation.3 Withered up through want and hunger, they flee into waste places long since desolate and desert:
4 Who pluck mallow by the bushes, And whose food is the root of the broom shrub.4 Who cut up mallows by the bushes, and juniper roots for their meat.4 They pick saltwort from the underbrush, and the roots of the broom plant are their food.4 They pluck salt herbs by the bushes. The roots of the broom are their food.4 They gather the salt-wort among the bushes, and the roots of the broom for their food.
5 "They are driven from the community; They shout against them as against a thief,5 They were driven forth from among men, (they cried after them as after a thief;)5 They are driven from the community. People shout at them in the same way they shout at thieves.5 They are driven out from the midst of men. They cry after them as after a thief;5 They are driven forth from among men they cry after them as after a thief --
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
6 So that they dwell in dreadful valleys, In holes of the earth and of the rocks.6 To dwell in the cliffs of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks.6 They have to live in dry riverbeds, in holes in the ground, and among rocks.6 So that they dwell in frightful valleys, and in holes of the earth and of the rocks.6 To dwell in gloomy gorges, in caves of the earth and the rocks:
7 "Among the bushes they cry out; Under the nettles they are gathered together.7 Among the bushes they brayed; under the nettles they were gathered together.7 They howl in bushes and huddle together under thornbushes.7 Among the bushes they bray; and under the nettles they are gathered together.7 They bray among the bushes; under the brambles they are gathered together:
8 "Fools, even those without a name, They were scourged from the land.8 They were children of fools, yea, children of base men: they were viler than the earth.8 Godless fools and worthless people are forced out of the land with whips.8 They are children of fools, yes, children of base men. They were flogged out of the land.8 Sons of fools, and sons of nameless sires, they are driven out of the land.
9 "And now I have become their taunt, I have even become a byword to them.9 And now am I their song, yea, I am their byword.9 "And now they make fun of me with songs. I have become a joke to them.9 "Now I have become their song. Yes, I am a byword to them.9 And now I am their song, yea, I am their byword.
10 "They abhor me and stand aloof from me, And they do not refrain from spitting at my face.10 They abhor me, they flee far from me, and spare not to spit in my face.10 Since they consider me disgusting, they keep their distance from me and don't hesitate to spit in my face.10 They abhor me, they stand aloof from me, and don't hesitate to spit in my face.10 They abhor me, they stand aloof from me, yea, they spare not to spit in my face.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
11 "Because He has loosed His bowstring and afflicted me, They have cast off the bridle before me.11 Because he hath loosed my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me.11 Because God has untied my cord and has made me suffer, they are no longer restrained in my presence.11 For he has untied his cord, and afflicted me; and they have thrown off restraint before me.11 For he hath loosed my cord and afflicted me; so they cast off the bridle before me.
12 "On the right hand their brood arises; They thrust aside my feet and build up against me their ways of destruction.12 Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.12 They have attacked me on my right side like a mob. They trip my feet and then prepare ways to destroy me. 12 On my right hand rise the rabble. They thrust aside my feet, They cast up against me their ways of destruction.12 At my right hand rise the young brood; they push away my feet, and raise up against me their pernicious ways;
13 "They break up my path, They profit from my destruction; No one restrains them.13 They mar my path, they set forward my calamity, they have no helper.13 Yes, they remove all traces of my path in order to destroy me. No one is there to help me against them.13 They mar my path, They set forward my calamity, without anyone's help.13 They mar my path, they set forward my calamity, without any to help them;
14 "As through a wide breach they come, Amid the tempest they roll on.14 They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.14 They come through a wide hole [in the wall]. They crawl through the ruins.14 As through a wide breach they come, in the midst of the ruin they roll themselves in.14 They come in as through a wide breach: amid the confusion they roll themselves onward.
15 "Terrors are turned against me; They pursue my honor as the wind, And my prosperity has passed away like a cloud.15 Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passeth away as a cloud.15 Terrors are directed toward me. They blow away my dignity like the wind. My prosperity vanishes like a cloud.15 Terrors have turned on me. They chase my honor as the wind. My welfare has passed away as a cloud.15 Terrors are turned against me; they pursue mine honour as the wind; and my welfare is passed away like a cloud.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
16 "And now my soul is poured out within me; Days of affliction have seized me.16 And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.16 "Now my life is pouring out of me. Days of suffering seize me.16 "Now my soul is poured out within me. Days of affliction have taken hold on me.16 And now my soul is poured out in me; days of affliction have taken hold upon me.
17 "At night it pierces my bones within me, And my gnawing pains take no rest.17 My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.17 At night God pierces my bones. My body doesn't rest. 17 In the night season my bones are pierced in me, and the pains that gnaw me take no rest.17 The night pierceth through my bones and detacheth them from me, and my gnawing pains take no rest:
18 "By a great force my garment is distorted; It binds me about as the collar of my coat.18 By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.18 With great strength he grabs my clothes. He seizes me by the collar of my robe.18 By great force is my garment disfigured. It binds me about as the collar of my coat.18 By their great force they have become my raiment; they bind me about as the collar of my coat.
19 "He has cast me into the mire, And I have become like dust and ashes.19 He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.19 He throws me into the dirt so that I become like dust and ashes.19 He has cast me into the mire. I have become like dust and ashes.19 He hath cast me into the mire, and I have become like dust and ashes.
20 "I cry out to You for help, but You do not answer me; I stand up, and You turn Your attention against me.20 I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me: I stand up, and thou regardest me not.20 "I call to you for help, but you don't answer me. I stand up, but you just look at me.20 I cry to you, and you do not answer me. I stand up, and you gaze at me.20 I cry unto thee, and thou answerest me not; I stand up, and thou lookest at me.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
21 "You have become cruel to me; With the might of Your hand You persecute me.21 Thou art become cruel to me: with thy strong hand thou opposest thyself against me.21 You have begun to treat me cruelly. With your mighty hand you assault me.21 You have turned to be cruel to me. With the might of your hand you persecute me.21 Thou art changed to a cruel one to me; with the strength of thy hand thou pursuest me.
22 "You lift me up to the wind and cause me to ride; And You dissolve me in a storm.22 Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to ride upon it, and dissolvest my substance.22 You pick me up and let the wind carry me away. You toss me around with a storm.22 You lift me up to the wind, and drive me with it. You dissolve me in the storm.22 Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to be borne away, and dissolvest my substance.
23 "For I know that You will bring me to death And to the house of meeting for all living.23 For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.23 I know you will lead me to death, to the dwelling place appointed for all living beings.23 For I know that you will bring me to death, To the house appointed for all living.23 For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and into the house of assemblage for all living.
24 "Yet does not one in a heap of ruins stretch out his hand, Or in his disaster therefore cry out for help?24 Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction.24 "But God doesn't stretch out his hand against one who is ruined when that person calls for help in his disaster.24 "However doesn't one stretch out a hand in his fall? Or in his calamity therefore cry for help?24 Indeed, no prayer availeth when he stretcheth out his hand: though they cry when he destroyeth.
25 "Have I not wept for the one whose life is hard? Was not my soul grieved for the needy?25 Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul grieved for the poor?25 Didn't I cry for the person whose days were difficult? Didn't my soul grieve for the poor?25 Didn't I weep for him who was in trouble? Wasn't my soul grieved for the needy?25 Did not I weep for him whose days were hard? was not my soul grieved for the needy?
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
26 "When I expected good, then evil came; When I waited for light, then darkness came.26 When I looked for good, then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light, there came darkness.26 When I waited for good, evil came. When I looked for light, darkness came.26 When I looked for good, then evil came; When I waited for light, there came darkness.26 For I expected good, and there came evil; and I waited for light, but there came darkness.
27 "I am seething within and cannot relax; Days of affliction confront me.27 My bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction prevented me.27 My insides are churning and won't calm down. Days of misery are ahead of me.27 My heart is troubled, and doesn't rest. Days of affliction have come on me.27 My bowels well up, and rest not; days of affliction have confronted me.
28 "I go about mourning without comfort; I stand up in the assembly and cry out for help.28 I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried in the congregation.28 I walk in the dark without the sun. I stand up in public and call for help.28 I go mourning without the sun. I stand up in the assembly, and cry for help.28 I go about blackened, but not by the sun; I stand up, I cry in the congregation.
29 "I have become a brother to jackals And a companion of ostriches.29 I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls.29 I'm a brother to jackals and a companion of ostriches.29 I am a brother to jackals, and a companion to ostriches.29 I am become a brother to jackals, and a companion of ostriches.
30 "My skin turns black on me, And my bones burn with fever.30 My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.30 My skin turns dark and peels. My body burns with fever.30 My skin grows black and peels from me. My bones are burned with heat.30 My skin is become black and falleth off me, and my bones are parched with heat.
NASBKJVGWTWEBDBY
31 "Therefore my harp is turned to mourning, And my flute to the sound of those who weep.31 My harp also is turned to mourning, and my organ into the voice of them that weep.31 So my lyre is used for mourning and my flute for loud weeping.31 Therefore my harp has turned to mourning, and my pipe into the voice of those who weep.31 My harp also is turned to mourning, and my pipe into the voice of weepers.
